UP Los Baños (UPLB) is the top performing school in the August 2024 Registered Electrical Engineers Licensure Examination, with all its 22 examinees passing the exam with flying colors. UP’s Laguna-based constituent university achieved a 100% passing rate.

In compliance with OC Memorandum No. 116, Series of 2024, the Institute of Chemistry was the first to undergo a Post External Quality Assurance (Post-EQA) Assessment on 11 September 2024 at the Physical Science Building. The post-assessment workshop was led by Professor Leila S. Africa from the Institute of Human Nutrition and Food, College of Human Ecology, and Associate Professor Edmund G. Centeno from the College of Development Communication. Outgoing Director Professor Marivic S. Lacsamana, along with 19 IC faculty members, participated in the half-day workshop. The workshop focused on formulating plans and targets to address areas for improvement identified during the EQA conducted in September 2023, in preparation for the 2025 Type F - AUN-QA assessment.

QAO Director Dr. Myra G. Borines, accompanied by former QAO Director Dr. Nina M. Cadiz, College QA Officers, and QAO staff, visited Far Eastern University (FEU) on July 17, 2024, to gather information regarding preparations for institutional assessment. FEU is scheduled to undergo institutional assessment in November 2024, while UPLB will undergo the assessment in 2026. Both universities shared their best practices in Quality Assurance. They were welcomed by VP for Academic Development Dr. Evangeline P. Bautista, along with Academic Quality Assurance (AQA) Director Percival S. Paras and the AQA Team, Dean Aisa P. Arlos, Director Joseph R. Jintalan, and Director Achilles Alfred Ferranco.

The newly appointed Director of UP Manila QAO, Dr. Bhabita V. Murjani, along with Assistant Director Dr. Emely D. Dicolen, visited UPLB QAO on July 5, 2024, for benchmarking purposes. UP Manila has recently established its Quality Assurance (QA) Office and is seeking guidance on setting up their office and planning necessary activities.

The 16th batch of The Assessor Training Workshop for AUN-QA Programme Assessment (Tier 2 Training) was held from May 23 to 29, 2024, at the Industrial University of Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam.
For this batch, College Quality Assurance Officers (CQAOs) Dr. Adeliza A. Dorado (CAFS), Dr. Edmund G. Centeno (CDC), and Dr. Rhea L. Gumasing (CPAf) participated and successfully completed the seven-day training. The CQAOs were joined by Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs, Professor Agham C. Cuevas, who recently completed his Tier 1 training in April 2024.

At the end of this training, participants are expected to have the competence to carry out AUN-QA Programme assessments and conduct desktop and site assessments. This training is crucial, as these CQAOs are in charge of the degree programs scheduled to undergo AUN-QA Programme assessment in 2025.

Four UPLB degree programs are scheduled for AUN-QA Programme Assessment in 2025. In preparation for the assessment, the Quality Assurance Office (QAO) convened a meeting with representatives from the degree programs and the University Planning and Management Office (UPMO) to discuss several matters that need to be addressed beforehand, as the assessment includes facility visits at both the program and university level. The meeting focused particularly on the repairs of buildings, offices, and other facilities under the purview of UPMO.

The meeting was facilitated by QAO Director Myra G. Borines and attended by UPMO Deputy Director Guillermo C. Suñega Jr., UPMO Section Chiefs, College Quality Assurance Officers, and the degree programs’ persons-in-charge (PICs) and representatives.

VC Cuevas Attends the 18th AUN-QA Tier 1 Training Course in Bangkok, Thailand

The 18th ASEAN University Network Quality Assessment (AUN-QA) Tier 1 Training Course for Accomplishing Programme Assessment (Version 4.0) was conducted onsite in Bangkok, Thailand, from April 2 to 5, 2024.
The training course was attended by academic professionals from various ASEAN universities, including Dr. Agham C. Cuevas, the Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs at the University of the Philippines - Los Baños (UPLB).
For four days, participants examined the AUN-QA criteria and conducted a comprehensive analysis of its programme assessment process. They also explored the application of AUN-QA requirements to academic programmes. Furthermore, participants engaged in gap analyses to identify areas for overall academic improvement in their respective institutions.
In addition, the upcoming 16th AUN-QA Tier 2 Training is scheduled to take place onsite at the Industrial University of Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, from May 23 to 29, 2024. Dr. Cuevas is set to participate in this immersive six-day training course, demonstrating UPLB's commitment to maintaining educational excellence and upholding the quality standards mandated by the AUN.

