Etiquette when Visiting Gardens

There are rules to consider when you visit gardens (especially home gardens). These rules are very important considering that your host/the gardener is letting you into his/her private space, out of the sheer goodness of his/her heart to enable you to have a peek at his/her collection.
Here are some guidelines:

📍Don’t poke, touch or pinch the plants as much as possible. For succulents, the leaves can be easily detached. Always ask permission before touching anything.

📍Don’t take a flower, leaves, cuttings or seeds (unless you bought it).

📍Don’t remove plant labels.

📍 Ask the host if it is OK to take photos (most will say yes).

📍Bear in mind that not all plants are for sale (especially in home gardens). Please do not ask why. 😁

📍Respect the gardener if he/she doesn’t want to sell your desired plant. Not all gardeners are sellers, most of them are passionate hobbyists / collectors. If you want to buy a plant from the gracious host, ask politely but do not insist if he/ she says NO.

📍Do not insist the price you want. If you cannot afford it, look for other plants within your budget.

📍Do not ask for cuttings from a lush plant or pups from clumping succulents unless the host offers.

📍Ask questions regarding plant care. Most hobbyists are willing to share their experiences and care tips to budding enthusiasts.

📍Ignore what you don’t care or like. Just keep it to yourself. Gardens, especially home gardens are intensely personal gardens and may not be suitable to your taste.

📍Say thank you and compliment the gardener on what you like in his/her garden.
