๐ฟ What happens at a Stated Meeting?
A Stated Meeting in Freegardenry refers to a regularly scheduled meeting of a Free Gardeners' lodge. These meetings are held monthly and serve as a time for lodge members to conduct business, discuss lodge matters, and plan upcoming events. Stated Meetings are governed by a set of rules and procedures known as the lodge's bylaws and are presided over by the lodge's officers, including the Worthy Master (WM), Deputy Worthy Master (DWM), Worthy Secretary (WS) and Worthy Treasurer (WT). During a Stated Meeting, the lodge may also conduct ceremonial or ritualistic work, confer degrees, and welcome visiting brethren from other lodges.
๐ฟ Who may attend a Stated Meeting?
Any Apprentice Gardener (AG), Journeyman Gardener (JG), or Master Gardener (MG) in good standing or visiting from a lodge recognized by the International Order of Free Gardeners (IOFG), is welcome to attend our Stated Meeting.
Non-Gardeners (i.e., visitors) and Seekers may attend the 6 pm dinner before the Stated Meeting. The dinner before a Stated Meeting would be a great way for visitors to meet Free Gardeners and learn about Freegardenry and our lodge.
Tyler's Notes: If the lodge opens the Stated Meeting on the 1st degree, then AGs, JGs, and MGs from any recognized lodge may attend (great for IOFG or visiting and new AGs to see how our lodge is managed). If the Lodge opens on a 2nd degree, then only JGs and MGs can attend. If the Lodge opens on a 3rd degree, then only Master Gardeners can attend. If a new Apprentice is present, the WM will open on a 1st Degree so that the new Apprentice can attend. If you are a non-Gardener/Seeker and plan to join us at dinner, make sure to inform the WM or WS so that preparations may be done accordingly.

National Heroes Day (Filipino: ๐ป๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐ ๐ฌ๐๐๐ ๐๐ ๐๐๐ ๐ญ๐๐๐๐๐) is a public holiday in the Philippines celebrated annually on the last Monday of August as a tribute to Filipino Heroes.
The holiday traces its roots to the ๐ฎ๐๐ ๐๐ ๐ป๐๐๐๐ ๐ท๐๐๐๐ in August 1896, which marked the beginning of the ๐ป๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐ ๐ฝ๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐. The date and the location of the cry has been long disputed. From 1911 to 1962, the cry was thought to have emanated from Balintawak (now in modern-day Balingasa, Quezon City) on August 26. On 1963, by recommendation of historian Teodoro Agoncillo, the date was changed to August 23, and the location was changed to Pugad Lawin in Caloocan (now in modern day Gulod, Novaliches, Quezon City). Due to disputed date, and with the consensus that the cry occurred in late August, the holiday was then set in the last week of August.
The observance of National Heroes Day was already present during the American colonial period. Act No. 3827 by the Philippine Legislature enacted on October 28, 1931, designated every last Sunday of August as National Heroes Day. However, Bonifacio Day established by virtue of Act No. 2946 of 1921 was also dedicated to anonymous Filipino heroes. In practice, National Heroes Day celebrations were observed on the same day as Bonifacio Day. This continued during the Japanese occupation during World War II and some years after the United States granted the Philippines independence in 1946.
President Elpidio Quirino issued Administrative Order No. 190 in 1952 which reverted National Heroes Day back to the last Sunday of August. Administrative Code of 1987 of President Corazon Aquino designated the day as a regular holiday. The date of the holiday was revised again in 2007, this time to the last Monday of August, via Republic Act No. 9492 which was signed into law by President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo.
The law itself does not explicitly name any specific individual to be commemorated during National Heroes Day.
Commemorations often include key figures in Philippine history who are regarded as national heroes though it could also include "lesser-known" and "ordinary" Filipinos. Examples include Overseas Filipino Workers and frontline workers during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Order of Free Gardeners is a fraternal society that was founded in Scotland in the middle of the 17th century and later spread to England and Ireland. Like numerous other friendly societies of the time, its principal aim was the sharing of secret knowledge linked to the profession and mutual aid. In the 19th century, its activities of mutual insurance became predominant.
