ADIDAS -In 2015 Adidas partnered with Parley for the Oceans to turn marine pollution like plastic bottles into shoes and sportswear. Like its Ultraboost and Alphaboost shoes, the two companies have prevented over 2,800 tons of plastic from reaching the ocean. Plastic bottles that contain PET are broken down into plastic flakes then cut into small resin pellets. These pellets are melted to create a filament, which is spun into what Adidas calls Ocean Plastic, a replacement for virgin polyester. Each item in the Parley collection is made of at least 75% recycled plastic. Adidas is also developing a 100% recyclable shoe called Futurecraft Loop, which is expected to be available in 2021.

NIKE -Nike Flyknit is a lightweight fabric precision engineered with an average of 60% less waste than in traditional footwear upper manufacturing. Each shoe upper made from Flyknit contains 6–7 plastic bottles. Their recycled polyester is made from plastic bottles which are cleaned, shredded into flakes, converted into pellets and then spun into a high-quality yarn. In addition to reducing waste, recycled poly lowers carbon emissions by up to 30% compared to virgin poly, and diverts an average of 1 billion plastic bottles annually from landfills and waterways.

PUMA -The Puma and First Mile programme has diverted about 40 tonnes of plastic waste from landfills and oceans, just for the products made for 2020. This roughly translates into 1,980,286 plastic bottles being reused,” said Stefan Seidel, head of corporate sustainability for Puma. German sportswear brand Puma has launched a collection made with recycled plastic in collaboration with UK-based waste management and recycling company First Mile. The co-branded sustainable line will sell footwear and apparel made from recycled yarn manufactured from waste plastic bottles.

PET plastic bottles containing water, pop, juices and other liquids are labelled with the resin identification code No. 1 within the recycling logo to indicate their high value in the reprocess industry, St. Godard said.

“They hold their value well. Plastic recyclers want them. It’s important they get them cleaned, so all of the beverage is actually vacated out of the bottle and they get an empty container,” said St. Godard.
The Continuous Improvement Fund (CIF) Ontario Price Sheet contains monthly spot market prices for various recyclable materials in various municipalities. Produced by Reclay StewardEdge Inc., the CIF helps distributes the report.
The average price for PET (mixed) in July was C$295 per metric tonne, while HDPE (mixed) yielded C$470 per metric tonne.
St. Godard noted the PET resin has held its worth “very, very well” over the years, which is only behind aluminum and newspaper in terms of the most valuable packaging in the blue box.
“They are coveted by the industry and fairly universally accepted in all blue boxes or as part of a return program across the country. The more rigid plastics tend to be much, much more recyclable,” said. St. Godard.
