FROM DUST, FOR HEAVEN

ASH WEDNESDAY is an exercise in humility. Putting ash on our forehead in the visible form of a cross is not a display of religious arrogance. It does not say, “I am holier than thou.” On the contrary, it says, “I am a sinner, I am broken. And I need a Savior.”

Yes, we came from dust, but we are not only dust. We possess as well the breath of life, the very breath of God. Without that breath, we are nothing, just dust. But with it, “. . . man became a living being.”

That is the good news! Yes, earthly life ends with death, but eternal life follows soon after, for those who lived in friendship with God.

ASH WEDNESDAY is an act of humility but also a reminder of our dignity. We are made from dust, but we are made for heaven. We are to be humble that our origin is dust, but we are to be proud—for our destiny is heaven. Remembering this makes for a good Christian spirituality.
