June 5 is #WorldEnvironmentDay. 🌱 Several areas in the #Philippines are under a state of calamity due to the El Niño. The World Food Programme is working with the Department of Social Welfare and Development and the Department of Agriculture - Philippines on Project LAWA or Local Adaptation to Water Access. 💧 Under Project LAWA, communities build small farm reservoirs to catch and store water. Every morning, Annie rises early to prepare breakfast for her family before heading out with her husband to tend to their farm. 🌟🌱 It used to be hard for them to transport their harvests because of the lack of roads. Through the support of Japan, Annie and her community worked to build and rehabilitate farm-to-market roads under WFP's Food Assistance for Assets programme. This ensures that their produce would reach the markets faster, safer, and easier. 👩🏽‍🌾⚒ For Annie, the 50kg iron-fortified rice she received monthly for three months was a big help. #ProjectLAWA World Water Day 🌊
The World Food Programme is working with the Department of Social Welfare and Development and the Department of Agriculture – Bureau of Soils and Water Management 🤝🏼 to anticipate the impact of dry spells and drought-like conditions through the Local Adaptation to Water Access Project (#ProjectLAWA). 🌊 Launched in three pilot sites: Antique, Davao de Oro, and Ifugao, participating communities built small farm reservoirs that save rainwater. These reservoirs can be used for farming 🌱, as water for livestock 💧, and for other household purposes. In Davao de Oro, farmers are also using it as a temporary fishpond to help boost their income. On March 22, learn more about how local communities are preparing for El Niño. 💪🏽

Aisah Manaros is the team leader for the vegetable nursery and road-clearing activities in Barangay Udalo, Piagapo. 👩🏽‍🌾 With the support of Japan, she and her community worked to rehabilitate roads, build nurseries 🌱, and maintain communal irrigation 🌊 under WFP’s Food-for-Assets Programme. Community members received 50kg of iron-fortified rice every month for 3 months. 🍚 According to Aisah, each bag of rice lasts them 25 days- helpful especially for their children who started eating healthier. 🥗 Embassy of Japan in the Philippines 在フィリピン日本国大使館
