The world is changing fast. The way we do things had evolved from paper and pen to keyboard and clouds. If we do not update ourselves, we will be obsolete. Making fire is one of the first discovery of man. It helped man to cook his food and light his night. Fire has been an essential element primarily in cooking especially in big commercial kitchens. Kitchen fires happen as the control been overlooked or neglected. Without consistent cleaning, maintenance and checking of gauges, the fire may be uncontrollable and soon engulf the whole place. Manage the fire, you manage the risk of losing everything to fire.

Whatever you are working at, whether it is a big project at work or a small one at home, in order to analyze the situation, weigh out the risks, we must learn to ask the right questions. Only then could we come up with better solutions.

Safety is the state of being protected from harm or danger. Risk management is more realistic than safety because it acknowledges that hazards are inevitable and cannot be completely eliminated, but rather managed and minimized. By using risk management, an organization can anticipate and prepare for potential threats, as well as seize opportunities, to achieve its objectives. Safety, however, may imply a false sense of security or complacency, which can lead to overlooking or ignoring risks. Therefore, risk management is a more proactive and effective approach than safety.

At long last, CRMI (Center for Risk Management International) will take the first step to enable the Filipinos and those who are able to reach this communication, by offering training in Risk Management that is founded on 37 years of experience. Most of you, would have heard about Risk Management but aren’t aware of the benefits it brings and its relevance to your profession, career, or personal life.

CRMI was created exactly for the purpose of educating society on how to best make use of this scientific coordination process of managing risks.

Nature itself abides by the precepts of Risk Management. The recent Covid-19 pandemic challenge that has literally plagued mankind shows the intentional effort to quicken and strengthen the human race by challenging each one’s physical health leaving only the fittest and the brightest (those who are able to prepare, react and protect themselves) survived. This has prepared the human genome to be ready, robust and responsive to future health threats that may affect the society, such as the present smog health threat affecting Metro Manila.

This same way, by which Mother Nature manages threats, is parallel with the process by which risks can be managed in business, in an enterprise, organization or even your profession, or personal life.

Every day, we face different kinds of risks, from the time we wake up, going out of our homes to work or even just shop, we learn to navigate life with caution. We do not live in a vacuum and say we can totally eliminate risks. What we should learn is how to be aware of these risks surrounding us, analyze them and be ready to take actions to mitigate or avoid them.

It is true that we need to have the latest equipment, gadgets and technology in order to be more efficient at work. So we need our people to be properly trained in order to use what we have invested in. This is one way of caring for your people. With this in mind, should we not also observe and practice safety no matter what the circumstances are?

There are some people who would say, 'that is not in my scope.' When working safely, accountability should not be limited to your scope of work. We are accountable for what we do, but also what we left out or not do.

What is Common Sense ? = sound and prudent judgment based on a simple perception of the situation or facts.

Each day, we become cautious in our daily routines, we have another day to look forward to. If we value our tomorrows, we should value our today by doing things wisely and safely.

Everyday we are faced with certain challenges that require us to make the right choice. When it comes to safety, it should always be our first choice and not leave anything to chance. Choosing safety is a wise decision.