UPLB Participates in 6th AUN-QA Tier 3 Assessor Training Workshop

As the ASEAN University Network-Quality Assurance (AUN-QA) continues to elevate the standards and quality of higher education, UPLB once again participated in its onsite operations through the 6th AUN-QA Programme Assessment Tier 3 Training Workshop held from March 19 to 22, 2024, in Bangkok, Thailand.
Participants from the university, including Dr. Myra G. Borines, UPLB Quality Assurance Office (QAO) Director, and Dr. Analyn L. Codilan, College of Forestry and Natural Resources (CFNR) QA Officer, completed the four-day training program to become AUN-QA practitioners.
This training course aimed to orient participants about the importance of regional and institutional quality assurance frameworks in providing quality education. Throughout the workshop, AUN-QA experts guided the participants in reviewing a Self-Assessment Report (SAR) and its requirements for institutional assessment. They also focused on integrating the criteria of the AUN-QA framework to enhance the academic quality of universities at an institutional level.

As part of the 378th ASEAN University Network-Quality Assurance (AUN-QA) Programme Assessment, UPLB undergraduate programs— BS Biology from the College of Arts and Sciences (CAS), BS Forestry under the College of Forestry and Natural Resources (CFNR), and BS Nutrition from College of Human Ecology (CHE)— underwent AUN-QA assessment over three days from March 12 to 14, 2024.

AUN-QA assessors, Mr. Prem Anand Arjunan from the Finance Accreditation Agency in Malaysia and Asst. Prof. Streerut Thadakant from Mahidol University in Thailand led the assessment for the BS Nutrition program.

Asst. Prof. Dr. Attachai Ueranantasun from Prince of Songkla University in Thailand and Dr. Nguyen Thi My Ngoc from Ton Duc Thang University in Vietnam evaluated the BS Biology program while Assoc. Prof. Watana Padgate from Naresuan University in Thailand and Prof. Bachtiar-Iskandar from Universitas Indonesia were the assigned assessors for the BS Forestry program. Both degree programs renewed their certification.

Throughout the three-day assessment, AUN-QA and UPLB actively participated in thorough evaluations, discussions, and reflections to recognize strengths and areas needing improvement, cultivating growth and ensuring quality in higher education.

The closing program began with the presentation of preliminary findings for each UPLB undergraduate degree program. Afterward, AUN-QA Chief Assessor Hanna Bachtiar-Iskandar led the wrap-up presentation for the UP programs. To officially conclude the assessment, lead assessor Mr. Prem Anand Arjunan and UP Assistant Vice President for Academic Affairs in Quality Assurance Dr. Alyssa M. Peleo-Alampay delivered their closing remarks.

Mr. Prem Anand Arjunan, in his speech, ensured that future AUN-QA activities will be returning onsite. He further added, “It also does not end at just returning to onsite; AUN-QA will strive for the continuation of improvement to provide the best possible services to all 179 member universities in our AUN-QA family.”

"UPLB's Commitment to Quality: Successful EQA Assessment Culminates in Undergraduate Degrees"

The University of the Philippines Los Baños (UPLB) Quality Assurance Office (QAO) proudly announces the successful completion of the External Quality Assurance (EQA) Types A & B Assessment of all its undergraduate degree programs. The first CU to subject all its undergraduate degree programs to EQA.

A series of orientation meetings started in July 2023, followed by the final preparation meetings in September. Actual Assessments were conducted from September 2023 to January 2024. The assessment was conducted based on the criteria and procedures outlined by the ASEAN University Network - Quality Assurance (AUN-QA). It involves a thorough evaluation, including a desktop assessment of the Self-Assessment Report (SAR), facility visits, and interviews with the stakeholders.

Another 3 degree programs of UPLB will be subjected to AUN-QA Assessment in March 2024, adding to the 10 degree programs with AUN-QA certifications.

