Indigenizing the Intellectual Property System On August 9, we once again observe the International Day of the World's Indigenous Peoples. There are many threats to the rich cultures of our indigenous populations. Included in these overlooked issues is the lack of protection given to the intellectual property (IP) of indigenous peoples.

The article of Atty. Mario Jr Cerilles was recently published in the Ateneo Law Journal’s issue on “Developments in Criminal Law”.
In his article entitled, “Overcoming Obstacles to the Quest for Genuine Accountability for Drug-Related EJKs in the Philippines”, Mario analyzes the weaknesses of the country’s legal framework on the investigation and prosecution of EJKs, and suggests concrete ways to exact genuine accountability for the victims of the drug war.

The Second Issue of the Ateneo Law Journal’s 65th Volume is now available online.
The Issue, with the theme "Developments in Criminal Law", presents a selection of scholarly work anchored on the evolution of criminal law, both in its national and international iterations, as well as in its interactions with various areas of law.
Included in the Issue is the Article “Overcoming Obstacles to the Quest for Genuine Accountability for Drug-Related EJKs in the Philippines” by Atty. Mario Cerilles, Jr., which provides an examination of the current landscape regarding extrajudicial killings and submits potential points for its improvement. The Article analyzes the existing legal framework on extrajudicial killings, examines the structure of government agencies that are mandated to investigate and prosecute these crimes, and observes the efforts of the international community to raise awareness and to bring to justice the responsible actors and officials.
The Issue also contains the Article “The Transplantation of the Trans “Panic” Defense in the Philippines as a Consequence of People v. Pemberton” by Atty. Christine Faith M. Tango and Mr. Juan Paolo M. Artiaga, delves into the concept of the trans “panic” defense and the implications of its transplantation in the Philippine legal landscape.

Their study, entitled, “Analysing the Interplay Between the Right to Health and Pharmaceutical Patent Rights in the Introduction of a COVID-19 Vaccine into the Philippines” discusses the intellectual property issues that hound the entry of COVID-19 vaccines into the country.
