Stronger. Together. We can create MAGIC.

During the first six months of quarantine imposed by the Philippine government due to Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, a significant decline has been observed in the country's crime rate. The Philippine National Police (PNP) has listed eight focus crimes which are murder, homicide, physical injury, r**e, robbery, theft, carnapping of motorcycles, and carnapping of vehicles.
Approximately 16,879 crime incidents have occured from March 17 to September 16, 2020 which translates to a drop of roughly 47% from the previously recorded crime incidents last September 15, 2019 to March 16, 2020 which count to 31,661. This means that an average of 92 cases per day occur during the lockdown compared to 172 before the lockdown.
Carnapping of motorcycles or motorcycle theft has the greatest drop of all the eight focus crimes. From 2,013 cases before the lockdown, it went down 66% or 693 cases during the lockdown. This does not make a huge difference to the decline of 61% in car theft which went down to 86 cases during quarantine from 218 in the pre-quarantine.
The other six focus crimes' rates had also experienced a drop in number of cases. These are robbery by 61%, or from 4,807 to 1,867; theft by 60%, or from 10,553 to 4,228; physical injury by 38%, or from 5,474 to 3,418; homicide by 25%, or from 819 to 612; r**e by 24%, or from 4,580 to 3,446; and murder by 22%, or from 3,197 to 2,509.
People were required to stay at home to control the transmission of the virus that causes COVID-19. Fewer people go in the streets which mostly consist of "essential" workers that work in medical, transportation, food production, and peace and security fields and this resulted for crime volume to be at its lowest according to Lt. Gen. Guillermo Eleazar, deputy chief for administration of PNP.
Checkpoints at every border across the country, according to the police officer, have also aided in the detection of illicit activity and the arrest of offenders.
The said decline in the country's crime rate is assumed to positively affect the Philippines' ranking in the next law and order survey of US-based analytics and advisory firm, Gallup.

Amidst the COVID 19 outbreak, over 25 million students were enrolled, comprising more than 90% of last academic year's number of enrollees. Although face to face classes were prohibited, blended learning approaches were prompted, with television and radio-based learning, modular, and online set-ups as the three main options.
No student left behind— the battle cry of every Filipino student and educator suffering from the great crisis this pandemic had caused. In lieu of this, education officials gathered all the possible means to ensure the safe "Balik Eskwela" of the students, and DepEd TV is one of the given courses of action to deal with the current adversities.
The Department of Education (DepEd), with the help of Philippine Communications Operations Office (PCOO), have released the country's educational channel that features various subjects for over 22 million enrollees for 2020-2021 academic year. DepEd TV can be watched on GMA Affordabox and GMA Now since the channel has its partnership with GMA Network, and on BEAM TV of channel 31.
Meanwhile, reports of errors and inaccuracies in some of the episodes of DepEd TV have been collated during the first week of launching. Out of 111 video episodes, two were said to be erroneous, specifically in Mathematics and Araling Panlipunan subjects. However, Education Undersecretary Alain Pascua emphasized that the two episodes had been taken down and were replaced by corrected contents, even after over 22 million public school students' education were put into risk. Moreover, the struggles of DepEd TV teacher-broadcasters that were not depicted on-screen, such as the lack of equipment, production budget, as well as the other difficulties of producing television episodes.
The coronavirus outbreak turned the table of situations that were hard to imagine before. No one has been fortunate since the pandemic meddle in our old normal days. But in this time of difficulty, we are hungry for the authorities' better actions and initiatives, not the additional delinquency of culpable administrations.

When the CoVid 19 pandemic struck last year, it forced an unprecedented global shutdown. It pushed us to alter our daily routines and made the officials think of various strategies for containing the spread of the virus. And because of that, playing sports in this pandemic are highly prohibited to ensure the safety of the athletes. The sports industry was severely affected during the coronavirus outbreak that caused several suspensions of sporting events, contact, and non-contact sports.
After the government officials decided to ease some restrictions, the Philippine Basketball Association decided to continue to start its 45th season inside a 'bubble.' This was inspired after the NBA continued their 2019-2020 season inside a 'bubble' in Disney World in Orlando, Florida. The concept of a 'bubble' is to put all participating athletes in one place and compete away from the general public.
Meanwhile, the 2020 Summer Olympics, which was supposed to open on July 24, 2020, was also put on hold. It became a big controversy whether to stop, postpone, or continue the games despite having a public health danger to the citizens of Japan. However, the Olympic officials still decided to pursue the multi-sport event that will finally start on July 23, 2021.
And because of this unforeseen CoVid 19 pandemic, several sports television programs, and sports channels faced a big problem: There are no games to put on the air. That's why most of them were forced to suspend their operation. From March 30 to June 14, 2020, One Sports suspended its broadcast, and Sports Desk from CNN Philippines halted its productions, but the news segment on various newscasts continued to air.
This pandemic truly shattered the whole sports industry. And as most of the sports worldwide begin its journey back to what it used to be, it gives hope to all the people around the world that this pandemic will surely come to an end.

