OFFICIAL STATEMENT OF ANAKBAYAN CAS - UPLB ON THE SUSPENSION OF PEACE TALKS BY THE DUTERTE ADMINISTRATION

Anakbayan College of Arts and Sciences - UPLB expresses its utmost condemnation of Duterte's suspension of peace talks between the Government of the Republic of the Philippines (GRP) and the National Democratic Front (NDF). This move comes after the withdrawal from ceasefire by the New People's Army (NPA) in response to numerous attacks against the NPA being shamelessly committed by the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) despite the presence of ceasefire and peace talks, along with Duterte's refusal to fulfill his campaign promise of releasing 400 political prisoners unjustly prosecuted in previous administrations. These simply show how unserious the Duterte administration is in pursuing peace in the country and—by suspending the peace talks—in addressing the roots of armed conflict.

Genuine peace comes hand in hand with justice. Armed conflict is only the result of several injustices that prevail in the Philippines such as the state's many violations of human rights, its refusal to give poor Filipinos opportunities for sufficient livelihood in favor of capitalists and imperialist powers, or its disregard for the basic social needs of citizens like health and education. As such, it is only when these injustices are halted that genuine peace can prosper in our land, and peace talks are a venue for discussing this. Apparently, however, Duterte does not understand this, as he says he finds no "compelling reason" to continue with the peace talks. Workers suffer from low wages, contractualization, and unjust working conditions. Tuition fees are ever-increasing, preventing millions of students from acquiring formal education. Peasants are killed on the ground they till, as indigenous peoples are forced to leave their homelands. All these injustices, yet Duterte still cannot comprehend what peace talks are for.

With this, we say that Duterte is no different from previous Philippine presidents; all of them are willing to forsake peace just so they can serve the interest of themselves and the ruling class. This calls for even greater militancy from the masses, especially the Filipino youth, in standing up against this oppressive state and fighting for the peace being continually denied to us!

JOIN THE MOB TODAY | JAN 24, 2:30PM, HUM STEPS

It has come to public attention that UP President Alfredo E. Pascual (PAEP), mastermind of SAIS, eUP, and many other anti-student programs and policies, will be in UPLB today for a tribute to his name. The shameless tribute, planned by the administration to supposedly honor him as his term as UP President nears its end, will be held at 4pm at DL Umali Auditorium. The mere existence of a tribute to PAEP is a huge insult to thousands of UP students who have suffered under his administration, more so when it is held in UPLB which abounds with memories of students staying in the campus even after midnight just to acquire slots, students being barred from enrollment by financial inadequacies and absence of slots, and students having to face dubious school fees—all because of PAEP's SAIS. We also take into account how this garbage of a program called SAIS and its mother project eUP, collectively (and corruptly) cost billions worth of the people's money despite their uselessness to technically anyone but the private corporations who benefited from their purchase. Moreover, PAEP has also masterminded the rampant commercialization and privatization of various UP units, selling off university property to wealthy business people. He is also behind the approval of the GE reform, the academic calendar shift, and other colonialized university programs which betray the orientation of UP as a national university which upholds the interests of the Filipino masses, not the desires of foreign nations.

With this, we call on everyone to join the protest action today, starting 2:30pm at Humanities Steps, where we will make sure that PAEP does not easily enter and leave UPLB without facing the studentry which he subjected to oppression.

YOU ARE NOT WELCOME IN UPLB, PAEP!

OFFICIAL STATEMENT OF ANAKBAYAN CA-UPLB ON THE 30th ANNIVERSARY OF THE MENDIOLA MASSACRE

Thirty years ago today, thousands of peasants were violently dispersed with gunfire which took the lives of 13 farmers and injured hundreds. Thirty years later, justice has not yet been served for the martyred victims of the said incident now known as the Mendiola Massacre. At present, non-stop abuses are still inflicted on thousands of farmers nationwide including the continuing violence in Hacienda Luisita and Lapanday Food Corp., to name a few.

Anakbayan CA-UPLB calls on the Duterte Administration to finally attend to the thirty-year cry for justice for the victims of the infamous tragedy and hold the landlords such as the Conjuangco-Aquinos and other landlord-serving constituents accountable.

We also urge the GRP and NDFP panels to carefully tackle in the ongoing third round of Peace Talks all the important drafts on the Comprehensive Agreement on Social and Economic Reforms (CASER) which covers genuine agrarian reform and development.

JUSTICE FOR THE VICTIMS OF THE MENDIOLA MASSACRE!
GENUINE AGRARIAN REFORM NOW!

OFFICIAL STATEMENT OF ANAKBAYAN-UPLB ON THE VIOLENT DISPERSAL OF MCC-MSI WORKERS ON STRIKE IN CANLUBANG, CALAMBA

Anakbayan-UPLB strongly condemns today's violent dispersal of the contractual workers on strike from the Manila Cordage Company (MCC) and the Manco Synthethics, Incorporated (MSI) in Carmelray, Canlubang at Calamba. The Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) has long issued an order that the workers be given back their jobs and regularized, only to be ignored by the capitalist behind the companies. The workers have been on strike for eight months now, staying inside the MCC-MSI plantation and paralyzing production.

We also express our militant support to the workers of MCC and MSI who have managed to keep hold of the plantation despite the dispersal and continue their battle against contractualization, unjust wages, absence of benefits, and inhumane working conditions. Our support extends to all other workers in the country who bear the same fight. Moreover, we demand that the MCC-MSI management be held accountable for disregarding DOLE's order and for their continued fascism towards the workers.

Anakbayan-UPLB is proud of its member Paul Jhon Diezon for being one of the 2016 Ten Outstanding Jose Rizal Model Students of the Philippines! Padayon, kapatid! Patuloy na paglingkuran ang sambayanan!

“I must say that my experience of living in the communities and going to the streets, organizing protests and mobilizing students to fight for their rights has transformed me to become more passionate and driven. Those experiences with the masses made me believe that our 1.0’s or 1.25’s won’t feed the hungry; they won’t give the farmers their land nor give justice to those workers who are experiencing contractualization."

SALUBONG SA BAGONG TAON
Illustrated by Regine Vasquez of SIKHAY, cultural arm of Anakbayan-UPLB

As the skies light up with the coming of 2017, thousands of Filipino families grieve for loved ones who are deprived of another tomorrow. An innocent person lies dead on the road, a cardboard on his body replacing what should have been due process. In another town, a six-year-old girl gets shot to death in the car of her father who is suspected of drug abuse. All in the name of a misdirected war on drugs. In the countryside, a peasant leader, whose only wish is for farmers to be able to freely till their land and eat enough, is killed by goons hired by a wealth-driven family. Murdered in the same manner are workers and students and indigenous people fighting only for a dignified future. Thousands more are dying, stripped of basic social rights like healthcare, education, and livelihood.

Thus, it is needless to say that as the skies light up with the coming of 2017, our fight for the respect of human rights intensifies. Let the new year be a stronger year of calling for the end of killings done in the name of "change" or greed or outright desire for violence. This coming year, we continue to call on the government to rechannel its efforts into addressing the actual root of substance abuse and criminality: poverty as a result of inaccessibility to basic social services. We also call on the government to act on why Filipinos fight and protest in the first place, that is, that the masses continue to suffer while families and individuals from the ruling class get richer and more powerful by the minute, as corrupt and fascist state officials are freed from prosecution and a murderous dictator is given a hero's burial.

This 2017, we fight for all who have been unjustly deprived of life and liberty, and we fight even stronger.
