Have nothing to do with Idols

Do you have an idol? A god you worship?

I have. I may not be bowing to a golden calf, an image or any form of nature but I have bowed down to a non-obvious god.

I thought I'd not fall in this trap but I did.

One pastor said that whatever makes us angry when that thing is taken away is definitely our idol. But I still remember him saying that anything that takes the place of God in our lives is our idol.

God caused everything to free me from idolatry that I had been keeping in my heart for years. Today , as I write this reflection, I hope that anyone reading would be able to identify their idol or idols and break it /them down.

This realization of my idolatry has been exposed after my resignation from an almost-seven years job in the public teaching profession. Please don't get me wrong. I loved teaching. I still love and will forever love. However, I have loved it so much that it became my life. I was married to it and locked my life around it to the point of dropping myself to sickness. I know many of you would choose to work to the extreme for the sake of excellence. I am on the excellence side. God delights in diligence and hard work. But the question is, is it possible that you and I are carving an image of ourselves that somehow we worship this work of our hands?

Isaiah 2:8 speaks about God's chosen people whose land is full of idols; bowing down to the work of their hands, to what their fingers have made.

I know I have been carving out an image for myself that I was beginning to worship. As I began working in public school, I never said no to responsibilities. There was a point being that I took three designations. Yeah, right. Three guys, three. Fellow teachers in the public school in the Philippines, how would you feel about that. Being an adviser was already a handful but to add it with three, Oh men, I don't want to be single!

Again, there is nothing wrong with having responsibilities and advancing in my chosen career. It only means that I was trustworthy and responsible. But how did it became my idol?

Only when it was taken or removed from me that I finally realized how big such a part of it in my identity as a person. How I felt when I was not a teacher in the public school was the "ting" of my idolatry.

Just a few days of staying home and making myself busy with some writing, I felt such a failure. A what? Yes. I was grasping for the "teacher-image" with a lifetime job security and social relevance. I felt nothing less apart from doing my profession. I felt so stripped-off with my identity. Just like a grown plant moved to a new ground, I felt withered and dying (with exaggeration). Which I think is normal for people who suddenly lost a job. (It was my choice by the way.) Now I can relate with career oriented women who gave up their "heights-of-career" to be a full-time home maker. I came to a point of asking what wrong did I do with my life.

Have you ever poured out your time and devotion to something that you never thought how your life would be without it?

However, God is not done with me yet. During the mid-year prayer and fasting in our church, God confronted me with this idol. Is He really enough for me or do I add something (career, relationship, money, family) to Jesus equals who I really am? Turned out the latter. There was this feeling that I would be happier if I have these and that. I was reminded that in Jesus I am complete ( Colossians 2:10). I was reminded that I was building a self-image for myself all those years.

What came with this idol is pride. I remember proudly saying that with all my experiences and degree, I could easily get a job. I said it without regard to all that God has done in my life. That He was the One who gave and qualified me to be where I am today. What a proud heart!

God in His mercy forgave me. Soon after, He led me to a part-time job where I could say that if not because of Him, I wouldn't qualify. I shall share how He worked miraculously in my current job next time.

This I learned from this period in my life. God is after my heart and my character than my success in career. He who began a good work in me shall change me day by day until I reflect the image of His Son Jesus. I am far from perfection. Really. But God desires my whole heart and being because He is holy. He doesn't want any god beside Him in my life. He crushes down idols even if it pains me.

Paul is a great example. In Philippians 3:8 he said, " What is more, I consider everything a loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord, for whose sake I have lost all things. I consider them garbage, that I may gain Christ".

I considered everything that has happened in my life and the decisions I made through His guidance are for my heart to be wholeheartedly devoted to Him. God does not see me according to my profession or the work that I did for Him but to what Christ did on the cross. He saved me, freed me from the bo***ge of sin, gave me freedom to serve Him and do the work He has prepared for me.

Finally, it is not career that has become my god but myself. I tried to create it with my own hands and worshiped.

I am thankful to God that He allowed me to go through this only to find Him being with me all along. Never leaving me nor forsaking me. He stood beside me in my sin and remained faithful.

So, how about you, is it possible that you have a god beside the Lord?

Have you lost your identity over a dream, family, hobby, and possessions? If you feel nothing is left, then I may suggest in Jesus you are complete.

