As the 2024 KASAMA General Elections are still ongoing until August 30, the Mindanao State University - Iligan Institute of Technology Debate Varsity (MIDV) hosted the college-level Miting de Avance at the Integrated Developmental School Multi-Purpose Hall (IDS-MPH) on August 27, 2024.
The event saw participation from all seven colleges: the College of Arts and Social Sciences (CASS), College of Engineering (COE), College of Health Sciences (CHS), College of Computer Studies (CCS), College of Education (CED), College of Science and Mathematics (CSM), and College of Economics, Business, and Accountancy (CEBA). Each candidate, from the governor position to board members, had the opportunity to present their platforms, visions, and plans for their respective colleges, followed by a Q&A session with the MIDV and the audience.
However, only one candidate from CEBA attended the event. The candidates for governor and board members were unable to attend for unknown reasons. Despite being the only representative, Ms. Zea Charlette Ramos, a candidate for vice governor, delivered her speech with commendable courage and received a round of applause from the audience for her steadfastness.
Ms. Ramos introduced three key platforms that reflect her dedication to CEBA. The first platform, CEBAktibong COOPerasyon, focuses on empowering CEBA students to secure their financial futures by actively engaging with the MSU-IIT National Multi-Purpose Cooperative. Through this initiative, Ramos aims to enhance financial literacy and cultivate a culture of savings and investment within the CEBA community. The second platform, ParaCEBAyan Eithfinity, continues the community extension project initiated by the previous vice governor, seeking to ignite the spirit of bayanihan within CEBA. Lastly, Griffins Door is a legislative platform dedicated to promoting transparency, inclusivity, and effective communication within CEBA. Ramos envisions establishing open channels of dialogue, ensuring that every studentโs voice is heard and fostering a more connected and engaged CEBA community.
As the election period continues, the CEBA community remains hopeful in finding the dedication and leadership within their candidates.

As time moves forward, the journey goes on. The beginning of the new school year, much like the sun rising and casting its light, carries a special kind of energy filled with shining hopes and possibilities. This year, at MSU-IIT, the opening events for the College of Economics, Business, and Accountancy (CEBA) took the excitement to new heights with a dynamic display at iDEYA Hall, as freshmen and returning students were welcomed with open arms into the dazzling landscape of student societies. The CEBA Executive Council masterfully headed the event, bringing together the four core societies โ JEMS, JES, JPIA, and SHTM into a dynamic hub where the studentsโ enthusiasm is in the air as they took part in various booth presentations and activities that reflect the diversity and creativity of the CEBA community.
The fairgrounds of iDEYA hall were transformed into a populated place where different societies set up their unique booth themes and offerings: from chic, pink aesthetic, to retro rush experience, making the various displays a feast to oneโs senses. The Executive Council, for one, brightened the fun and dynamic interactions by offering sweet candies and drinks to freshen up everybodyโs mood in the scorching heat. They also made sure to let everybody express their sentiments through their โPaint Me Wallโ and offered some motivational quotes to read.
It was truly a hub of fun and discovery for this yearโs school opening as it brought forth memorable expectations to look forward to. This opening event set a positive tone that will forge connections and create opportunities to nurture academic and social growth. But donโt fretโthe iDeya Hallway will still be adorned with vibrance and excitement tomorrow. Check out these well-crafted booths for the rest of the week and immerse yourselves in fun and games before the grueling work commences this semester.

As the energy of the day was still high, CEBA students engaged in the educational and challenging category game. The afternoon was filled with laughter and competitiveness as the players took turns in providing an answer that fit the chosen category, all while under time pressure. Some of the categories mentioned were names of body parts in vernacular, colors, names of the fishes, brands of cars โ crunching every category possible until the group turned smaller, and those who remained moved on to the next rounds until the finals.
The game not only tested their knowledge and quick thinking but also fostered a sense of community and joy in shared learning.

A Century of Filipino Battles in the Summer Olympics
Long ago, the Philippines had just started joining the Summer Olympics, marking its debut in Paris 1924 and making history for a Southeast Asian country to enter the competition. We gambled our lock with only one sprinter athlete โ David Nepomuceno โ but did not win.
Only the Avatar, master of all elements, could win them. But when the Philippines needed him most, he vanished.
A hundred years passed and we discovered the new Golden Boy in Paris 2024 โ an all-around gymnastics athlete named Carlos Yulo โ who managed to clinch not only the title as first male Filipino Olympian to get a gold medal, but also the title for the first Filipino Olympian to achieve two gold medals in Floor Exercise and Vault events, respectively.
Now, let's dive deep into our history of joining the Summer Olympics all throughout the years.
In our second try at Netherlands 1928, we came back stronger when we claimed our first ever medal after Teรณfilo Yldefonso, a swimming athlete, won the bronze medal in the Men's 200-meter breaststroke.
Los Angeles 1932 was also dominated by three athletes who won bronze medals in the following sports: Men's 200-meter breaststroke by Yldefonso, Boxing in Men's Bantamweight by Jose Villanueva, and Athletics in Men's High Jump by Simeon Galvez Toribio.
We also won 1 bronze medal in Berlin 1936, courtesy of Miguel White in Athletics Men's 400-meter hurdles.
Unfortunately, we did not win in London 1948, Helsinki 1952, Melbourne 1956, and Rome 1960.
The long drought was eventually broken by a Filipino Olympian Boxer, Anthony Villanueva, who won the first ever Silver Medal of the Philippines in Men's Featherweight (57kg) in Tokyo 1964.
The next following years were full of losses in Mexico 1968, Munich 1972, Montreal 1976 and Los Angeles 1984, until Olympian Boxers Leopoldo Serantes in Seoul 1988 and Roel Velasco in Barcelona 1992 joined, who both won Bronze in Light Featherweight and Light Flyweight, respectively.
The country bagged its second silver medal in Atlanta 1996 by Mansueto Velasco in the Boxing Light Flyweight event. We then lost in Sydney 2000, Athens 2004, Beijing 2008, and London 2012.
Ms. Hidilyn Diaz, the first ever Filipina Weightlifter Olympian to win not only a Medal but a silver one in Rio 2016, showed her effort and dominance to lift the 127 kg in the clean and jerk and lifting a total weight of 224 kg in the Women's 57kg event.
To top off her record, Ms. Diaz trained for the next olympic game, Tokyo 2020, and became the first Filipino Olympian to win a gold medal in the Weightlifting Women's 55kg event. Along with her are olympian boxers; Nesthy Petecio in Women's Featherweight (Silver), Carlo Paalam in Men's Flyweight (Silver), and Eumir Marcial in Men's Middleweight (Bronze).
Lastly, in Paris 2024, the Philippines also boasted its bronze medalists in Women's Boxing: Petecio in Featherweight and Aira Villegas in Flyweight, aside from Yuloโs double win.
Although Yuloโs skills and talents are great, he has a lot of gymnastics elements to learn before he is ready to compete in Los Angeles 2028. But we believe, Yulo will win the Gold.
