Adult acne is one the most common reasons patients come to see us in our virtual and face-to-face clinics.

Two years ago, I had a bout of bad acne myself. I was at a period of intense adjustment plus I was reviewing for my boards. So many things were happening in my life and acne was getting in the way. (Or was my body’s response to all those events.)

I simplified and restarted my regimen and rediscovered the ☠️ purging and 🐥 ugly duckling stage of retinoids.

Aside from this rediscovery, I also got to experience firsthand the negative emotional impacts of having . I blamed and beat myself up for using so many cosmetics, for the food I ate, for not working out enough, etc. I felt like a failure 😩 being a and not having control of my skin at that time.

The experience helped me put things into perspective — playing both patient and doctor in — and I believe it has helped me become more empathic and toward patients, friends, and family struggling with it.

Dentists Are Seeing an Epidemic of Cracked Teeth. What’s Going On? When I reopened my dental practice in early June, the tooth fractures started coming in: at least one a day, every single day that I’ve been in the office.

Two statements to sum up important factors in treating Asian skin (and skin of color) with lasers—
1️⃣ Asian skin is DIVERSE.
Treating skin means treating a wide range of skin tones and phototypes from Fitzpatrick type 3 to type 5 (some type 6).
2️⃣ Asian skin is DELICATE.
The mechanisms that protect against UV radiation are the same mechanisms that make us more prone to (hyper- and hypopigmentation) after inflammation.

These are important considerations in choosing the appropriate laser and treatment settings to ❗️prevent complications ❗️or to lessen their degree should they arise.

Pigment lasers target 🎯 melanin 🎯 at varying depths in the skin, depending on the condition to be treated. Different wavelengths have different depths of pe*******on (e.g., 532 nm for superficial pigment vs. 1064 nm for deeper pigment in the dermis). For in general, we do our best to avoid unnecessary epidermal absorption because it could lead to burns and/or disrupt the pigment in the basal layer as a complication.

In getting treatment for pigmented lesions, it’s important that your provider is knowledgeable on:
❇️ the skin condition being treated
❇️ whether the condition is worth treating with a laser (or if there are better options)
❇️ the appropriate laser and settings to be used
❇️ possible complications of treating that condition with a laser and, importantly,
❇️ how to manage complications that may arise

🔎 If you have concerns, see a board-certified and ask about possible treatment options.

In 2018, there were an estimated 18 million individuals with cancer around the world. It’s not uncommon that someone we know or someone dear to us had/has it. We’re currently seeing a displacement of care for cancer patients as our hospitals continue to fill up worldwide during this . These patients and their families are undergoing a lot of stress and uncertainty during these times. I thought of putting this together, 1️⃣ as I remember someone suggesting this before in a poll and 2️⃣ it’s timely to re-emphasize the need for self-care for these patients especially now.
