[ NATIONAL PRESS FREEDOM DAY ]

[ MARCELO H. DEL PILAR DAY ]

Today, August 30, the Philippines honors the birth of Marcelo H. del Pilar, a monumental figure in the nation's struggle for independence and the Father of Philippine Journalism. Born in 1850 in Bulacan, del Pilar was a lawyer, patriot, and most notably, a pioneering journalist whose work laid the foundation for Filipino press freedom.

Del Pilar is best remembered for his leadership in the Propaganda Movement, an intellectual crusade that sought to expose the injustices of Spanish colonial rule. As the editor of La Solidaridad, the movement's foremost publication, he used his platform to champion the rights of Filipinos and criticize the abuses of Spanish friars. His writings, often under the pseudonym "Plaridel," were instrumental in awakening the nationalist spirit among his countrymen.

Through his fearless and incisive journalism, del Pilar not only informed and educated the Filipino people but also united them in their fight for freedom. His work in La Solidaridad is a testament to the power of the press as a tool for social change, solidifying his legacy as the Father of Philippine Journalism.

As we commemorate his birth on August 30, we remember Marcelo H. del Pilar as more than just a national hero. His dedication to truth and justice, through the written word, continues to inspire the principles of journalism and freedom of expression in the Philippines today.

NEWS | On August 27, the College of Hospitality and Tourism Management (CHTM) welcomed the freshmen of AY 2024-2025 with "ELEV8 Chapter 1: CHTM Freshmen Orientation," held at Valencia Hall.

The event officially began with opening remarks from Dr. Aimee Grace M. Madlangbayan, the dean of CHTM, who delivered a motivational message to the students. "Share your knowledge and skills; don't keep it to yourself. Challenge yourself and your peers on a daily basis and embrace one another's passion. And above all, have fun," says Dean Madlangbayan, encouraging them to learn and grow continuously while enjoying the journey.

Following the dean's remarks, each section showcased their spirit and unity through prepared chants in the Cheer Competition, which heightened the energy and camaraderie among the freshmen.

Next, Dr. Nerissa Calara gave a presentation on the history of CHTM, detailing the college's origins and its ongoing journey of growth and excellence. Her talk was followed by a lively dance performance from the CHTM Tiger Crew.

Subsequently, Ms. Lea Rose Vizcarra, MSHTM Program Chair from BSTM, and Mr. Aldwin King J. Manlong, Program Chair from BSHM, introduced the program and the faculty of Tourism Management and Hospitality in CHTM. The faculty members were called on stage, and this was followed by an E-library Orientation featuring an audio-visual presentation that familiarized the freshmen with what it offers. Dr. Delma B. Ortega, the Associate Dean of CHTM, then provided an overview of the Student Handbook before another engaging icebreaker game.

The orientation continued with the introduction of the Local Student Council (LSC) and other CHTM student organizations—FAST, CHARMS, BEST, CMA, CTC, and THE SIZZLERS. Each organization and publication set up interactive booths and performances that captured the interest and excitement of the freshmen, further enriching their orientation experience.

Overall, the "ELEV8 Chapter 1: CHTM Freshmen Orientation" successfully set the tone for the new academic year, leaving the freshmen feeling welcomed, informed, and eager to embark on their journey at CHTM. | via Catherine Cruz, THE SIZZLERS

[ NATIONAL HEROES DAY ]

FEATURE | Each year, we gather in solemn remembrance to honor the valiant champions who fought for the freedom we now hold dear. These noble souls were guided by an unyielding sense of duty, driven by an unwavering love for our motherland. The title “Heroes” bestowed upon them is more than a mere label — it is a testament to their role as the true defenders of the Philippines, far beyond the mere ordnance they wielded.

Yet, in our reflection, a question arises: Are these warriors the only ones worthy of being called heroes? Heroes are not confined to the battlefield; they are among us, inspiring us daily. They serve as living examples that heroism is not defined by grand gestures alone, but by the quiet, steadfast dedication to one’s role in life. | via Bea Bianca Figueroa, THE SIZZLERS

Ayon kay Ros, “Doing grooming and makeup workshops and seminars basically gives a little more confidence to the audience who's receiving it. Hindi lang siya para sa physical appearance, but actually, the one wearing it gets to have a boost of confidence.”

| via JV Mahilum

NEWS | In a show of university spirit and advocacy, students gathered in front of the BulSU Activity Center to participate in the "BALANGAW: Color Fun Run X Marketplace for a Cause," an event organized by the BulSU Student Government, August 22.

This event is part of the "Salubong Balik Pamantasan 2024" series, aimed at welcoming students back to campus with a blend of fun and purpose.

Initially, the program featured a range of activities designed to engage students, including the highly anticipated Color Fun Run. Unfortunately, the Fun Run had to be canceled due to unforeseen technical difficulties.

Despite this setback, the event continued with a mini-concert and a bustling marketplace, ensuring that students had plenty of opportunities to enjoy themselves.

Key student leaders, including Gov. Alvin Abad Sagabaen from the College of Arts and Literature, Senator Coco Caparas, Chairperson of the Gender Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion Community (GEDIC), and Senator Owa Bautista, Chairperson of the Committee of Student Groups (CSG), spearheaded the event. Their leadership ensured the success of the Marketplace for a Cause, which featured local business owners who pledged a portion of their profits as donations to support the LGBTQIA+ community.

Mx. Lovely Vasquez, Punong Raya of BulSU Bahaghari, also addressed the crowd, emphasizing the importance of unity in the fight for equal rights: "Narito tayo nagsasama-sama at nagtitipon para sa iisang hangarin, ang magkaroon ng pantay na karapatan. We need our state to recognize our rights, oras na para sa SOGIE Equality Bill, oras na para wakasan ang diskriminasyon."

Furthermore, a mini-concert organized by the BulSU Student Government featured performances by a lineup of talented artists, including Banda ni CAL, JM Enriquez, Cosmo in Tears, Sachi Tsuzaka, Shiro Dos, Anne Agapito, Zarry Salvan, Rebel Heart, and Lady X. | via JV Mahilum, THE SIZZLERS

| via Angelo Madrideo, THE SIZZLERS