A study was made that includes college students indicating that a higher level of social media use was associated with worse mental health?
The study indicated that more exposure to disaster news, e.g., COVID-19 via social media was associated with greater depression for the participants with high levels of disaster stressors.
Despite the importance of the media in spreading urgent information during times of collective trauma, numerous studies have suggested that disaster media exposure may evoke poor mental health outcomes.
These claims were supported by The Differential Susceptibility to Media Effects Model (Valkenburg and Peter), DSMM is a well established model that addresses relationships between media use and health outcomes.
Social media is indeed a great platform for us to get and disseminate more information, especially during these trying times. However, the misinformation and disinformation surrounding COVID-19 ranging from false and misleading “Chinese Virus”narrative to using disinfectants to “cure” COVID-19 has affected individuals’ mental health and physical health.
While staying up to date on local and national news, especially as it mandates and health updates, is critical during this time, experts say over consumption of the news can really take a toll on your physical and most especially, mental health.
Like a lot of things, the key to staying healthy is “MODERATION”, below are some tips for managing news:
- Limit your time
- Schedule a worry time
- Gauge how you feel before and after watching the news.
- Visit and watch reliable news outlet

In the current crisis caused by Covid-19, media has again stood out as being an essential medium to stay informed. In the fight against Covid-19, the media became a crucial tool for the government. The rapid dissemination of topics and information related to COVID-19 has affected the behavior of the public.
In the Philippines situation in times of crisis where there is a threat to public health on this scale, governments are allowed, and often required, to take more restrictive measures than they would in normal times. However, government seem to be using the Coronavirus outbreak as an opportunity to further entrench repressive measures, and far overreach the limits in place. Press freedom further suffered a hit during the coronavirus pandemic, with more restrictive measures against media entities through intimidation, surveillance, and other tactics, a report said. This comes alongside the tagging of reporters and activists critical of the government as members of the communist New People's Army (NPA). The limits on public participation are becoming increasingly common. Journalist who are critical of government face possible arrest and those without government-issued IDs can be prevented from covering news outside their homes.
In China, the truth was unfold. Chinese Government faced two major challenges; The virus and a wave of voices. Li Wenliang was a Chinese ophthalmologist known for raising awareness of early COVID-19 infections in Wuhan. Dr. Li raised the alarm about novel coronavirus on December 30th when he sent a message to his medical school alumni group warning them to wear protective clothing due to the patients diagnosed with SARS-like illnesses. The message went viral on Weibo, China’s version of Twitter. Chinese Government accused him of "rumor-mongering" and tried to silence him by ordering him to sign a letter. Even the Media that covers the news was ordered to delete their copies. Chinese Government did not alert the World Health Organisation (WHO) about the new illness until the end of December.
On his death due to the virus, WHO tweeted: "We are deeply saddened by the passing of Dr. Li Wenliang. We all need to celebrate work that he did on ."
The speedy spread of this infection globally became a source of public worry and several unknowns regarding this new pathogen created a state of panic. Media became the major source of it. To win the war against Covid-19, respect and unity is the solution towards victory.

After the fallout of the COVID-19 crisis, the media industry had itself affected and thus adjusting to the new normal, giving birth to the age of the "Lockdown Generation".
According to a study by The Huddle Room (2020), "Media Habits in the New Normal", during the Enhanced Community Quarantine in Luzon and other sections of Visayas and Mindanao, it is revealed that:
96% increased usage of entertainment platforms during the lockdown, such as Facebook (including messenger), YouTube, Netflix, IG, and Television.
Access to news and information posted a 90% increase with top sources, coming from Facebook, Television, Youtube, social media pages of newspapers, and radio.
An overwhelming majority, 70% feel that their current media habits will remain after the lockdown period.
More than 60% of the respondents answered that they are not comfortable traveling even if the lockdown has lifted.
Despite opportunities, challenges arose and had far-reaching effects on media and entertainment. For example, during the pandemic, there was a major shortfall in revenue from events due to widespread postponement and cancellation of small and large events. Also, because of restrictions and limited movements and gatherings, it decreased entertainment spending outside the home. Lastly, advertising spending was also affected.
Because of these events, the media industry was forced to conform to changes and generate a "new normal" adapting to the new realities to maintain its services.
The question is: What are the adjustments and new methods that the media industry such as television, radio, and online media do to cope with the new normal?

At the beginning of the Corona Virus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, the world sought answers to the baffling origin and cause of the said pandemic. With various theories and hypotheses, definitive answers were less likely to be found easily. But facts about the COVID-19 pandemic as we know it today were mostly told by a collaborative effort of journalists, media practitioners, and experts.
One of the most notable investigations on the COVID-19 origin was by Liz Hayes, an Australian journalist who interviewed numerous experts on the field of medicine, health, and science. Though there was not a definitive conclusion about the virus’ origin, some probable theories and explanations were discussed.
Experts interviewed by Hayes speculated that the Corona Virus came from the f***s of bats in a mining cave in China, which after a study was found positive of the virus that infected three miners in 2012. Another expert said that the pandemic was a result of a viral leak from Wuhan Institute of Virology of a similar virus that infected miners years earlier. It has also been found out that scientists from the said institute were working on a “gain of function” biological engineering, which produced a highly dangerous virus, and which by accident was leaked out of the laboratory.
Loose Women, a British talk show, also interviewed Dr. Li-Meng Yan, a Chinese Virologist who claimed that the corona virus situation was covered up by the Chinese Government through withholding important and crucial information about the said virus. Dr. Yan also expressed through the said show that the virus did not come from the Wuhan Wet Market.
Numerous information and theories alike about the cause and origin of COVID-19 continue to baffle most of the people from all around the world. Yet, media practitioners and journalists globally, through endless efforts of in-depth investigations and interviews, continue to primarily provide the world with necessary facts about the virus that would help the world cope, mitigate, and eventually end the pandemic.
