ILLE IMPERIUM, a solo art exhibition by Paul Hilario at the NCCA Gallery from 6 to 31 July 2024. Curated by Laya Boquiren.

“ Art of Paul Hilario's solo exhibition offers a satirical exploration of a nation in decline. His visual allegories are thought-provoking meditations on the state and its governance. The artist prefers to wage his battles through symbols, which are enigmatic provocations that elicit contested responses from different people. The narrative of an ailing government echoes through our collective memory, a stark and urgent reminder of the cyclical pattern of inequity, violence, and patronage politics. Despite sporadic reform efforts, deep-rooted corruption remains a complex issue, perpetuated by oligarchic dynasties and economic disparity. The urgency of these societal issues is palpable in Hilario's artworks, compelling us to act immediately. A just and humane society may seem like a fragile dream, but it is within our collective power to transform it into a tangible reality. Civil society movements, grassroots initiatives, and the unwavering determination of individuals are the beacons of hope on the long and arduous path toward recovery, reminding us of the potential for much-needed healing.”

Paul graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Biology, Majoring in Microbiology, from the University of the Philippines Los Baños. He was the curator of the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) Riceworld Museum (an ethnographic and science museum). His artistic interest started at a young age and was further stirred when he became one of the founding members of MakiSining. Paul considers himself largely self-taught, yet he was mentored early in his professional art career by Marcel Antonio, one of the Philippines' most respected artists. Since then, Paul has had various group and solo exhibitions to his credit. In addition to the Philippines, Paul’s works have traveled to countries such as Australia, Canada, Dubai, Germany, Italy, Japan, Malaysia, Mexico, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Singapore, Switzerland, the UK, and the USA, among a growing list.

The exhibition will feature fourteen paintings and two installations, each bearing Hilario's unique approach to figuration and palette.

Admission is free and open to the public. Please contact [email protected] or The Art of Paul Hilario for more information. Visit the NCCA Gallery from Mondays through Sundays, 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM.

Tara! 🙂

ABOUT THE ARTWORK

As Stephen King said, "Some birds are not meant to be caged, that's all. Their feathers are too bright, their songs too sweet and wild."

These birds carry songs with melodies both enchanting and untamed. Their voices possess an authenticity that resounds with the chords of truth, unrestrained by the shackles of conformity.

May we find the courage to let our feathers shine and our songs resonate with the wildness of our souls.

-------------
ABOUT THE ARTIST

James Arnoza pursued his undergraduate studies in biology and majored in microbiology at the University of the Philippines Los Baños. He was born on January 30, 2001 in Cebu City, Cebu and is currently residing in Pandi, Bulacan. His research interests include food microbiology, lactic acid bacteria, and conservation biology. James aspires to pursue further studies in the field of conservation biology, specializing in areas such as conservation medicine and the role of wildlife in the transmission of zoonotic pathogens.

James actively engages in various creative pursuits beyond his microbiology work. In his spare time, he immerses himself in the world of freelance digital illustration and graphic design, showcasing his artistic talents and honing his skills. Recently, however, he stumbled upon a new artistic avenue that captivated him - acrylics. The tactile nature and vibrant colors of this medium have unleashed a newfound passion within him. Drawing inspiration from renowned artists such as Peter Mohrbacher, Marco Bucci, and Alberto Mielgo, James has embraced the world of concept art and digital painting, allowing his imagination to take flight on the canvas. Their distinct styles and innovative approaches have served as catalysts for his own artistic growth, propelling him to experiment with unique techniques and push the boundaries of his creativity. Through his artistic endeavors, James seeks to bring his imaginative visions to life, capturing the essence of his subjects and evoking emotions in those who view his work.

He is an alumnus, former Arts Committee Head and former Director of the UP Painters’ Club and is also an alumnus of the UPLB Zoological Society.

ABOUT THE ARTWORKS

This was MMXXI or 2021 - a pandemic year. The man in red blowing bubbles through a star shaped bubble wand is China. COVID-19 is transmitted via our saliva or water droplets from our breath. The bubbles contain the virus and spread all over the world.
The sleeping woman is the world. She sleeps because all the activities in the world slowed down during the pandemic. When a bubble touches an unprotected part of her body, a white flower grows. In her other body parts, where it is protected by her shirt, no white flower grows. This symbolizes death. Many people died, especially those who were vulnerable.

Some of the bubbles burst upon coming close to the sun in the background. This pertains to the release of the vaccines that help contain the spread of covid.

The worried man next to China are other world leaders who found it hard to contain the virus and keep their economies afloat.
China holds a walking stick--seemingly blind to their role as the original source of the virus. They refuse to acknowledge their fault that resulted to the hardships that people endured and millions of deaths all across the globe. Until today, they have not issued an apology over covid. No reparations to other countries have been done. They do not see their fault.

-------------
ABOUT THE ARTIST

Born and raised in Los Baños, Laguna, Paul graduated from UPLB with a degree in BS Biology, majoring in Microbiology. He was once the curator of the IRRI rice museum before becoming a full-time artist. Highly motivated and influenced in his work environment while employed, rice became his biggest inspiration when he painted part-time in the beginning.

Today he relishes painting visual narratives and tries to create stories with themes that range from the blissful to the brooding. Paul's art compositions are usually laden with common and personal symbolism. His works seem to have disconnected elements but they are in fact linked in the way that he sees them.

Paul doesn’t confine himself in a box. Some days he paints social commentaries. On other days he paints his personal observations of issues that pertain to almost anything under the sun - these can be political, social, environmental, religious, cultural, and even agricultural. Paul tries to paint realities in, out, and of life.

Aside from the Philippines, Paul’s works have found their way to Australia, Canada, Denmark, Dubai, Germany, Italy, Japan, Malaysia, Mexico, Netherlands, New Zealand, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, Switzerland, the UK, and the USA.

Paul was recently a finalist at the High Art International Art Competition 2023.
