August 18 • Roderick Flores
Today we remember a Bosconian hero, Roderick Flores. Here is the article of the former Rector Major, Fr. Pascual Chávez Villanueva SDB, published in the Italian Salesian Bulletin on July 2004, titled "FRUITS OF THE PREVENTIVE SYSTEM", about Flores:
Roderick, known as Erick to his friends, was 15 years old, and similar to Dominic Savio, he possessed spiritual maturity. He embodied Don Bosco’s idea perfectly: "Show me a boy who goes to confession and communion and he won’t cause you any problems…"
During a three-day camp, the scouts from Don Bosco Technical College in Mandaluyong, Philippines, found themselves in a situation. On the afternoon of August 18, 1984, seniors Roderick and Benedict observed two junior scouts struggling with cramps while swimming. They immediately leaped into action, reaching the distressed juniors. Unfortunately, a strong current carried them farther away. At this point, Erick also experienced cramps. Benedict managed to guide him and one of the others to the bank before returning for the remaining scout, who desperately clung to him, pulling them both underwater. Seeing the dire situation, Erick selflessly plunged back into the turbulent waters to assist. He reached them, successfully saving them, but was then swept away by a massive wave, never to return. His lifeless body was eventually recovered on August 25, a week after that fateful day.
While his passing brought immense sorrow, Erick's death illuminated the finest attributes of the educational and pastoral community. Everyone recognized that Don Bosco had given rise to a hero. How was it possible for an ordinary boy to exhibit such extraordinary behavior—risking his own life to save another? Monsignor Panfilo, rector, confessor, and friend of Erick, commented: "Flores isn't a hero solely because he bravely dived in to rescue someone in danger last Saturday. This action marked the culmination of a lengthy sequence of countless selfless acts spanning his 15-year life. He is a hero because he embraced the disciplines of service, love, and generosity. I venture to suggest that he was destined to die a hero… From 1977 until his passing, Erick attended Mass in our chapel at 5:30 or 6:00 in the afternoon. Additionally, every Sunday, he partook in confession… He viewed the sacrament as not only a means of purification, but also a way to grow, to strengthen his love for the Lord, and to enhance himself."
Erick delighted in sports, dancing, and strolling with friends. At school, he consistently received commendations for his good behavior. One of his routines was visiting the Blessed Sacrament in the Institute's small chapel before lessons commenced. He is memorialized as a sincere, well-groomed, handsome, and intelligent young man. He was affiliated with the electronics department and was a member of a group named "430 SLC," likening themselves to the high-quality and excellence of the Mercedes Benz automobile.
