EYE HEALTH TIPS FOR PEOPLE WITH CATARACT

Have an annual eye exam if you’re 65 years or older, every two years if younger. Avoid prolonged exposure to sunlight. Wear a hat and sunglasses with at least 99% UV protection during sunny days. Quit smoking. Use brighter lights for reading and other activities. Limit night driving once night vision, halos, or glare become problems. Consider cataract surgery if your cataract already interferes with daily activities.

Consult your ophthalmologist for more information about cataract.

WHAT IS PTERYGIUM OR SURFER'S EYES?

A pterygium is a noncancerous growth of the conjunctiva or mucous membrane that covers the white part of the eye over the cornea (clear front covering of the eye). Also called surfer's eye, a pterygium is often shaped like a wedge. It usually does not cause problems or require treatment, but can be removed if it interferes with vision.

Ask your eye doctor for more information about Pterygium or Surfer’s eyes.

LUBRICATING EYE DROPS FOR EYE STRAIN

Lubricating eye drops or artificial tears add moisture to the eyes to relieve discomfort due to eye strain. You can buy lubricating eye drops without a prescription. There are many available brands, but no single brand works best for all types of dry eye. You may have to try a few different brands to find the one that works best for your eyes.

If your eye strain persists, consult an ophthalmologist.

WHEN TO HAVE CATARACTS REMOVED

Cataracts can be removed only with surgery. But you don’t have to remove a cataract if your cataract symptoms are not bothering you very much. Your ophthalmologist can prescribe a new pair of eyeglasses to help you see better.

However, when cataracts prevent you from doing things you want or need to do and interfere with your daily activities, you should consider cataract surgery. Ask an ophthalmologist for more information about cataract surgery.

QUITTING SMOKING REDUCES THE RISK OF AGE-RELATED MACULAR DEGENERATION

Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is a condition in which a part of the retina called the macula is damaged. This leads to loss of central vision and the ability to see fine details; peripheral (side) vision stays normal. Studies show that smokers are more likely to develop AMD than people who never smoked.

Consult your ophthalmologist about AMD.

Celebrate Sight Saving Month this August by taking care of your eyes. If you have no signs or risk factors for eye disease, you should see an ophthalmologist to get a baseline eye disease screening at age 40.

If you have symptoms or a family history of eye disease, diabetes or high blood pressure, your ophthalmologist will prescribe how frequently your eyes should be examined.
