TVIRD Group dominates National Fire Olympics, clinches national champion and first runner-up honors in industrial category

The TVIRD Balabag Emergency Response Team (ERT) achieved a notable milestone by cornering the championship title in the recently concluded National Fire Olympics in Baguio City. This success is shared with TVIRD’s wholly-owned company Greenstone Resources Corporation, operator of the Siana Gold Project – which secured first runner-up honors.

In commemoration of Fire Prevention Month, the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) held its 8th National Fire Olympics at the Melvin Jones Football Ground in Burnham Park, Baguio City from March 19 to 21. An estimated 1,600 participants from both the government and private sectors attended the event.

The three-day competition featured highlights, such as the Fire Ground Search and Rescue Challenge, Search and Rescue Attack, Firefighting Relay, and High-level Ropemanship – all geared towards promoting fire safety and emergency preparedness.

Earlier, both teams clinched their respective Regional Fire Olympic championship titles in the BFP’s provincial competitions. Siana captured the top plum in Caraga, while Balabag cornered their victory in Region IX.

The TVIRD Group leads a solid track record of safety and health performance – a mindset that resonates strongly within the group and continues to drive its performance over the years.

This same mindset extends to its communities who have been trained to respond to emergency situations and provide relief during times of crisis.

Greenstone Resources Corporation (GRC), a wholly-owned subsidiary of TVIRD and operator of the Siana Gold Project, successfully concluded its Livelihood Training Program for 2023 at its Mabakas Techno Demo Farm School.

A total of 127 scholars graduated, earning their national training certificates (NCII) in accredited courses such as Animal Production, Heavy Equipment, Rice Competitiveness Enhancement, Cacao Production, and the GRC Community Emergency Response Team Training.

The program garnered recognition from both TESDA and the Villar Foundation for its role as a partner in implementing the livelihood skills program.

The name ‘Mabakas’ directly translates to ‘industrious’ in the dialect of the Mamanwas, indigenous tribesmen of the Caraga Region where Greenstone operates. The institution is the only TESDA-accredited farm school supported and operated by a mining company – for which there are two under the TVIRD Group: one in GRC and one in the Agata Nickel Project.

TVIRD's Greenstone Resources Corporation (GRC), received an official visit from His Excellency David Bruce Hartman, Ambassador of Canada to the Philippines, last May 29-30 at its Siana Gold MIne (Siana) in Tubod.

Upon the invitation of TVIRD Chairman Clifford M. James, Ambassador Hartman was joined by Second Trade Secretary Kayla Slobodnik and Second Political Secretary Peter Wright on the two-day excursion.

The delegation was welcomed on site by key company officers and members of the indigenous Mamanwa Tribe and were likewise toured within the 3,289-hectare Siana MPSA area where they saw first-hand the developments on the company’s processing plant, main pit, tailings storage facilities and other major infrastructures.

The company also hosted a cocktail reception and welcome dinner for the Ambassador. Invited guests to the soiree include highest ranking officers of the Philippine Armed Forces and National Police, LGU officials as well as those from partner government agencies.

“It is through projects and investments like [TVI’s Siana Gold], that the mining industry will lead the way in the pursuit of a green economy,“ said Ambassador Hartman during his keynote message.

“In Canada, we see responsible business conduct as an essential element of the mining sector. The Government of Canada expects Canadian companies active abroad to respect human rights, to operate transparently and in consultation with host governments and local communities; and to work in a socially and environmentally responsible manner, while respecting local applicable laws as well as the OECD`s Guidelines for Multinational Enterprise. “

“We were thrilled to see the Philippines as the first country in the Indo-Pacific to have adopted Canada’s Toward Sustainable Mining (TSM) framework, and we appreciate TVIRD’s commitment to sustainable mining and [its] regular engagement with local civil society and indigenous peoples,“ he concluded.

In the country’s dynamic extractives and mineral development industry, going for mere compliance is simply not enough. Today’s mining companies are now measured by how closely they adhere to excellence – and so Agata takes daily strides in line of this pursuit.

Agata once again successfully garnered high scores in the recently concluded Tenement, Safety, Health, Environment and Social Development (TSHES) Audit initiated by the MGB Region XIII last month.

The TSHES Audit Team was composed of the highly qualified members from MGB Region XIII.

The company’s success in the recent audit is testament that it takes compliance seriously and holds its environmental priority in the highest regard.

MGB 13 stated that Agata remains “the gold standard of compliance amongst its counterparts in the mining capital of the Philippines, the Caraga Region,” as the agency concluded the audit and released no significant negative findings.

