🌍✈️ ABACA-UPLB is proud to share ABARKADA Gio Rimas (Batch Sibol) and Arven Pasia’s (Batch Lukso) latest achievements in education! 🌟

Both Arven and Gio are set for incredible learning adventures in Indonesia. They will be participating in the Summer Course on Disaster Medicine at Universitas Diponegoro, Semarang, Indonesia 🇮🇩 from August 5-17, 2024, where they will gain valuable skills to better protect and advocate for children in disaster-prone areas.

Following this, they will attend the 7th IPB Nutrition Summer Course at IPB University, Bogor, Indonesia 🇮🇩 from August 26-30, 2024. 📚💼 Their participation will enhance their ability to promote children's health and nutritional rights.

Let's wish Arven and Gio safe skies ahead and a journey full of knowledge and growth. 🌟✨

Every July 25 marks the World Drowning Prevention Day to recognize drowning as a preventable public health concern and to raise knowledge on life-saving solutions in and around water.

Drowning is the process of experiencing suffocation due to submersion in liquid, usually water. It occurs silently, suddenly, and abruptly, thus, considered as the third leading cause of unintentional injury death worldwide [1].

Globally, 236,000 people died due to drowning [2] and in the country, the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) accounted for 3,576 deaths due to drowning in the year 2022 alone [2]. Children have a greater risk of drowning, especially if left unattended or unsupervised, which could lead to extreme injury or death.

Drowning prevention is essential to save lives. The World Health Organization identified some ways to prevent the occurrence of drowning. These include, learning to swim, supervising children, avoiding drinking alcohol near water, being aware of weather conditions, and using safety equipment.

Ngayong Ika-12 ng Hunyo, kasabay ng pagdiriwang ng Araw ng Kalayaan ay ang World Day Against Child Labor na naglalayong mapalawak ang kamalayan ukol sa tumataas na bilang at lumalalang isyu ng child labor.

Ang tema para sa taong 2024 ay "𝘽𝙖𝙬𝙖𝙩 𝘽𝙖𝙩𝙖, 𝙈𝙖𝙡𝙖𝙮𝙖: 𝙈𝙞𝙩𝙝𝙞𝙞𝙣 𝙣𝙜 𝙉𝙖𝙜𝙠𝙖𝙠𝙖𝙞𝙨𝙖𝙣𝙜 𝘽𝙖𝙣𝙨𝙖" na hango sa pandaigdigang tema na "Let’s act on our commitments: End Child Labor!" Ito ay isang panawagan na wakasan ang anumang uri ng child labor upang matupad ang mithiin na maging malaya ang bawat batang Pilipino.

Sa katunayan, patuloy ang pagtaas ng kaso ng child labor sa bansa. Noong 2022, tinatayang 1.48 milyong bata na mayroong edad 5 hanggang 17 ang biktima ng child labor [1]. Nakasasama sa pisikal at emosyonal na kalusugan ng bata ang maagang pakikilahok sa anumang uri ng trabaho. Inaagaw nito ang kanilang kamusmusan at nalilimitahan ang kanilang kalayaan at potensyal.

Ang ABACA-UPLB ay patuloy na isinusulong ang karapatan ng bawat bata, kabilang na ang ligal na proteksyon laban sa child labor. Kaisa ito sa pananawagan na bigyang-prayoridad ang mga isyung kinakaharap ng mga bata sa bansa, at gumawa ng karampatang hakbang upang mabigyang-tugon ang mga ito.

Para sa isang pamumuhay na malusog at protektado, natatamasa ang kanilang karapatang makapag-aral, at malayo mula sa karahasan at mapang-abusong trabaho. Sama-sama nating ipanawagan na wakasan ang child labor sa bansa!

On June 4th of every year, the 𝐈𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐧𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐃𝐚𝐲 𝐨𝐟 𝐈𝐧𝐧𝐨𝐜𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐂𝐡𝐢𝐥𝐝𝐫𝐞𝐧 𝐕𝐢𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐦𝐬 𝐨𝐟 𝐀𝐠𝐠𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧 is observed to raise awareness on children's rights and to recognize all children around the world who faced and suffered various forms of aggression, such as physical and emotional abuse [1].

According to the 2015 National Baseline Survey on Violence Against Children in the Philippines, 80% of Filipino children have experienced some form of violence at home, in school, in their community, and online [2]. As one of the most vulnerable members in the society, children are subjected to various forms of aggression, which causes traumatic experiences, robs their innocence, disrupts their development and well-being, and limits their potential.