๐ฟ ๐ณ๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐ ๐ท๐๐๐๐ ๐๐ ๐ฐ๐๐๐ ๐ท๐๐๐๐๐๐
The most ancient evidence of the order is a record of the minutes of the Haddington lodge, opened 16 August 1676, which begins with a compilation of fifteen rules called Interjunctions for ye Fraternity of Gardiners of East Lothian.
Scotland was, in the 17th century, subject to civil unrest and intermittent famines. Rich landowners were interested in Renaissance architecture and the design of formal gardens for their vast estates. The first members of the Haddington lodge were not gardeners by profession, but small landowners and farmers who practised gardening for pleasure. Not practising an urban profession, they could not obtain the status of an incorporation (similar to a guild in England) and modelled their organisation on the masons, who had an organisation, additional to and independent of their incorporation: the lodge.
This organisation set up in Haddington could be viewed as a primitive form of trade union. It organised co-operation between members, provided practical training and ethical development, and supported the poor, widows, and orphans. The lodges of gardeners were also the first to organise floral exhibitions, from 1772.
๐ฟ ๐ฏ๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐ ๐ท๐๐๐๐ ๐๐ ๐ฑ๐๐๐
About 1715, a lodge similar to Haddington was founded in Dunfermline, supported by two members of the local aristocracy, the Earl of Moray and the Marquess of Tweeddale. From its origin, it admitted numerous non-gardeners as members. It created a charitable society to benefit the widows, orphans, and poor of the lodge, sponsored a horse race and organised an annual horticultural fair before transforming itself little by little into a mutual aid society. It reached a membership of 212.
There is little information on the professions of the members before the end of the 17th century. During this period the Haddington lodge included merchants, tailors and clerks as well as gardeners. All the members of the lodge were originally from the county. On the other hand, the lodge at Dunfermline, former capital of Scotland, prided itself on counting among its members "numerous renowned persons of Edinburgh, as well as East Lothian including the Marquess of Tweeddale, the count of Haddington (Earl of Haddington), Lord William Hay etc".
The first record of the Dunfermline lodge was established in 1716 with the signatures of 214 members. At this time the membership was composed of a majority of gardeners by trade, but also numerous artisans and two members of the local aristocracy. Rapidly, the membership grew and the social level roseโto the point that the professional gardeners no longer formed the majority of new membersโbut the recruitment remained local. In 1721, 101 new members of all social statuses were admitted into the lodge, from gardeners and butchers to the Duke of Atholl. The following years saw a fairly large number of aristocrats initiated in Free Gardening in the Dunfermline lodge, even while they remain on the edge of the Haddington lodge, which remains mainly active. Most of these people possess famous gardens. Starting from 1736, the date of the creation of the (Masonic) Grand Lodge of Scotland, this tendency ceased and there were no more initiations of aristocrats in the Dunfermline lodge.
The lodges of Haddington and Dunfermline expanded their recruitment area widely without authorising creation of new lodges. It was only in 1796 that three new lodges were created: at Arbroath, Bothwell, and Cumbnathan.
During the 18th century, about twenty other lodges were created, always in Scotland, and on 6 November 1849, they organised a meeting with a view to create a Grand Lodge. On this date, The Ancient Order of Free Gardeners Scotland formed at Penicuik.
Establishments then accelerated, and in 1859, in Edinburgh, the Grand Lodge gathered representatives from more than 100 lodges, including three established in the USA.
In 1956, due to falling attendances in Scotland, the Grand Lodge charter was transferred to Cape Town, South Africa. In September 2005, the Ancient Order returned to Scotland when the Countess of Elgin Lodge no. 105 received its Charter to meet in Dysart, Fife. 2006 sees the return of the Grand Lodge of Free Gardeners Scotland from Cape Town to Scotland.
At the peak of the movement there were more than 10,000 Free Gardeners for the Lothians alone, belonging to more than 50 lodges.
Encouraged by this success, competing horticultural societies appeared during the 19th century. Unlike the Free Gardeners, they did not have a charitable role, mutual help, or rituals, and they would accept anybody, male or female, who paid their dues.
