A Tribute to Tito Erwin

Hello everyone! I am here to celebrate the life of my Uncle Erwin Lambrento or as I call him “Tito.”

My Tito was an incredible man and was a father to me. He was loved dearly by his wife Tita Au, as well as his son Sigmund and daughter Cara. He was also adored by his parents Tatay Macario and Nanay Dominga and his siblings, Emelita, Editha and Edna.

He was born in Philippines on 09/30/1961, His childhood is best described as humble and full of challenges and hard work. At an early age, he recognized the importance of education in his life, thus he put his focus on his education and he succeeded by graduating as a physician. As a doctor in Philippines, he served a lot of sick people in the hospital and in the community. He happily and generously gave his professional services for free to his community. Prior to migrating to the US to join his wife Tita Au, he also studied to become a registered nurse.

My Tito was appreciated by his family, parents, friends, and colleagues. He was fun-loving and a very cool “Tito.” His commitment to his profession and to helping people as doctor and a nurse was outstanding. During the Covid-19 crisis, he was brave and heroic. During the peak of the crisis, he was on the frontlines, caring and saving lives. At the time, everyone was scared to be in close proximity to another human being, he was trying so desperately to save lives and comfort families. Unfortunately, he contracted Covid-19. For more than a month, he gave his best fight against the virus and desperately wanted to get better so he can go home to his family, but he succumbed to the disease that severely damaged his lungs and kidneys.

I recall during my teenage years, he recognized my potential and passion for the sport of table tennis and whenever he called us from NY, he always reminded me to work hard, master my craft and stay focused and he promised me that when I am ready, he will help me get a chance to visit New York.

True to his words, came 2001, my Tito helped me with realizing my dream to go to the US. My Tito and Tita Au paid for my airfare, food, tournament fees, training, allowance and provided me with a place to stay above everything else. For the duration of my stay with them, I never felt that I was a burden to him or to his family and felt welcomed. I felt that he was very happy and rooting for me.

Before I flew back to Philippines, I told him “Tito, one day when I am able, I will pay you back for everything.” His reply to me was, “There is no need to pay me because I was happy doing it for you. When your time comes, I only ask you to help others and pay it forward.”

My Tito opened a whole new world for me. He gave me a chance to better myself and to be successful in what I do. He was a major influence in my life, he was my idol. I owe him my success and all that I have now. I can never repay the kindness he has shown and I hope he knew how much I love and truly appreciate him. In my book, he is a true champion and hero!

In 2011, with the help of my friends, I was able to cofound Philippine Table Tennis Academy (PTTA), a charity organization in Mandaluyong City, Philippines whose mission is to provide formal table tennis training to the Filipino youth with a focus on indigent group for free. The goal of PTTA is to utilize the sport of table tennis as a tool to smash poverty.

To honor my Tito’s heroism, bravery and contribution to all of us, as of today, I am renaming PTTA to ERWIN LAMBRENTO TABLE TENNIS ACADEMY in remembrance of his legacy of paying it forward. We will continue with our mission to help and develop the Filipino youth to be good citizens through the sport of table tennis.

Please join me in celebrating My Tito’s life by sharing this to your friends and families.

Rest assured I will look after my Tita Au, cousins Sigmund and Cara, Nanay and Tatay and you can rest in peace now. We will surely miss you and you will always be in our hearts, a loving memory of kindness and generosity.

Your loving nephew,

Ernesto Jon Ebuen
