DR. PEDRO T. ORATA
Dr. Pedro T. Orata was the father of Barangay High Schools in the Philippines and had his persistent labors and exceptional concern for the out-of-school youths in their educational needs of the people in the community. He occupied important positions in the Education sector, in the Philippines and the US. Orata exemplified the model of a contemporary hero who dedicated his life to serving his people.
He was awarded an Outstanding leadership award for his dedication to public service and his invaluable efforts in the field of education that sets an example to the youths today. The first community college in the Philippines, Urdaneta City University (UCU) founded in 1966, formerly known as City Colleges of Urdaneta (CCU) and Urdaneta Community College (UCC) was Dr. Orataโs expression of his great love, faith, and concern for the poor yet capable and deserving Filipino youth who cannot afford collegiate schooling in the cities.
Orataโs unfailing dedication to building multiple schools in barrios allowed the literacy rate of Pangasinan communities to have a modest increase over the decades. To this day, the majority of students who studied and learned from Orataโs projects made a significant contribution to the provinceโs development and Urdanetaโs transition to a model city.
OUR LADY OF THE IMMACULATE CONCEPTION CATHEDRAL
Urdaneta was founded on January 8, 1858. The Dominicans accepted it as a parish in 1863. The first Pastor of the town was Fr. Nicolas Manrique Alonzo. Before that, the parish had been administered by the Parish Priest of Binalonan.
It was Fr. Nicolas Manrique Alonzo who made and executed the townโs plans. He transferred an old camarin, which served as the house of worship, to the site where the townโs first church was later built. Fr. Rafael Cano started the construction of the old church on March 4, 1884; when finished, it was 77.10 meters long and 23.3 meters wide and had three naves. The American bombings, however, destroyed it in January 1945 during the Second World War. The ruins of the same church became the place where the old building of the newly established community high school, today Urdaneta City National High School (UCNHS), was.
In the course of time, Urdaneta became progressively religious and economically.
On January 12, 1985, His Holiness Pope John Paul II, by the virtue of the Papal Bull, NON RARO CATHOLICORUM erected the Diocese of Urdaneta. The Immaculate Conception Parish became the Seat of the Diocese of Urdaneta and is now called the Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception Cathedral.
URDANETA I CENTRAL SCHOOL GABALDON BUILDING
The Gabaldon Building was initially constructed in 1922 through the Gabaldon Act of 1907. It was completed in 1930. The building comprises 13 classrooms in the South wing and another 13 classrooms in the North wing, and 4 classrooms in front that complete the U-shape building structure.
During the Spanish regime, the padres taught the people in the convent. In 1905 a new one was built on a nearby site replacing the old one during the administration of Municipal President Valentin Ambrocio (1904-1906). It was located on the northwestern part of the present school grounds. With the passage of the Gabaldon Act of 1907 by the national legislature appropriating Php 1M for the construction of schools all over the country, a newer one of better materials replaced it.
Municipal President Paterno Rosario (1922-1935) negotiated for the acquisition of the present school site cutting Perez Street in two. Don Paternio started the construction of the current U-shape school building, continued by Mun. Peres. Ciriaco Sison (1923-1928) and completed by Mun. Pres. Macario Israel (1928-1930)
School Year 1941-1942 was barely halfway through when Pearl Harbor was bombed. Thus the world war included the Far East. Teachers and pupils did not open their books except for a few who sought to pursue their studies somehow.
By and large, interest in schooling went down almost zero. But despite their reluctance or hesitance, they were prodded to return by the Japanese soldiers (the Hentai/Infantrymen 1931-1945). As there were comparatively too few who enrolled, the Urdaneta Central Schoolโs north wing was used for the classrooms, while the front and south wings were for the garrisons of the Nippon soldiers.
Reconstruction of the school buildings began after the liberation. The Gabaldon Building was first rebuilt with the aid of the people of the United States of America under the Philippine Rehabilitation Act of 1946.
The Gabaldon Building of Urdaneta Central I School was restored by the Department of Education thru the National Heritage Commission in 2011-2012. The renovation was undertaken during the administration of Mario E. Campilla, Ed.D., Principal IV, Estelita V. Quisias, ED.D., School District Supervisor, and DepEd Division Officials Gloria R. Torres, CESO VI. Assistant Schools Division Superintendent and Maria Celia Junio-Fernandez, Ed.D., School Division Superintendent.
The school did not just mold young heroes but also successful alumni, one of whom was the Prominent Scout, Leonardo Estioko, who became a priest and was given a scholarship in Rome for his Doctor of Divinity, who was also an author of different books in Philosophy and a Professor in Philippine Normal University (PNU).

DIVINE WORD COLLEGE OF URDANETA
1967 saw the birth of the DIVINE WORD COLLEGE OF URDANETA (Formerly Known as Divine Word Academy)โ the realization of a long-cherished dream of its Founder, Rev. Fr. Augustine Herbers, SVD.
The idea of opening a Minor Seminary in Pangasinan was thoroughly discussed at the Provincial Chapter held in January 1963. Hence, a resolution was passed to open a Minor Seminary in Urdaneta. The six and half hectare lot in Bayaoas, Urdaneta was bought from the Sison Family. The lot is close to the highway crossing of the national highway leading to the North, South and West-East road, Dagupan and Eastern Pangasinan. The place is secluded and quiet enough for a seminary, the Superior General at that time decided to connect the Seminary with a High school and College. On March 20, 1966, the cornerstone was blessed with great solemnity by Most Reverend Mariano Madriaga, DD, Archbishop of Lingayen-Dagupan.
The three โ storey building has become the first building of the school used as a functional structure of the institution for school purposes.
The โMunicipal Buildingโ was erected in 1915 under the administration of Municipal President Hermenigildo Alonso to serve as the seat of local governments in Urdaneta.
Mr. Isidro Ramos wrote on the Children Summer Festival Souvenir Program in 1958. The destruction brought to the Philippines by the last war tremendously altered the structure of the building. The town of Urdaneta witnessed two battles. The first was the Japanese Invasion and the second and the worst was the battle for liberation where practically the whole Poblacion of Urdaneta was destroyed, including the municipal building.
According to Mr. Benigno M. de Guzman written on the 1973 Urdaneta Elective Officials Inauguration Souvenir Program, during the Japanese war bombing in December 1941, Mayor Patricio Abenojar ordered trenches to be dug behind the municipal building. In case of raids, the employees and other people would have a place to hide and protect themselves from exploding bombs.
Furthermore, according to Mr. Isidro Ramos, as a result of this mass destruction, the Poblacion was razed to the ground. Naturally, after the war, reconstructions of private and public buildings started immediately.
When Americans withdrew from the town, the municipal building started to be repaired slowly.
