Ash Wednesday: Lent Begins
Ash Wednesday marks the start of the Lent season, the time for prayer, fasting, and almsgiving. This lasts for 40 days to remind us of the days that Jesus Christ spent fasting in the desert and his defeat of temptation. Ashes play a significant role in this, as they symbolize death and repentance. During this period, Christians repent of their sins and grieve because they believe Christ died in order to atone for them.
During the 40-day period, fasting and abstinence are observed:
Fasting is a form of penance where an individual is only permitted to eat one full meal or portions that are smaller than what you would eat on a normal day. This can only be done by Catholics ages 18β59. Other than Ash Wednesday, this can also be observed on Good Friday.
Abstinence refers to refraining from certain foods, specifically meat and poultry products, in remembrance of how Jesus sacrificed his flesh for us on Good Friday. This can only be done by Catholics who are at least 14. Unlike fasting, abstinence is only observed on the Fridays of the Lent season.
May this day and this season serve as a time for us to reflect on our lives, confess our sins, seek repentance, and prepare ourselves spiritually as the most sacred week approaches.
"Remember you are dust, and to dust you shall return." (Genesis 3:19)

Theresian Basketball Team faces tough competition against De La Salle Basketball Team, 106-72
The match between STCJA and DLSAU took place at the De La Salle Araneta University PE Gymnasium on Saturday, February 3, the gym bustling with anticipation as senior high school students were spotted at the event, actively cheering for our players.
The game commenced with a jump ball between STCJAβs player #11, Arcinue, and DLSAUβs #15, Buban; the latter taking hold of the ball, officially starting the match.
During the first quarter, the Theresian team adapted a man-to-man defense, whereas the DLSAU players focused on double or even triple-teaming STCJA athletes holding the ball. The first quarter ended with scores 35-14 in favor of DLSAU, putting STCJA at a disadvantage of a 21-point deficit.
Despite the gap however, in the duration of second to third quarter, STCJA strived to keep up with the pace of DLSAU players, scoring 40 points compared to their 42 points. The majority of the shots consisted of putbacks from both teams but with notably more three-pointers from DLSAU shooters.
STCJAβs Vice-Captain Lawrence Baldismo, #25, had a prominent presence on the court, along with Christian Navaroza, #8, and John Samonte, #31, scoring the most points for the team. However, with multiple fouls from both STCJA and DLSAU, things get rocky especially once Baldismo gets injured, weakening the teamβs offensive play.
Apart from the loss of the stellar player Baldismo, the opposing team showcased a formidable force from their players having a confounding drive and skill for shooting, specifically from player Buban, Jersey #15, with Rangel, #11 and Cruz, #14, following soon after. As all DLSAU players seemed to be well-rounded, equipped with incredible speed and unwavering stamina, this sentiment was just made even more evident during substitutions.
During the fourth and final quarter of the game, fast break plays by the opposing team's players, again with Buban securing the win for DLSAU, concluded the game, resulting in scores 35-14, 54-32, 77-54, and the final score of 106-72 with a 34-point gap.
Post-game, after the STCJA team and DLSAU team exchanged congratulations, a coach from the opposing team later on approached a Theresian player stating that though they were indeed strong, what the team lacked was not strength, but stamina and endurance. The same sentiment was brought up again by Coach James Serrano, along with other critiques directed at their play, as they reflected on the game during the ride home.
The next upcoming match with PROBEX will be held tomorrow, February 7, at 1:00 pm. This holds a promise while lighting a fire for the STCJA basketball team, as they seek to redeem themselves and finally get a taste of sweet victory, fueled by newfound determination to work harder, and improve during the short break.
Stay tuned for more at the Manuscript page, for the results of the next game STCJA vs PROBEX or join us in watching the match live!
And remember, despite the unfortunate defeat, we mustn't let this dishearten us. Keep your heads held high and stand strong, Theresians; the battle is not over just yet.

