"Heart of commerce"

Originally called Calle Magallanes, this was one of the earliest streets built by the Spanish colonizers in the city. Named after Ferdinand Magellan (also known as Fernando Magallanes), the Portuguese explorer who discovered the Philippines, this was the center of the business district in the late 19th century when the island rose to prosperity with the reopening of its port to world trade.

Today, it is a busy thoroughfare in the heart of downtown Cebu where the historic Magellan's Cross and Basilica Minore del Santo Niño are located. City Hall also lies along this street.

Ang Pagkubkob (Siege) ng Baler ay nagsimula noong ika-1 Hulyo 1898. Labinlimang araw matapos ang proklamasyon ng Kalayaan ng Pilipinas. Pinalibutan ng mga rebolusyonaryong Pilipino ang bayan at napilitang magkuta sa simbahan ang mga sundalong Kastila.

Matapos ang paulit-ulit na paliwanag ng mga Pilipino na tapos na ang digmaan, hindi naniwala ang mga Espanyol at umabot ng labing-isang buwan ang kanilang pamamalagi sa simbahan. Sa huli, sumuko nang mapayapa ang mga Espanyol sa Baler noong ika-2 ng Hunyo, 1899 dahil sa kautusan ni Presidente Emilio Aguinaldo na ituring sila bilang mga kaibigan.

Sa pamamagitan ng Republic Act No. 9187 nabuo ang Philippine-Spanish Friendship Day tuwing ika-30 ng Hunyo, bilang paalala ng pagpapatawad ng mga PIlipino sa kanilang mga kaaway.

Noong Ika-23 ng Disyembre 1898, lumikas ang mga Espanyol patungong Surigao dahil sa matagumpay na paghihimagsik ng mga Katipunerong Pilipino mula Luzon hanggang Visayas. Tatlong araw matapos nito, iwinagayway ang watawat ng Pilipinas sa Casa Real ng Surigao, ang nagsilbing tahanan ng pamahalaan doon. Tinuring ito bilang unang pagkakataon ng pagwagayway ng watawat ng Pilipinas sa rehiyon ng Mindanao.
