Publications, articles and videos on soy and breast cancer

I have always been asked how to deal with doctors and healthcare practitioners who prohibit the consumption of soy products and continue to perpetuate the debunked myth that soy increases breast cancer risk.

I have compiled a list of peer-reviewed publications from major journals (Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA), British Journal of Cancer, Journal of the National Cancer Institute, Journal of Nutrition and American Journal of Clinical Nutrition) that report on the results of the most recent human clinical trials on the effect of soy consumption on breast cancer risk.

I have also included peer-reviewed publications on the effect of the lunasin soy peptide on breast cancer cells and metastasis.

Also on the list are news media articles and videos on the safety of soy and its preventive effects on breast cancer.

A lot of medical and naturopathic doctors are grossly misinformed and uneducated on this topic. If doctors insist that soy consumption is bad because it promotes breast cancer, I suggest to ask them to provide you with any peer-reviewed publications, articles and human clinical results that support their contention and contradict these recent human clinical trials. If they can’t, then they should be told that they are wrong and maybe doing more harm to their patients by perpetuating the myth that soy causes human breast cancer and is bad for breast cancer survivors.

Lunasin improves the bad cholesterol lowering efficacy of statins

Statin drugs are the most prescribed medications to lower bad (LDL) cholesterol levels in the blood by inhibiting HMG CoA reductase, the rate-limiting enzyme for cholesterol biosynthesis. However, statin’s cholesterol-lowering effect is reduced by the upregulation of PCSK9 expression, a gene involved in degrading LDL receptors in liver cells. Thus, the need to ingest higher doses of statins to lower cholesterol which can lead to severe side effects.

This recent study shows that the addition of lunasin improves the efficacy of statin drugs in lowering bad cholesterol, in part by downregulating the expression of PCSK9 and increasing the number of LDL receptors in liver cells to reduce plasma concentrations of total and LDL cholesterol.

If there are still doubters out there about the legitimacy of the epigenetics revolution, take a look at this chart showing the number of research publications on epigenetics in comparison to the genetic cause of chronic diseases from 2000 to 2018.

In 2000, when the human genome sequencing project was just completed, there were 10 times more publications about finding the genetic cause of chronic diseases than epigenetics. By 2018, publications on epigenetics which started growing exponentially in 2009, were 12.6 times more than genetic cause of chronic diseases.

What caused this dramatic shift in research the past nine years? It was the realization among biomedical research scientists that the promised cure for chronic diseases upon completion of the human genome sequencing project was based on a flawed scientific paradigm that most age-related chronic diseases are caused by DNA mutations and defective genes. How can the gene-disease paradigm be the foundation of biomedical research and drug development when only 2% of the whole human genome encode protein-coding genes, and the switches that regulate gene expression are found NOT on genes, but on the epigenome (packaging of DNA) and the non-protein-coding ‘junk DNA’?

Advances in epigenetic research are now showing that the underlying cause of aging and most chronic diseases is the dysregulation of epigenomes, corrupting the epigenetic switches that regulate gene expression. It has become more apparent from these studies that controlling these epigenetic switches is the key to finding cures and reversals of age-related chronic diseases.

No matter how much the medical community, pharmaceutical companies and proponents of genetic determinism try to ignore and oppose epigenetics, it is now undeniable.