๐ฟ The Twentieth Century
In the 20th century, the two World Wars called up most of the members. The economic crisis of 1929 weakened their charitable capacities. The social protection laws weakened the attraction of mutual aid, before the National Insurance Act 1946 removed their entire purpose. Even before the Second World War, the number of deaths exceeded the number of admissions to the lodges. In 1939, the minutes of the Haddington lodge were interrupted until 1952, when its eight last members attempted in vain to relaunch it. Despite the recruitment of new members, the Haddington fraternity pronounced its dissolution on 22 February 1953. The Dunfermline lodge lasted until the middle of the 1980s.
These disappearances were part of a wider social change. In 1950 there were around 30,000 Friendly Societies in the UK, while in 2000 there were fewer than 150. In 2000, the research of R. Cooper counted no more than a single lodge (in Bristol) for Great Britain, but mentioned the survival of the Order of Free Gardeners in the Antilles (Caribbean British Order of Free Gardners) and in Australia. In 2002, a conservation society was created in Scotland with aims of research and conservation of the traditions of this Order and some lodges were revived on this occasion.
As of 2013, The Grand United Order of Free Gardeners still operates in Victoria, Australia from the East Kew Masonic Centre. It meets monthly under the auspices of the Victorian Grand Lodge No. 1, and is the only known lodge operating in the southern hemisphere. In the 2020s,
Free Gardeners experienced a significant growth spurt at the turn of the last century, however, with new lodges subsequently formed in Sweden, Germany, Switzerland, Italy, Canada, the USA, the Philippines, and elsewhere, with a lineage going back to the Scottish Grand Lodge.
๐ฟ Jardin del Oriente Lodge No 57 Isabela de Basilan
On 24 March 2024, the Jardin del Oriente Lodge No. 57 of Isabela de Basilan was established with patents issued by the Grand Lodge in London, United Kingdom, a continuation of the long lineage of Freegardeners which began its storied march through time, from the wintry, windswept coasts and highlands of Scotland to the lush, tropical islands of the Pacific ocean.
We are legion. We are one. And we are 348 years old!

๐ฟThe Oldest Gardens of the World
Gardening first began in the forests in pre-historic times, and around 10,000 BC is thought to have evolved to the enclosure of outdoor space.
The Epic of Gilgamesh, thought to have been written as early as 2100 BC contains the oldest mentions of gardens in surviving literature. Gilgamesh states that his city Uruk was โone third gardensโ, and in the story visits the โGarden of the godsโ, a garden with precious stones, pearls and jewel-laden trees.
๐ฟMissouri Botanical Garden ๐บ๐ฒ United States
The Missouri Botanical Garden is the oldest botanical garden in continuous operation in the USA.
Founded in 1859, it houses one of the worldโs biggest collections of rare and endangered orchids, and features 79 acres of horticultural displays.
The gardens were originally commissioned and funded by philanthropist Henry Shaw, who hired the services of George I. Barnett to design amongst other things a herbarium โ which has now grown to house over 6.6 million specimens โ making it the second biggest in the US.
There are more than 4,800 trees on the grounds of the Missouri Botanical Garden, with some specimens dating back to the 19th century.

๐ฟOrto Botanico di Firenze ๐ฎ๐น Italy
Also known as Giardino dei Semplici, the โGarden of Simplesโ, the garden was founded on December 1st 1545, by Cosimo I deโ Medici, the Grand Duke of Tuscany.
Early on the gardenโs prime interest was medicinal plants, but in 1753 the Societร Botanica was created and the focus changed to experimental agriculture.
Today the site occupies 2.3 hectares and contains over 9,000 plant specimens, including a Taxus baccata tree planted in 1720.
Estimated Age: 479 years old
๐ฟOrto Botanico di Padova ๐ฎ๐น Italy
Founded by the Venetian Republic in 1545 on the property of the Benedictine monks of St. Justine, the Orto Botanico di Padova in Padua, Italy, is the oldest surviving university botanical garden in the world.
The collection held many rare plants and was often targeted by thieves, so a circular enclosing wall had to be built around the gardens to protect them.
Estimated Age: 479 years old
๐ฟRyoan-ji ๐ฏ๐ต Japan
Although the site has temples and a history going back to the 11th century, the garden at Ryลan-ji was thought to have been built between 1450 and 1473.

๐ฟClassical Gardens of Suzhou ๐น๐ผ China
The Classical Gardens of Suzhou in Jiangsu Province, China, were founded in the 6th Century, at a time that the city was capital of the Wu Kingdom.
