It's A Leap Year – How will you be marking the extra day?
Why is there a leap day?
February 29 is a date that usually occurs every four years, and is called leap day. This day is added to the calendar in leap years as a corrective measure because the Earth does not orbit the sun in precisely 365 days. The Gregorian calendar is a modification of the Julian calendar first used by the Romans.

Why should I register a company?
So often people ask the question ‘Do I really need to register my business?’. While at face value it seems registering a company is not a necessity, years of research have proven that it is indeed important. In fact, your success in business may actually depend on it. Read on and let us know if there is any that we missed in the comments.
Here are the 8 reasons why you should register your business:
1. To be more professional
First impressions are important they say. This is even more true in business. Would you prefer to buy an expensive smartphone that has been created by an individual or by a company? That’s the power of registering a company. It establishes you as a professional in your field. You prove to the world that you are legitimate and are not after a quick buck. It shows your customers that you are serious and will not simply disappear tomorrow.
2. To protect and secure your business name
Registering your business name protects it from being used by other businesses. When you register a company, the name that you choose is reserved for you only. You may not have plans to start operating right away but registering that name that you have always wanted ensures that its available to you when you are finally ready to launch your dream business. Once your company name has been incorporated and registered, you can further restrict its usage by registering it as a trade name or trademark. This ensures that no-one else can legally use it.
3. To get access to funding
One of the advantages you enjoy when you register a company is the increased access that you get to funding sources. There are various government loans available for youths and small businesses. Besides, various economic development agencies, banks, and NGOs provide low-interest loans to small to medium enterprise owners who may not qualify for traditional commercial loans.
4. To separate personal and business finances
Most small business owners discover painfully that mixing business and personal finances are a recipe for disaster. The majority of small businesses that fail fall into this trap. If you keep business finances in your pocket you run into the temptation of ‘helping out Uncle Thomas’ when he asks for financial help. And when month-end comes you discover that you don’t have enough to pay for business rentals or suppliers. Having your business incorporated helps you separate these two so that you don’t run into problems tomorrow.
5. To participate in tender processes
To apply for both government and commercial tenders, you need to be a legalized business entity. All tenders have on their top of the list the requirement to be an incorporated company. Simply put: ‘No registration papers, no tender acceptance’. Most tenders are advertised for big contracts and orders, so this represents a very real opportunity for your business to break out and make some large amounts of cash. Don’t neglect this.
6. Lower taxes
When doing business you have the option to do so as an individual or as a registered business. When you trade as an individual, you pay tax on the additional income you receive from your business. Unfortunately, you don’t get any tax deductions on the expenses you incur in running the business e.g. internet costs, telephone costs, transport, rents, etc. These are all regarded as personal expenses more or less. One of the more appealing reasons for registering a business, as opposed to simply reporting your additional income, is the extra money you have leftover. In Zimbabwe, businesses receive tax deductions for business-related expenses, including use of your car, a home office or a rented storefront, insurance, and more.
7. Liability protection
There are two types of businesses registered in Zimbabwe and these are the Private Limited Companies and Private Business Corporations. The business is treated as a separate legal entity from its owners and enjoys corporate citizenship in Zimbabwe as if it were an individual. Both types of businesses offer limited liability to their owners or shareholders. Both business types provide personal liability protection for business decisions or actions of the business. This means that if the company incurs debt or is sued, its members are not required to satisfy the claims with their personal assets. By registering your business, your business and personal assets are separated from each other. There are many reasons to incorporate but for the protection of your family, this may be the most important.
8. Business continuity
Do the names Irvines, Microsoft, Facebook or Google sound familiar to you? Good. What do they all have in common? They were started by individuals. And because these individuals registered their companies it means their businesses can continue without them. They are now separate entities from their person. That’s the power of registering a business. It ensures the continuity of your business beyond just you. Customers are interested in knowing if your company has a future and if the company can continue serving them in your absence.

