LOOK | SPORTS: The country’s face of skateboarding, Cebuana Margielyn Didal is hyped to be back in action, this time with fellow Cebuano skateboarder Motic Panugalinog who is making a debut in the Asian Games in Hangzhou, China on September 26,2023.

Didal rose to fame when she won the gold during the skateboarding’s debut in the Asian Games in Indonesia back in 2018.

As she looks back, Didal said, a lot has changed and it’s all for the better.

“I’m hype and excited for the this Asian Games…Last Asian Games kay daghan nausab in good way…Daghan kaayo na maayong nausab sukad pagdaog nako atong 2018 Asian Games dili lng sa akoa pati pud sa skate scene sa Pinas ug nausab ilang pag tan-aw sa mga skaters,” Didal told The Freeman.

Six years after that historic outing though, Didal’s hometown, Cebu City still has no skate park nor Cebu having a standard skate park.

Yet, it is interesting to note that another Cebu City-native, Motic Panugalinog also gets to represent the Philippines in this year’s Asiad.

“It's a good thing nga ang Skate Pilipinas na team kay nagkadago ug mas mudako pa in the future and ato nalang ani kay pagsupport sa kani nga sport pamaagi sa paghimo ug proper skateparks…Dili lng basta-basta nga tukod-tukod lang kay naa man standards ug sizes and proper nga pag butang sa mga obstacles kay para pud magamit sa mga kabataan,” Didal, the first Filipino skateboarding that also made it to the Olympics back in 2020 in Tokyo, Japan.

Without a proper skate park here, Didal had to make do with the little time training abroad.

That little time spent for training, however, took its toll when Didal suffered a major ankle injury 11 months ago.

Didal is just lucky to have her major sponsors including Red Bull and New Balance still with her and helped her get back on her feet again.

“Almost 11 months since sa akong opera pero happy ko nga nakaskate ko ug balik before Asian Games para maka represent ko para sa Pilipinas labi na para sa Lahug,Cebu City,” said Didal.

Didal will try to defend her Asian Games gold in the womens street skate category anew while the men’s side will have Panugalinog and Mak Feliciano.

“Nagpasalamat ko sa Ginoo kay bisan pa nga na Injured ko kay nakabalik gehapon ko ug duwa ug padayun gehapon ang pag represent sa Pinas ug sa Cebu…Daghang salamat kaayo sa mga nag supporta…Padayun gihapon ta kay bisag layo pa layo naman pud ta!!!” ended Didal.

Meanwhile, Panugalinog, a daredevil in skateboarding while having his final training in Thailand before going to China also told The Freeman that he will try his best in today’s battle.

“I’ll try my best…Dakuy nani nga chances, “ Panugalinog, a resident of Inayawan said.

Both Panugalinog and Didal will have their qualification round today and hopefully make it to the final 8 tomorrow, Sept.27.