DOES GOD CARE ABOUT MY PIMPLES? 25/06/2019

Singles, We Need to Multiply 18/06/2019

There's a reason why singles should multiply.

Singles, We Need to Multiply  “I am afraid of the kind of the world my children would be in if I were to marry. If I would be single in this lifetime, it would be okay with me,” Ariane, one of my bffs told me over meryend…

13/06/2019

You are altogether beautiful, my darling; there is no flaw in you.

I read a book gifted to me by a dear friend about how to shift our views from what the world teaches us about being “Single” to what God “our Creator” defines it. I caught myself smiling with what Ptr. Dave Cutar, the author, said about loving yourself first before being able to love others.

He wrote,
“Maaring hindi ikaw ang pinakamaganda o pinaka guwapong tao sa mundo, pero merong darating sa buhay mo na para sa kanila, ikaw ang mundo. Maaring matagalan ka sa paghahanap pero meron ‘yan! Wag ka lang mainip.”

Like me and other single ladies who are waiting for Mr. Right, or even men searching for their future wife, that “Meron yan! statement is like message from an angel.” That’s just good news! You, mean Pastor, there’s really one for me? Someone who’ll fall for me head over heels? I can’t wait!

What makes me feel so elated about it? Why would men and women feel hopeful about waiting for that One? Truth is, everyone wants to have someone, just one is enough, to overlook our flaws and make us feel beautiful or handsome like no other.
We all want to have someone telling us that, “You are altogether beautiful my (Babe, Baby, Honey, Sweetheart, Sweetie Pie); there is no flaw in you.”

Ehhhhh…Will that ever be possible?

Many times, our sense of beauty is dependent on how others view us. We want affirmation from others about how we look and dress. We want our impression to always be pleasing to everybody. That’s why we exercise, we choose our outfit well, and we would try different diets, body enhancers, skin regimens and even try the latest technology on becoming more attractive.

We also have to consider what other’s think about how we look. Their comments are valid, as long as he/she is a really good and concerned friend. But, being so conscious of what others may think may not be beneficial because we could fall into the trap of pleasing people.

“You are more than your color, looks, weight, or height!” wrote Ptr. Cutar. Is there a “Beauty Regulatory Commission?” he added.

Right, in this scenario, beauty is really in the eyes of the beholder. Nevertheless, what matters is he who beholds should have the right view of beauty.

Let me bring you back to the Garden of Eden when the first Man and Woman were not aware that they were naked. They were perfect, flawless, stunning, and beautiful until they disobeyed God. They started to look at each other and saw their nakedness. They felt shame. They needed to cover themselves and they made use of leaves.

Similar to what we are today, we feel ugly, insufficient and shame, therefore we cover ourselves with cosmetics, surgeries and we chase the latest technologies to enhance our beauty. We crave for compliments over our posts on social media.

When we pose on social media who do we really want to convince that we are beautiful, others or ourselves? (paraphrased from the book)

Not until we gaze our look to the One who can really say that we are altogether beautiful and flawless. To the only One who have woven us in our mother’s womb, who knows us by name and can count every hair we have all over our body. He alone proved that we are worth it because He’s given His life so we can have a total transformation. To the One who can cover our nakedness and shame because He himself made us.

Oh how marvelous it is to think that someone can accept our flaws not because we are lovable, but because He is love. He can never love us more or less.
Beauty is in the eyes of the beholder. The One I am referring to is Jesus. In Him we are complete. Col. 2:9-10

Product Description

More than 100 years ago, Aussie doctor Thomas Lucas started making homeopathic remedies using the antibacterial, antimicrobial papaw fruit (aka Carica papaya)—this is one of his original products. It can do almost anything, from protecting skin against the elements and healing chapped lips and cuticles to diminishing blemishes and relieving eczema. And it’s also beloved by makeup artists, who keep a tube in their kits to use as a subtle highlighter or to add sheen lashes and brows.

In an interview with Brisbane Times, Kevin Talbot, fourth-generation Lucas manufacturer, said, “Lucas’ Papaw has more than a cult following now; everyone wants it.” Rose Byrne, Miranda Kerr, and Cate Blanchett all swear by it. “It just works,” said Talbot.

The ingredients include fermented papaw fruit and pharmaceutical-grade petroleum (a milder and non-comedogenic form of the petroleum found in, say, Vaseline). The consistency is similar to most petroleum products, with a slightly milky smell that’s not at all unpleasant.