PH records 8.26-M tourist arrivals for 2019
By Faye Almazan
February 18, 2020
THE country’s tourism industry welcomed 8.26 million foreign visitors last year, a 15.24-percent increase from the 7.16 million arrivals recorded in 2018.
The figure is also marginally higher than the Department of Tourism (DoT)’s 2019 target of 8.2 million, set in the National Tourism Development Plan for 2016 to 2022.
“This heralds a new milestone in the country’s tourism history, breaching the eight-millionth mark. Without a doubt, our convergence programs with other government agencies, particularly in improving access as well as product development and marketing initiatives with local government and private sectors have greatly paid off. These gains we hope to sustain even as we face global challenges,” Tourism Secretary Bernadette Romulo-Puyat said in a statement.
South Koreans remained on top in the most number of tourist arrivals in the country, recording 1.989 million arrivals last year, a 22.48-percent increase from the 1.624 million in 2018.
China followed with 1.743 million, reflecting a whopping increase of 38.58 percent from 1.257 million in 2018.
The United States placed third at 1.064 million, a 2.90-percent growth from 1.034 million, while Japan ranked fourth with 682,788, 8.07-percent better than the 2018 figure of 631,821.
Taiwan completed the top five, registering a 35.01-percent growth or 327,273 from 242,411 in 2018.
All months, except for January, registered a double-digit growth rate with August exhibiting the highest at 27.54 percent or 702,843 from 551,088 in 2018.
Meanwhile, the month of December recorded the highest tourist arrivals at 776,798.
“This is a high point for Philippine tourism as it depicts our solidarity and commitment to make tourism work and prove its full potential as a sustainable and inclusive economic activity. The record-breaking numbers solidify the effectiveness of the Tourism Act of 2009, which celebrated its 10-year anniversary in 2019,” Puyat added.
It continued with “It’s More Fun in the Philippines” campaign last year, alongside championing for sustainable tourism in the country.
The “Save Our Spots” movement became the industry’s battle cry to encourage visitors to become responsible tourists and do their part in preserving the country’s tourist spots.
The Philippines was also awarded a number of international travel awards in 2019, including the World’s Leading Dive Destination and Asia’s Leading Tourism Board at the 2019 World Travel Awards and Excellent Partner Award for sustainable efforts in the rehabilitated island of Boracay.
PH records 8.26-M tourist arrivals for 2019 – The Manila Times THE country’s tourism industry welcomed 8.26 million foreign visitors last year, a 15.24-percent increase from the 7.16 million arrivals recorded in 2018.

Congratulations to the CITY OF LEGAZPI and BICOL UNIVERSITY, official host to the 2020 NATIONAL SCUAA GAMES on March 22-29, 2020.
The State Colleges and Universities Athletic Association (SCUAA) is an association of 93 institutions, conferences, organizations, and individuals that organizes the athletic programs of different state colleges and universities in the Philippines. SCUAA is one of the inter-collegiate sports associations in the Philippines, the union of seven major state colleges and universities in Metro Manila.
The organization was established as State Colleges Athletic Association (SCAA) in 1953 encompassing the Philippine Normal College, Central Luzon Agricultural College, the Philippine College of Commerce, and the Philippine College of Arts and Trade.
Despite many years of challenges at the forefront, SCUAA was able to gain ground in various regions in the country through the creation of regional or satellite SCUAA, hence the establishment of a National SCUAA in the mid-1980s. Two years after, the first National SCUAA Olympics was held with member state colleges and universities from Regions I, IV, V, VIII, and NCR participating. Wikipedia.

Filipinos are known to be family-oriented with very close family ties.
Many of us believe that eating food made from sticky rice like bibingka (a type of baked rice cake), biko (sweet rice cake) and tikoy (also known as nian gao, which is translated as Chinese new year's cake) will bind families together stronger.
This is also believed to deliver good fortune.

SAAN GALING ANG TRADISYON NG NOCHE BUENA?
The traditional Christmas Eve feast is referred to as the “Noche Buena,” which is Spanish for “night of goodness.”
The Noche Buena is also a time for extended families to gather together at one house to partake of the feast.
But while modern Filipino families can have their Noche Buena at any time on Christmas Eve, it wasn’t always that way.
The Noche Buena actually came into being because the Spanish friars required Filipino churchgoers to fast until Christmas morning back in the 16th century.
Since the natives were usually very hungry after coming back from the Christmas midnight Mass (and since any hour after midnight was technically considered to be part of the next day’s morning), they conjured up the nocturnal feast before going back to bed.