The Santiago Brothers emerge victorious against the Chiefs of Arellano University - Elisa Esguerra Campus, 3-0
Theresian athletes and siblings, Justin and Stephen Santiago proudly return home in triumph after defeating the Chiefs of Arellano University for the Championship title in the Table Tennis Tournament MALPRISAA for the High School Male Division at the De Lasalle Araneta University Institutional Activity Center on Saturday, February 3.
To kick off the game, Chief representatives of Arellano University - Elisa Esguerra Campus, Lowie Magdipig and Ahjay Lorenzo, win the coin toss by calling tails, officially initiating the rally. Lorenzo serves first, Magdipig positioned to his left, while Justin takes the receiving end, accompanied by Stephen to his left as well.
The match unfolds with both teams maintaining steady scores before the Santiagos surge ahead in the later sets of the game, claiming victory with scores of 13-11, 11-7, and 11-9. Their performance showcased both exceptional coordination and reaction time in defense, coupled with speed and agility during their offensive plays.
A highlight of the game was a remarkable save by Chief player Lowie Magdipig, with his impressive reflexes to keep the rally alive, only to be met with Justinβs fast-paced and powerful smash, which later makes another appearance, securing the siblingβs score as the final victors.
The awarding ceremony was held promptly right after the event, with the siblings smiling widely, fresh with the face of victory, cheered on by the jubilant audience inside the open arena.
Congratulations to both Justin and Stephen Santiago for being the Champions of the High School Division Male Doubles Tournament, with more awards and medals that await in their future games!

Praise be to the monarch of monarchs who suffered for our sins! Today, we observe the feast of the Black Nazarene, an image of a dark-skinned Jesus Christ carrying the True Cross. Devotees believe that the image can bring miracles and cure diseases by physically touching it. Every year on the 9th of January, the original image or its replica is given a religious procession called the "Traslacion" where hundreds of thousands of devotees attend the event.
Let us attend masses and offer our sincere prayers and praises to commemorate this special day. Viva Nuestro Padre Jesus Nazareno!

βCharacter cannot be developed in ease and quiet. Only through experience of trial and suffering can the soul be strengthened, vision, ambition inspired, and success achieved.β - Helen Keller.
Reflecting on the anticipation we felt in 2023 for the year ahead, we were eager for the possibilities that awaited us.
The challenges surfaced early on as Januaryβa time for planning annual gatheringsβmade it tough for us to uphold the Filipino tradition of celebrating Christmas and New Year's Eve together due to ongoing Covid-19 restrictions.
However, with the steady decline in Covid cases, we found ourselves able to reunite and enjoy each other's company. Adapting to the 'new normal' meant wearing facemasks and being cautious in social settings while keeping abreast of current laws for our safety.
Throughout the year, we experienced aches from the weight of expectations, fears of falling short of our own standards, excessive worry about others' opinions, and the sorrow stemming from missed opportunities. Yet, we believed that our dedication and unwavering focus on finding the positives in every situation would compensate for these challenges.
Congratulations on navigating through the hurdles of the year and doing your utmost. Let's strive for continuous improvement, supporting each other as we aim higher in the coming year. Here's to a New Year ahead! Cheers!

On the 30th of December in 1896, JosΓ© Rizal met his demise at the hands of the Spanish Colonial Government. His ex*****on was for the crime of rebellion, a charge stemming from his influential writings during the Philippine Revolution.
JosΓ© Protacio Rizal Mercado y Alonso Realonda lived a multifaceted life as a doctor and a novelist who wielded his pen as a powerful weapon in the battle for Philippine Independence.
Rizal dedicated himself to exposing the injustices under Spanish rule through literary works like Noli Me Tangere (Touch Me Not) and its sequel, El Filibusterismo (The Reign of Greed).
His legacy includes being a leader in the Propaganda Movement La Liga Filipina, contributions as a writer for La Solidaridad, and a leading spokesperson for the Philippine Reform Movement.
Rizal held a political program advocating the integration of the Philippines as a Spanish province, seeking equality for Filipinos and Spaniards under the law in the Spanish Parliament, the Cortes.
In a final act of defiance during his ex*****on, though ordered to be shot in the forehead, Rizal turned his back to the firing squad, symbolically opposing Spanish rule even in his last moments, drawing his final breath with words, "Consummatum Est!" (It is finished!), at exactly 7:03 am, on December 30, 1896.
Rizal Day is commemorated annually on the anniversary of JosΓ© Rizal's death, serving as a reminder of his lasting legacy in Philippine history. As a prominent figure in seeking Philippine Independence, monuments dedicated to Rizal stand as enduring symbols of our nation's pride, resilience, and patriotism. This occasion reminds us of the significant contributions of our heroes who fought for our freedom, paving the way for the independent and sovereign country we have today, free from the shackles of colonization.
