Myth:
If I lose a tooth in the back of the mouth, it is not a big deal because no one sees it anyway.

Toothfairy Fact:
Empty spaces in the back are a big deal! When you have an empty space, the adjacent teeth can drift and tilt, causing spacing, gum pockets, and loss of bone. Opposing teeth will tend to slowly erupt out of its socket in an attempt to meet up with another tooth. Additionally, if multiple teeth are lost in the back of the mouth, it causes additional stress on the other teeth, resulting in the enamel to wear faster. In the case of heavy grinders, missing teeth in the back can cause front teeth to wear, chip and break, causing their bite to collapse, and slowly break down what is seen when smiling.

Oil pulling is not enough oral hygiene regimen at home!
Nothing can replace flossing. You may miss out on brushing your teeth sometimes, but never ever on flossing them.

Oil pulling while it is good, is recommended and is beneficial, is only an adjunct to oral hygiene. It may not remove or dislodge food debris that may have gotten stuck between your teeth after eating a meal. Food debris between teeth causes gum disese, tooth decay, and therefore bad breath and eventual tooth loss.

Floss! It is a necessary tooland activity in order to maintain oral health. It tones your gums and keeps them tight to hold your teeth in place.

Floss and say goodbye to bleeding gums! Bleeding gums means gum disease from gingivitis to periodontitis which means inflammation of tissues around the teeth. Gum disease can lead to heart disease, low birth rate, and bone loss, among other diseases. I have yet to meet a patient that wants to lose all of her teeth in favor of wearing full dentures. (Makes one look old, by the way).

So you see, it is up to you and your dentist to help you keep yourself in good shape. Ask your dentist to teach you how to floss. Your oral health is your responsibility.

Floss and save a whole lot of money from costly dental treatment! Talk to your dentist about this. Visit them regularly for prophylaxis, including checking your gums and screening for cancer.

Truly, the mouth is the window into the health of your body.
