Wooden Furniture with Visayan Birha Designs on Oct 13, 2023 in Gravity Art Space, Quezon City.
GAS proudly presents 🪜𝐄𝐗𝐏𝐎𝐒𝐄: 𝐃𝐞𝐬𝐢𝐠𝐧 𝐄𝐱𝐩𝐥𝐨𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐨𝐧 𝐕𝐢𝐬𝐚𝐲𝐚𝐧 𝐁𝐢𝐫𝐡𝐚, a solo exhibition by 𝐏𝐞𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐉𝐚𝐦𝐞𝐬 𝐅𝐚𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐥𝐠𝐨. Coming here at GAS this Friday, October 13, 2023.

The family photo displayed in the exhibition serves an entry point for me to give everyone a context, it will also serve as a point of reference for the issues I want to raise through this project.
The photo was taken around 1986 to 1987. The family photo was taken in front of our bamboo house that was designed and built by my father with my grandfathers and uncles. The façade of the house displays a beautifully crafted bamboo birha.
I opted to explore the possibilities of using elements used in making a bamboo birha and apply it to other forms like furniture. I also did a fieldwork to document different designs of bamboo birha around Panay Island, and this exposed the danger of losing this tradition. As I went around the island there were noticeable issues exposed. Birha is usually present in bamboo and unfinished concrete houses, but it becomes irrelevant to finished concrete houses and buildings. Manifestations of birha designs were not also present in other forms, it is a simple indication of the craft not being valued outside to its usual forms like windows and fences.
The collections of works try to respond to the issues gathered during the fieldwork, by applying it to familiar furniture pieces. I wish to suggest to explore this important Visayan tradition in other forms and expose it to the mainstream for people to also respond to it.
