How to mic an orchestra?
For a live concert with PA and foldback, use directional pattern mics. Distance to source as close as possible without overloading the transducer.
Acoustic guitar mic comparison. Small diaphragm mics with cardioid pattern. One performance. Same preamps.
The mics:
UA SP-1
Neumann KM 184
BeesNeez Lulu FET
DPA 4099 (Supercardioid)
Piano stereo mic'ing quick test
Yamaha U1 piano
Mics: DPA 4099, Universal Audio SP1, OPR 84
1. One performance
2. Different preamps: 4099> Great River mp2nv, SP1>Stam 1073, OPR84>BAE 1073. Gain was ballpark matched during recording.
3. No reverb. Only a limiter on the master bus.
4. Positioning/placement is fast and quick. Capsules were not aligned.
Just sharing. HTH but YMMV. This video is to inform those interested that we study each instrument for recording, apt for the application/context, and prepare its condition, in addition to having various professional equipment selection as well as location with proper acoustics.
That Band Astra in the studio working on their new songs.
I'd like to share a bit of my process/method to those interested. There are many ways to approach recording a song and this is but one that I find to work.
Due to the dynamic nature of the song, which while in 4/4, had sections with triplets, pauses and breakdowns - so wr set them up for live recording of the rhythm section, without a metronome or click - to preserve the live and explosive moments.
On this clip, it's drums, bass, rhythm guitar and guide vox inside the room so that the musicians have direct eye contact with each other. Goal on this take is to have keeper drum parts, then overdub everything else.
What about bleed? There is none or super minimal bleed to the drum tracks. Mic gain levels are so low coz of the super loud source
Guitars go to an amp to our PHATBOX isolated speaker cab.
Bass guitar is DI with a little bit of cab volume to push a bit of air as that helps musicians feel the groove.
Vox is multed to a PA so that musicians know exactly where not to cross path with vocals.
There, a bit of technical BTS to give an idea on the myth of recording live. Good luck!

Two Twin87 by United Studio Tech. Ran a test on both with singer songwriter material, just acoustic guitar and singer; one set to modern vs one set to vintage.
For music and singing, I'll choose vintage mode.
For dialog.and voiceover, I'll go with modern mode.

Drums GOBO has been completed and deployed. Now I can record drums in the same room together with other instruments coz the benefits of visual feedback and proximity is priceless. Imagine upright bass, upright piano, maybe even vocals! Not going for total isolation but a pronounced reduction only coz bleed is gewd!