Many dozens of gardens were built, and over 50 still survive โ nine of which: Humble Administratorโs Garden, Lingering Garden, Net Masterโs Garden, the Mountain Villa with Embracing Beauty, the Canglang Pavilion, the Lion Grove Garden, the Garden of Cultivation, the Coupleโs Garden Retreat, and the Retreat & Reflection Garden, are considered to be the embodiment of Chinese โMountain and Waterโ gardening.
The oldest known of these gardens is the Canglang Pavilion, which was built in the 11th century on the site of another destroyed garden.
This means that the Canglang Pavilion is possibly the oldest surviving garden in the world.
Estimated Age: 980 years old
๐ฟWater Gardens of Sagiriya ๐ฑ๐ฐ Sri Lanka
The oldest surviving garden of all is on an archaeological site. It was probably created to decorate the imperial citadel of prince Kasyapa, between 477 and 495 CE. The garden is divided into three sections: a water garden designed with a Persian charbagh quadrilateral layout, a terraced garden laid out on a pre-existing slope and a garden of stones and cavities connected by winding paths.
Estimated age: 2,519 years
๐ฟHanging Gardens of Babylon ๐ฎ๐ถ Iraq
One of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World listed by Hellenic culture. They were described as a remarkable feat of engineering with an ascending series of tiered gardens containing a wide variety of trees, shrubs, and vines, resembling a large green mountain constructed of mud bricks. It was said to have been built in the ancient city of Babylon, near present-day Hillah, Babil province, in Iraq. The Hanging Gardens' name is derived from the Greek word ฮบฯฮตฮผฮฑฯฯฯฯ (kremastรณs, lit. 'overhanging'), which has a broader meaning than the modern English word "hanging" and refers to trees being planted on a raised structure such as a terrace.
The Hanging Gardens of Babylon were actually the well-documented gardens constructed by the Assyrian king Sennacherib (reigned 704 โ 681 BC) for his palace at Nineveh.
Estimated age: 2,705 years
The ancient Order has been around for 348 years, the ancient Craft of Gardenry for much, much longer.

It is with deep humility and great pride that I stand before you today as the first Worthy Lodge Master of Jardin del Oriente Lodge No. 57. This moment marks not just the beginning of my term, but the beginning of our collective journey as a lodge, united in the noble principles of the International Order of Free Gardeners.
The establishment of this lodge in Isabela de Basilan is a testament to our shared vision of growth, service, and fellowship. We are the gardeners of life, tasked with nurturing the seeds of brotherhood, cultivating the spirit of unity, and harvesting the fruits of our labors for the betterment of our community.
As Free Gardeners, we are guided by values that are as timeless as they are relevant: charity, truth, and brotherly love. These principles are the very soil in which our lodge is rooted. In a world that often seems divided, our duty is to be a beacon of hope, sowing seeds of peace, understanding, and compassion.
Our work as gardeners goes beyond the symbolic. We are called to till the fields of society, we are called to plant ideas that inspire change, and we are called to cultivate relationships that build bridges rather than walls. Let us not forget that the strength of our lodge lies in the diversity of its members, each of us bringing unique talents and perspectives that, when combined, create something truly magnificent.
In the coming years, we will face challenges, as all gardeners do. There will be storms to weather and droughts to endure. But let us face these challenges with the same determination and resilience that brought us together. Let us remember that the most beautiful gardens are those that have been tended with care, dedication, and love.
As your Worthy Lodge Master, I pledge to lead with integrity, to listen with an open heart, and to act with the best interests of our lodge and community in mind. I am but one gardener among many, and it is through our collective effort that we will see our lodge flourish.
In closing, I would like to extend my deepest gratitude to all who have made this day possible, to those who have entrusted me with this responsibility, and to each of you for your unwavering support and dedication to the principles of our order.
Together, we will build a lodge that not only stands as a pillar of strength in our community but also as a testament to the enduring values of the International Order of Free Gardeners.
Thank you, muchisimas gracias, daghang salamat sa inyong tanan, and may we all be blessed with a bountiful harvest of friendship, wisdom, and brotherly love.
Wassalam.
