we are reminded today of the ultimate victory of light over darkess, and love over despair!

Celebrating World Down Syndrome Day!

If you are celebrating World Down Syndrome Day with us - I hope you celebrate all of who my child is.

I hope you celebrate his full humanity, along with others who are like him.

I hope that you see that yes, he has many similarities to you and I, and he has many differences.

I hope you celebrate that his differences are challenging and also a large part of what makes him who he is.

I hope you celebrate that success for him may look different, and it may not. No matter what it looks like… His success does not affect his worth.

I hope you will believe me when I say that he has a different life. And his different life is not a less than life.

I hope you will look at him and know that you have much to offer him with your inclusion and friendship. And he, likewise, has much to offer you.

Today, we celebrate with people like my son. People who are often pushed to the very edges of society because we are a society with skewed priorities

My son, is a whole human. He is sweet and sassy. He is stubborn and strong. He has learning delays and he is smart. His communication lags, and he is funny.

His life may look a bit different than yours. But his life is no less. He is no less. His peers are no less.

My son and his peers are apart of the world’s intentional diversity.

And today we celebrate that.

“I’m so excited in my heart.”

Our son with Down syndrome said this one morning and it has since become apart of our family vernacular. When we have something fun coming up, when someone gets a big win, when it just feels so great to be home together- “I’m so excited in my heart,” we’ll say to each other.

I saw something recently where someone said Down syndrome is just a part of their child. The way I see it, is that that extra chromosome is in every part of him. And I think it’s laced with a bit of magic. That magic is the ability to see through the clutter. That magic is the ability to see what’s important. And through his eyes- we are able to see a bit clearer too.

For World Down Syndrome Day, I am thankful for many ways someone Down syndrome has impacted our lives. What I am most thankful for is the lens in which we now see. Through this child, we can see what’s important- it’s the heart.
