The Philippine Stock Exchange (PSE) has officially introduced short selling in the market, a move approved by the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). This development follows years of discussion and planning. Short selling is a trading strategy where investors bet on the decline of a stock's price. It involves borrowing shares to sell them at the current price, with the hope of buying them back at a lower price later, thus profiting from the price difference.

The introduction of short selling is seen as a step towards enhancing liquidity in the market and attracting more significant investments, particularly from foreign investors. It's a common practice in many stock exchanges globally and is used as a hedging mechanism against market volatility.

However, short selling does come with its risks. If the price of the borrowed stock rises instead of falling, the investor faces a potential loss. This strategy also involves borrowing stocks and using margin, which can incur fees, interest, and margin calls. The risks associated with short selling are higher compared to traditional stock buying strategies.

Currently, the PSE limits short selling to stocks that belong to the PSE index, mid-cap index, dividend yield index, and exchange-traded funds. This move comes when trading participation at the PSE is low and stocks are trading at cheap valuations.

Latest Update: The inflation rate in the Philippines dropped again, reaching 4.1% in November, down from 4.9% in October 2023. This continued decline is mainly due to reduced food inflation, which fell to 5.8% from 7.1% in October.
