HIGAONONS

β€œThe indigenous tribes of the Higaonon share a common root language, history and culture, they can be found in the northern and central regions of the island of Mindanao in the Philippines.
They are a nomadic tribe, traveling from one mountain to another, looking for fertile soil for a fruitful harvest.

The name Higaonon is derived from the words higa meaning living, the word goan, which means mountains and the word onon meaning people. All together these words form the description of the tribe as "people of the living mountains." This tribe, also named "people of the wilderness", is one of the least known ethnic groups that inhabit the hinterlands of North-Central Mindanao. They are scattered over five provinces, Bukidnon, Agusan del Sur, Agusan del Norte, Lanao del Norte and Misamis Oriental. Ever since "the Times of Creation " the Higaonon have lived and continues to live in their ancestral forest homes, undisturbed, managing the forest in a natural way.

Their way of life is focused on managing the forests they live in and to create a co-existence with its other inhabitants in a harmonious way. The Higaonon tribe consists of eight clans that are centered around the eight main rivers of their "Ancestral Domain". The tribe is divided into peaceful and warrior clans, nowadays all groups exist in peace with each other. They are true peace loving people and also known as weavers of peace.” (excerpt from an internet post by Ronald de Jong, The Last Tribes of Mindanao, the Higaonon, People of the Living Mountains, Things Asian. Posted on March 25, 2010.)

Thus, the people of Sitio Limunsudan, Barangay Rogongon in Iligan City belongs. In a sort, they are distant relatives of other Higaonon Tribes found in Bukidnon believed to have migrated to this part of Mindanao hundreds of years ago, and made Sitio Limunsudan as their home and sacred grounds. - pdnoel | ctnaguado

The picture below shows a Higaonon female playing KOBING, a musical instrument indigenous to Mindanao.

Our Story

Keepsakes Iligan Souvenirs & Crafts is a social enterprise that creates handmade souvenir items of Iligan with ethnic-inspired designs. We express our support to local livelihood associations, home-based crafters and skilled workers by partnering with them for our raw materials and other products. Most of our partners are survivors of Tropical Storm Washi that badly hit Iligan in December 2011.

Many of our products’ accents are inspired by the Higaonon and Maranao designs. This is to help promote the culturally-diverse city of Iligan where Christians, Higaonons and Maranaos live in harmony.

Abaca is the One-Town-One-Product of Iligan City. We strive to make abaca, in its different forms (woven, rope, raw, etc), as one of our base materials for our products. The second base material we use is bamboo, engineered and raw.

At Keepsakes Iligan, we go the extra mile by providing customers with what they need, the best we could.
