PHL-made attack crafts tested in naval exercises
Philippine-made multi-purpose attack crafts (MPAC) fired surface-to-air Spike-Extended Range missiles in live demonstrations during the sea phase of the Philippine Fleet’s Exercise Pagbubuklod 2023 on Wednesday.
The MPAC, one of the signature vessels of local marine solutions provider Propmech Corp., has been outfitted with defense capabilities in collaboration with the Philippine
Navy (PN).
The MPAC units were designed and supplied by Propmech Corporation. Three MPAC units were among the maritime assets tested for interoperability and multiple capabilities at the annual unilateral exercises held off the waters of Capones Island in San Antonio, Zambales.
The first test-firing of a surface-to-surface Rafael Advanced Defense Ltd. Spike-ER missile outfitted in a Mark III MPAC unit took place in August 2018. The 17-meter long and 4.76-meter wide (breadth) MPACs are high-speed naval crafts capable of speeds in excess of 40 knots. Its current PN design has a maximum speed of 45 knots.
Since the MPAC was commissioned in April 2009, its units have been used for hundreds of mission hours performing a wide range of tasks, including rescue operations, logistical support and combat missions.
Today, with full ballistic protection, MPACs are armed with .50-caliber machine guns along with the Spike ER missile platform.
The Philippine government has acquired 12 MPACs, which underwent five design improvements in 2012, 2017, and 2019.
There are currently three distinct MPAC improvements, including Mark II and Mark III, in service with the PN, which have proven their reliability and versatility in various applications, including counterterrorism and territorial defense.