The UPLB External Quality Assurance (EQA) Type A Assessment for BS Human Ecology was conducted on 23-25 January 2024. This marks the conclusion of evaluations for all 20 UPLB undergraduate degree programs.
Prof. Nina M. Cadiz, former QAO Director, and an AUN-QA Assessor, as well as Asst. Prof. Elgin V. San Gabriel from the Institute of Chemistry, College of Arts and Sciences, led as EQA assessors for the BS HE degree program. Key figures, including Dean Jennifer Marie S. Amparo, QAO Director Myra G. Borines, the SAR Team, and the CHE Executive Committee, attended the opening and closing ceremonies.
Post-EQA activities for the 22 undergraduate and graduate degree programs will be scheduled from April to December 2024, ushering in a new phase of UPLB's commitment to educational excellence and quality assurance

21 UPLB degree programs recognized for completing EQA assessments A total of 21 UPLB degree programs from seven colleges that have completed the External Quality Assurance (EQA) assessments were recognized on Dec. 12, 2023 by the UPLB Quality Assurance Office (QAO) on their 5th anniversary celebration. Degree programs that underwent EQA assessment were recognized during the EQA Awarding Ceremony. The QAO also recognized the assessors from the different colleges.

A total of 21 degree programs underwent EQA assessment from September to December 2023. These included programs from the College of Arts and Sciences, College of Development Communication, College of Economics and Management, College of Engineering and Agro-industrial Technology, College of Human Ecology, College of Forestry and Natural Resources, and College of Public Affairs and Development.

Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs Janette Silva, representing CJCJ, and Vice Chancellor Cereno joined them for the ceremony.

Vice Chancellor for Administration Rolando Bello and Human Resource Development Office (HRDO) Director Roderick Javar accepted the PRIME-HRM Maturity Level II recognition for two core systems, namely (1) Recruitment, Selection and Placement and (2) Rewards and Recognition.

The award was presented by Civil Service Commission-NCR Director Victoria Esber.

UPLB achieved PRIME HRM for two other core systems, Performance Management and Learning and Development, in August 2023.

UP still top PH university in 2024 Asia Rankings, 4 other universities enter list The University of the Philippines still ranked the highest among the country's universities in the 2024 QS Asia University Rankings, with four other universities entering the list for the first time.

The Bachelor of Science in Applied Physics is undergoing UPLB External Quality Assurance (EQA) Type A. The assessment will run until October 27. The UPLB Assessors for the degree program are Prof. Serlie B. Jamias and Prof. Jezie A. Acorda. Present during the first session are College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) Dean Prof. Maribel D. Sese, Associate Dean Assoc. Prof. Chrysline Margus N. Piñol, Institute of Mathematical Science and Physics (IMSP) Director Prof. Editha C. Jose, Physics Division Head Assoc. Prof. Ivy R. Colambo, and the SAR Team.

The Bachelor of Science in Mathematics, Bachelor of Science in Applied Mathematics, Master in Public Affairs, and Master of Science in Extension Education had undergone UPLB External Quality Assurance (EQA) Type A from October 16-19. The UPLB Assessors for the CAS degree programs are Assoc. Prof. Adeliza A. Dorado, Assoc. Prof. Jovencio A. Abalos, Assoc. Prof. Marion Lux Y. Castro, Assoc. Prof. Analyn A. Codilan. The UPLB Assessors for CPAf degree programs are Prof. Myra G. Borines (QAO Director) and Assoc. Prof. Rosemarie D. Eusebio.

The BA Communication Arts (BACA) and the BA Philosophy (BAPHLO) programs successfully completed the 2023 External Quality Assurance (EQA) Program Assessment held on 3-6 October 2023.

Assoc. Prof. Tonette P. Laude, PhD and Assoc. Prof. Ariel L. Babierra, PhD served as the degree programs’ assessors.

The UP EQA is based on the ASEAN University Network Quality Assurance (AUN-QA) framework and has six types. The BACA and BAPHLO programs underwent the Type A assessment.

The EQA Program Assessment plays a vital role in ensuring and enhancing the quality of both programs. It promotes transparency, accountability, and recognition, all of which are crucial for the development and competitiveness of higher education institutions in the ASEAN context.