Every child deserves to grow in a safe and secured environment, protected from fear and aggression. With this, 𝐀𝐁𝐀𝐂𝐀-𝐔𝐏𝐋𝐁 calls upon the government and policymakers in taking concrete actions to end any forms of violence against children as we continue to advocate for the protection and safety of children.

ABACA-UPLB celebrates ✨ ️by standing in solidarity with the LGBTQ+ community, especially its youth, who have been subjected to stigmatization, discrimination, hate speech, and violence. ✊🏻

In honor of the 1969 Stonewall Riots, Pride Month in June symbolizes the ongoing global fight for LGBTQ+ rights. It took four years for the American Psychiatric Association and two decades for the World Health Organization to declassify homosexuality as a mental illness, highlighting the long struggle for recognition and equality. Pride Month celebrates the achievements of LGBTQ individuals and continues the pursuit of civil rights and equal justice for all. 🙌🏻

Recently, lawmakers and school administrators in the Philippines have recognized that bullying of LGBTQ+ youth is a serious problem and designed interventions to address it. While efforts have been made to address these issues, there's still much work ahead in creating an inclusive and safe space for the LGBTQ+ community. Families, as one of the fundamental pillars of the society, can help in fighting against these stigma by being accepting and supportive to their children. 👨‍👩‍👧‍👦

The organization joins the fight to end all forms of injustices experienced by the LGBTQ+ community and continues to call for equal rights! As an organization upholding children’s rights, we continue to serve as a safe space for everyone. ✊️

In 2012, the United Nations General Assembly proclaimed every 1st day of June as Global Day of Parents to honor and appreciate all parents across the world for their sacrifices and commitment in rearing their children. 👨‍👩‍👧‍👦

This year's theme is "𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐦𝐢𝐬𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐏𝐥𝐚𝐲𝐟𝐮𝐥 𝐏𝐚𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠" — emphasizing the importance of parenting in strengthening the relationship between children and parents through different engaging activities for the family. 🫂

As the primary foundation of social organization, families, parents, and caregivers play a crucial role in providing a safe, nurturing, and engaging space where children can grow and develop to reach their full potential. 🙌🏻

Every 3rd day of May, World Press Freedom Day 🗞️ is celebrated to recognize the importance of freedom of expression in raising awareness about contemporary issues. This year's theme focuses on journalism's role in the current global environmental crisis [1] - acknowledging journalists 🖊️ as the frontline in delivering evidence-based information to the public.

The rise of mis/disinformation nowadays increases youth’s susceptibility to acquiring false information. 𝗘𝘅𝗽𝗼𝘀𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝘀𝗲 𝘁𝘆𝗽𝗲𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗶𝗻𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗮𝗳𝗳𝗲𝗰𝘁𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗰𝗵𝗶𝗹𝗱𝗿𝗲𝗻'𝘀 𝗰𝗼𝗴𝗻𝗶𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗱𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗹𝗼𝗽𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗻𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗶𝗿 𝘀𝗮𝗳𝗲𝘁𝘆 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗿𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁𝘀. Journalists have a crucial role in disseminating evidence-based information to the public and exposing stories that threaten human rights by providing a voice to the vulnerable, neglected, and disadvantaged population in society, including children [2]

We, in ABACA-UPLB, stand with our journalists in fighting against the spread of false information and upholding our right to information and freedom of expression.

𝐇𝐨𝐧𝐨𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐋𝐚𝐛𝐨𝐫, 𝐔𝐩𝐡𝐨𝐥𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐃𝐢𝐠𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐲 ✊🏻

Today, we celebrate Labor Day or “Araw ng mga Manggagawa” to honor the dedication and perseverance of Filipino workers across the globe and to recognize their significant role to our nation’s social development.

The Labor Code of the Philippines was enacted to protect the rights of workers. However, Filipino workers continue to face challenges such as high cost of living, low wages, contractualization, and labor rights violations.

Moreso, CALABARZON is one of the regions where the number of child labor cases in the country continues to rise. ln 2020, an estimated 45,000 minors in the region are engaged in labor [1]. Child labor affects the physical, mental, and emotional well-being of children, robs them of joyful and memorable childhood experiences, and limits their freedom to reach their full potential [2]

ABACA-UPLB advocates to end child labor and free children from any kind of abuse and exploitation. We also join the calls of our Filipino workers for decent work, equal opportunities, fair wages, and humane treatment.

Together, let's honor our workers with respect and continue to speak out against child labor! 🙌🏻
