My grueling experience with Covid-19

I could probably safely say that I was one of the first people to have a close call with Covid-19.

During the first lockdown, I volunteered to assist our frontliners by offering rides for them from a meeting point to their respective hospitals. There were no jeepneys and no buses. Ambulances were the only vehicles you could see on the main roads.

I saw the many patients waiting in emergency rooms as hospital staff were overwhelmed by the surge of cases.

This year, I thought Covid-19 was already a thing of the past. If I was spared then, I definitely wasn’t this time. I got Covid-19 last July 7, 2022 and even though I was vaccinated, I still experienced severe symptoms.

Was I in denial? Yes. I even told myself my product (a Rapid Covid-19 Antigen test using phlegm as samples) might have returned a false positive. So I took the test again and still got the same result.

I got Covid-19.

The fear, anxiety and disbelief kept on creeping in my brain. Who were the people I was last in contact with? Were they experiencing any symptoms? Was I in contact with my apo?

My family and I isolated ourselves immediately and drank vitamins C and D, and lots and lots of salabat. After a grueling week, the symptoms subsided. We continued our isolation for another week and then I tested again with our own Rapid Covid Antigen test. Fortunately, I tested negative. Thank you Lord, I thought. To be sure, we continued our isolation for another ten days before going back to work.

I had experienced the very disease that I helped others not to get. Partida I was vaccinated and healthy, and it was still a scary and terrible experience. What more those who got sick before the vaccine, or those with comorbidities?

This was definitely not how I envisioned testing the Rapid Antigen test kit as well. For me, I just thought it a fool’s comfort (Konsuwelo de Bobo) that at least the product I am currently marketing in testing Covid-19 really works.
