A shrub or small tree up to 5m tall;bark grey,motled,smooth,bast consisting of silky fibers;young branches initially densely pubescent but glabrescent.

Leaves alternate,simple and entire,oblong-lanceolate to elliptical-oblong or ovate -oblong,14-18cmV 5.5-8.5cm,usually cuneate at base,acute or accuminate at apex,chartaceuos to subcoriaceuos,usually glabrous pinately veined with 12-18 pairs of veins,petiole 4-6mm long;stipules absent.

Inflourescence usually axillary,often simple and umbelliform;pendicle c.5mm long

Flowers bisexual,regular 5-merous,13-16mm long,whitish,pedicle c.3mm long,articulated at base,calyx tube cylindrical,puberulous,lobes 2-3mm long;petaloid appendages usually 10,united into a ring and inserted near apex of the calyxtube;stamens usually 10,inserted near petaloud appendages,sessile;ovary superior,short-stiped,2-loculate,style short,stigma capitate.

Fruit a globose to ellipsoid locolicidal capsule,protuding lateral from split floral tube,c.2cm long,orange-red,1-2seeded.

Seeds broadly ovoid,plano-convex,c 1cm.long,with short appendage.

A.cumingiana occurs in primary forest at low and medium altitude,today it can be planted in homeyard,farms,plantations.

In the philippines,the bark and roots of Aquilaria cumingiana are applied to wounds to stop bleeding,whereas barkwood and fruits are used to treat jaundice and body pains.Also used as tonic during pregnancy and after childbirth.

Incense from wood considered aphrodisiac,carminative and sedative.Used in treatment of cancer,especialy of the thyroid gland,also treatment of asthma and abdominal compliants such as colic and diarrhea.

In India,agarwood has been used as antidesynteric;used in gout,rheumatism,paralysis and as stimulant in sexual debility.

A.cumingiana are highly adaptable to any tropical environment.It is not much difficult to propagate compare to other Aquilaria species.
