FWD BAGS 2ND PLACE IN ASEAN-INSPIRED COSTUME MAKING COMPETITION
By Edgian James C. Florida
Fashion Design and Merchandizing students of the Fashion and Wellness Department, College of Industrial Technology bags 2nd place during ASEAN-inspired and Eco-friendly Costume-Making Contest spearheaded by the Commission on Higher Education Region VI during the 2022 ASEAN Music and Fashion Festival.
The design made by RJ Paca-oncis, Gilbert Osabel, Zedric Doroja was showcased at STI West Negros, Bacolod City on September 29, 2022. Other students involved were Lisha Anne Salmorin as model and Jairo Jamelarin as Make-up Artist.
Designers made a "Golden Vision" inspired piece treasuring disposable into Filipino Culture -Based Fashion Ensemble. The piece inspired by the IloIlo Science and Technology University gold banner color of making innovation to present the essence of recycled items as well as to contribute in the solution of climate change featuring a new image of Visayan Filipino Myth.
Recycled materials utilized in this fashion ensemble were: Plastic spoons, barbeque sticks, fabric swatches, plastic bags, RYPIC Abacot fabric (30% abaca and 70% cotton) as pure natural fabric made from the Regional Yarn Production and Innovation Center at ISAT U Miag-ao Campus, trimmings (metallic gold), glue sticks, spray paint, wire, thread, zipper, lace and hooks and eyes.
The golden ring represents Mother Earth suffering from climate change and depicts the sun that is the epitome of male perfection. This also manifests the prevailing phenomenon of the universe. The headdress symbolizes strength and power of a man that collaborates with the feminity of a woman. While the dress designs show armadillo scales that protect and control the effects of pollution. Further, the flowing skirt gives a wide range of opportunities for mankind to think, innovate, and engage in research for positive actions portrayed by Visayan Filipino Myth, Liadlao.
Despite the time constraint and other challenges experienced by the team, their resilience still prevailed. “Despite all the trials and problems the team went home with pride , honor, and excellence”, Zedric Doroja said.
The contest was participated by tertiary education students enrolled in any State Universities and Colleges, Local Community Colleges and private Higher Education institutions in Region V

By Rocky B. LLABAN
At the height of lockdown, FabLab pooled together resources and came up with products that helped prevent the spread of the Covid-19 virus.
