Top lessons from the book "The Difference Between Advising and Shaming" by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie highlights the distinctions between constructive feedback and harmful criticism.

1. Intent Matters: Advising aims to help and support the person, while shaming intends to belittle and demean. The motivation behind the words significantly impacts how they are received.

2. Respect and Dignity: Effective advice respects the recipient's dignity and self-worth. Shaming, on the other hand, undermines a person's sense of value and can cause emotional harm.

3. Constructive vs. Destructive: Advising provides constructive feedback that can lead to improvement and growth. Shaming is destructive and often leaves the person feeling worse about themselves without a clear path forward.

4. Focus on Behavior, Not Person: Advising addresses specific behaviors or actions and suggests ways to improve them. Shaming attacks the person's character or identity, making it personal and hurtful.

5. Empathy and Understanding: Good advice comes from a place of empathy and understanding. It considers the person's circumstances and feelings. Shaming lacks empathy and often ignores the individual's context.

6. Encouragement vs. Discouragement: Advising encourages and motivates the person to do better. It is supportive and uplifting. Shaming discourages and can lead to a decrease in self-esteem and motivation.

7. Long-term Impact: Advising fosters a positive long-term impact, building trust and encouraging continuous improvement. Shaming can have long-lasting negative effects, damaging relationships and causing emotional scars.

These lessons highlight the importance of delivering feedback with care, empathy, and respect to support and uplift others, rather than tearing them down.

"I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer. Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration. I will face my fear. I will permit it to pass over me and through me. And when it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path. Where the fear has gone there will be nothing. Only I will remain.”

Our Story

We sell books online as well as at the bazaars and other selling events we join, most notably theLegaspi Park Sunday Market Makati City held every Sunday, 7am to 2pm at the Corinthian Carpark between Corinthian Plaza and Washington Sycip Park.

This Facebook account also represents the reading services of its owner, Sandy Allan-Beltran, who conducts one-on-one reading sessions with clients on a by-appointment-only basis, in cafes within the Ayala Circuit Mall area, Makati.

READING SESSIONS with SANDY of THE READING ROOM:

For those interested in booking reading sessions with Sandy, please text 0917 522 2100. Calls will not be entertained.

Reading sessions are held at the cafes of Ayala Circuit Mall, Makati, on these days & times: Mondays to Fridays: 1pm, 3pm, 5pm & 7pm.

Sessions are one-on-one, and last 1 hour to as much as an hour and a half. Readings are charged P1500 per session, per person.

Weekends & online reading schedules are no longer available. We will not be taking any advanced bookings for beyond that time at the moment.

Sandy will stop reading clients by June 1, 2020.

More details about reading sessions:

Tarot cards are not used. This is not prophecy, or "hula" (the Filipino term for fortune telling, or guesswork). This is not mind-reading, or hypnotism.

"Soul Card Readings" were what these used to be called, but Sandy no longer utilizes this tool. Instead, an in-depth conversation supplemented with hard-hitting questions and probing issues shared by the client take place.

All information gained during reading sessions are kept confidential.

Clarity. Guidance. Resolution. At the most, these and more may be gained from a reading with Sandy, who has been serving clients with her skills for over 30 years. At the least, truth and an insightful perspective over troubles of the client may lead them to more progressive paths in their life.

Peace to you all, and may we always be blessed!