TVIRD Adopts Twin Rivers in Zamboanga del Sur, Earns Accolades from Environment Bureau

“Clean water and clean air are the best gifts that we could leave our children,” highlighted the speech of Chairman Danilo Sauclom of Barangay Depore – host of TVIRD’s Balabag Gold and Silver Project – who expressed the paramount importance of a clean and sustainable natural environment during the recent launch of the company’s Adopt-a-River Project.

Supported by the government’s Environmental Management Bureau (EMB) in Zamboanga Peninsula, the project aims to improve the physical condition and to prevent further degradation of the town’s Dipili and Depore Rivers.

Sauclom, a member of the Multipartite Monitoring Team (MMT) and a known environmentalist, underscored the importance of a clean environment by saying “it could live without people, but people could not live without it.”

Philippine Ducks Thrive in TVIRD’s Sulphide Dam

Oftentimes, the silence of TVIRD’s Sulphide Dam is broken only by the loud and successive quacking of the waterbirds that made the company’s Tailings Storage Facility (TSF) its sanctuary for the last seven years. The quacking is then followed by splashing on the calm waters – and one can only surmise that the Philippine Ducks (Anas Luzonica) are thriving!

Visitors of the company are always in awe of the dam’s size – some 34 hectares wide and120 meters deep. The TSF, which was used during the company’s copper-zinc mining operations, is a structural beauty in itself. Surrounded by lush and cool Mt. Canatuan, it looks like a lake with clear, green water.

And the presence of the Philippine Ducks makes the man-made lake even more interesting.

TVIRD Group of Companies Rolls-Out Tabang Caraga for Typhoon-Stricken Communities in Mindanao

Almost 12,000 households benefitted from the joint relief operations dubbed “Tabang Caraga” for victims of Super Typhoon Odette that battered CARAGA Region and the rest of the country more than a week ago.

The relief operations was jointly conducted by TVIRD, Agata, Greenstone and the Villar Sipag Foundation. The initiative was launched a day after Odette hit two Surigao provinces and Dinagat Islands.

The relief effort covered the eight barangays under Agata’s nickel mining operation, including the coastal barangays of Binuangan, Tinigbasan, Tagpangahoy and Lawigan. Also included were residents of inland barangays E. Morgado, Tagbuyacan, Colorado and La Paz. The operations likewise benefitted the host and nearby communities of Greenstone in the town of Tubod as well as affected households in Surigao and Dinagat Islands.

An Environmental Program that is Both Transformative and ‘Instagrammable’

Agata continues to implement effective and sustainable rehabilitation programs that highlights its “Mining and Ecotourism” concept through the successful conversion of its mined-out areas into eco-tourism sites.

Agata may not be the biggest nickel project in the country. But whatever it lacks in size is compensated through innovations, environmental programs and socio-cultural projects replicated by other companies.

Agata designed its rehabilitation programs to give equal importance to replanting mined-out areas and protecting existing forests in order to conserve its natural environment. The balance between production and protection is essential in sustaining the community’s livelihood and protecting local resources.

It has barely started its commercial mining operation. Yet, TVIRD has already asked the government’s permission to adopt two of the town’s vital bodies of water.

In his letter addressed to the Zamboanga Peninsula OIC and regional director of the Environmental Management Bureau (EMB), TVIRD Vice President Edsel Abrasaldo expressed the company’s intent to adopt Dipili and Depore Rivers to help the government in its campaign to protect the environment and improve the physical condition of the country’s rivers and waterways.

TVIRD wants to adopt a one kilometer stretch of Dipili and Depore Rivers that traverse Bayog – the host town of the company’s gold and silver mining operations. Both are tributaries on Sibugay River, which at approximately 58 kilometers, is the longest river in the Zamboanga Peninsula.

This is not the first time the company has adopted a critical body of water in order to help preserve it. TVIRD’s Agata Nickel Project previously adopted a stretch of Kalinawan River – which is the cleanest inland body of water in the Caraga Region, and possibly the entire Province of Agusan del Norte.

Mining stakeholders of Bayog, Zamboanga del Sur are jubilant that TVIRD finally commenced its commercial mining operations in Sitio Balabag. Subanen tribal leaders as well as local government officials are likewise optimistic that with this development, people in the region will surely benefit from the increased economic activity in downstream industries.

The news also brought a smile to the 78-year old tribal leader, Timuay Casiano Edal – a member of the Subanen tribal council and one of the signatories of the MOA signed by the tribe and TVIRD. The MOA enumerates the duties and responsibilities of the two parties as the company utilizes the Subanen ancestral lands and harnesses its resources.

