In an effort to continually elevate the quality of instruction, Sacred Heart College's Basic Education Department and Higher Education Department faculty convened for a seminar on Friday, September 15 at the SLM Building. The focus of the seminar was to explore the utilization of Multidimensional Assessment Tools (MDAT) in the educational process.
The session commenced with the setting of clear objectives for the day, followed by a pre-test that proved to be a thought-provoking challenge for the faculty members. Subsequently, an engaging activity was introduced, facilitated by a process of analysis and abstraction. Faculty members actively participated by answering the speaker's prepared questions.
Dr. Juanito A. Merle, Supervising Education Program Specialist for Planning and Research, DepEd Quezon leading the seminar, introduced "Project LAMP," which stands for Learning Assurance for Monitoring and Progress. This initiative is a concrete response from the Department of Education (DepEd) CALABARZON to the central office's directive to revisit and enhance assessment tools to improve learners' performance. The seminar placed a significant emphasis on the meanings of Multidimensional Assessment of Learning and Authentic Assessment.
Dr. Merle delved into the four dimensions essential in the preparation of Multidimensional Assessment, as prescribed by the Regional Office. Firstly, the contextual dimension encompassed personal, local, national, and global perspectives, involving activities that engage learners. Secondly, the cognitive dimension included aspects like remembering, understanding, applying, analyzing, evaluating, and creating. Dr. Merle elaborated on verbs associated with levels of cognitive behavior, differentiating Lower Order Thinking Skills (LOTS) from Higher Order Thinking Skills (HOTS) questions.
The third dimension, the knowledge dimension, comprised factual, conceptual, procedural, and metacognitive aspects, with an exploration of how the revised Bloom's Taxonomy influences test results. Dr. Merle also addressed the assessment focus in the 21st century, shifting from skills in acquiring to skills in producing.
The fourth dimension, the SOLO framework by Collis and Biggs, highlighted five ways to answer questions: pre-structural, uni-structural, multi-structural, relational, and extended abstract. This framework was seen as significant in framing test questions, with examples given on structuring responses in multiple-choice items.
Furthermore, Dr. Merle emphasized the importance of 21st-century skills, including critical thinking, communication skills, creativity, problem-solving, collaboration, and more. These skills were incorporated into the preparation of assessment items, focusing on thinking, literacy, communication, and numeracy skills.
Dr. Merle underscored the need to target knowledge, skills, and values in effective instruction and presented the Senior High School (SHS) core subjects. Rules in item writing, examples of multidimensional assessment items in various subjects, and regional training reminders were shared, demonstrating practical applications
The seminar concluded with a post-test to assess participants' comprehension of the day's insights.
The event was expertly hosted by Ms. Milagros Arida and Mr. Adrian Reglos, with Ms. Hazel San Gil leading the opening prayer and Ms. Marisel Sante leading the singing of the Philippine National Anthem. The energizer session was conducted by Ms. Jennifer Baldovino. SHC President Sr. Maria Luisa B. Javier, DC., delivered the welcome remarks, followed by an overview of the seminar by Dr. Maria Zorayda A. Torres. The introduction of the keynote speaker was done by Mr. Eduard Mancilla.
A lively question and answer session was facilitated by Dr. Helen E. Tolete, followed by a wrap-up activity conducted by Ms. Jennifer Malelang. The program concluded with closing remarks by Dr. Maria Lucila M. Baroro and a closing prayer led by Mr. Rey C. Rodil.
This seminar marks a significant step in Sacred Heart College's commitment to enhancing the quality of education and equipping its faculty with innovative assessment tools for the benefit of its students.