“After many years of waiting, finally TVIRD is operational. I never thought I would still witness its mining operations,” the chieftain told TVIRD Community Relations Officer Lope Dizon.

Edal was among the many Subanens who warmly welcomed the company’s geologists assigned to explore Balabag some 20 years ago.

Engr. Ariel Ogiagan is one of the top officials of the Local Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office in the town of Baliguian, a third-class municipality in Zamboanga del Norte Province. And after seeing him in his office, one can easily speculate that this young civil engineer has come a long way.

A son of a farmer and member of the Subanon tribe, Engr. Ogiagan is one of the 91 scholars of TVIRD.

Being among the top performers of his class and a member of his tribe were the merits on which the company provided him a scholarship grant.

“The opportunity for a better education and decent life is the best thing that TVIRD has done for me and my family,” said Engr. Ogiagan. His sentiment is shared by fellow scholars who are now working in both government and the private sector.

From Educators to Licensed Professionals: TVIRD Scholars Make Waves in Their Chosen Fields

From 2004 to 2020, TVIRD spent more than Php11-million pesos for its scholarship program. The amount is on top of the construction cost of the first school buildings and library of Canatuan Elementary and National High School as well as the salaries of both school’s first four school teachers.

When TVIRD concluded its Canatuan operations in 2014, it also produced professional teachers, nurses, midwives, civil engineers, agriculturists, geologists, an environmental engineer, a forester and a member of the Philippine Navy.

Geologist Ryan Lumabi mentioned earlier that the education provided to him by the company gave him the fighting chance to reach his dream.

Prior to TVIRD’s entry, Dipili River in Bayog was laden with toxic waste from chemicals, including Cyanide, which were discarded by illegal small-scale miners at Sitio Balabag. In addition, human waste from hundreds of workers and their families were also thrown there, leaving a dead river that festered over time.

Illegal artisanal mining was the livelihood of many people in this town since the early 90s. People from neighboring towns in Zamboanga de Sur and other Mindanao provinces came in droves to join the gold rush in Balabag – literally “making a killing” (of the environment) in the process.

This wanton activity only came to a halt in 2012 when the MGB issued and implemented a Cease and Desist Order and completely dismantled the illegal facilities through the assistance of the NBI, the Philippine Army and the PNP.

Since then, TVIRD obtained an MPSA in this town and started rehabilitating Balabag’s dying environment. As the company commemorates Environment Month, it also looks back on its history in Balabag – and how it has brought its people upon the threshold of prosperity.

A testament from three natives of Bayog Town

He once labored for an illegal small-scale miner of this town during the late 2000s. Carrying a sack of gold ore on his frail back, he either walked through the rain or under the heat of the sun just to bring the precious cargo into his boss’ makeshift processing plant.

Yet, what Marvin M. Edal got was a meager Php20 for his daily one kilometer walk over a rolling terrain. And he did not even have mandated health benefits!

In 2010, Marvin took the opportunity to work with the exploration team of TVIRD. After a brief hiatus to finish his high school, he rejoined the company in 2015 as one of the facilitators of TVIRD’s Community Relations Office .

Like Marvin, Admin Assistant Dionel Barut loves his work at TVIRD. Dionel, 23, is a BS Hotel and Restaurant Management graduate. He heads the company’s chefs and kitchen staff in crafting the menu and preparing food served daily at the mess hall.

“TVIRD values its workers, especially those who are honest in doing their work,” according to Julito M. Bate, a carpenter and father of seven children. Bate was already a construction worker even before joining the company in 2012 but his experience with TVIRD led him to give his best in all his works.

Imelda Residents: Help Came When We Needed It Most

“It was a touching gesture. The assistance provided to us came when we needed it most,” said Imelda Town residents who were provided with food packs by TVIRD. The assistance came after the devastating storm battered the town and hit Barangay Poblacion the hardest.

Danny Gamil, leader of a barangay purok (a subset of a barangay) and neighbor Nolyn G. Palme said the arrival of the food packs helped their families survive for days after Storm Crising brought heavy flooding.

The company’s efforts provided immediate relief to an estimated 400 families in the municipality.

Earlier, TVIRD provided assistance to some 250 families from Barangays Dimalinao, Kahayagan and Dipili directly after Crising battered these barangays with strong floods and extraordinary rainfall.

Specifically for Zamboanga del Sur, this is not the first time that a natural disaster of this magnitude brought savage destruction to homes and farmlands.
