On this day 51 years ago, then Philippine president Ferdinand Marcos Sr. made the decision to declare Martial Law. This decision would eventually give way to one of the most definitive yet darkest moments in our country’s history. In the 14 years that Martial Law stood, thousands of innocent Filipinos were tortured, killed, and incarcerated. The period was one of corruption, social injustice, theft, corruption, oppression, and coercion.

The UP Alpha Sigma Fraternity, on this 51st anniversary of the declaration of Martial Law, honors those who fought for truth and for justice at the expense of their lives. We commemorate the sacrifices of our countrymen for it is in their decision to fight against the Marcos regime that the generations that followed need not live their life in constant fear. We most especially remember the lives of our brothers Billy Begg, Joey Calderon, Jess Fernandez, Abe Padilla, and Tony Tagamolila, recognized in the Bantayog ng mga Bayani. Our brothers were among the thousands of heroes who fought for peace and justice, even though there was no guarantee they themselves would be there to witness it. In line with the fraternity’s values of Humanitarian Service and Nationalism, we stand with the Filipino people in remembering the legacies of these heroes, and continuing to fight their battles against oppression and injustice today.

“Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it.” - George Santayana

In Truth-Reason-Justice, Never Forget! Never again to Martial Law!

Staying true to our highest goal of humanitarian service, The UP Alpha Sigma Fraternity Manila conducted its yearly outreach project, the Toy For Totoy last December 18, 2022.

In the spirit of Christmas, the fraternity donated groceries, essential goods, toys, and spent joyful time with the children at Concordia Children’s Services in Sta. Mesa. We would like to express our deepest gratitude to Concordia Children’s Services for their hospitality, and for providing the venue for our outreach.

Fifty years ago, Former President Ferdinand Marcos Sr. declared Martial Law; an event that would mark the beginning of a brutal reign of terror and one of the darkest periods in Philippine history. In the 14 years that Martial Law stood, the heinous dictator’s regime was responsible for over 3,000 known extrajudicial killings, 35,000 documentented tortures, 77 disappeared, and 70,000 incarcerations, while simultaneously plundering the country’s economy—burying the nation in debt of over 25 billion dollars. For our countrymen, the period was one of bloodshed, corruption, human rights violations and tyranny, but for those in power, it was a period of luxury, wealth, and prosperity.

Fifty years later, the same family has risen back to power with Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. taking the seat as President. When asked about the horrors and treacheries of his father’s regime, the President on multiple occasions, has denied responsibility for his family’s wrongdoings and continues to defend his father’s legacy. Despite that, however, conversations about forgiveness and moving on from the past have become a dominant and occurring rhetoric.

On the 50th anniversary of Martial Law, The UP Alpha Sigma Fraternity commemorates the bravery and sacrifice of the thousands who fought for truth and justice. We vehemently reject and condemn the ongoing narrative of simply moving on and forgetting the past, most especially when accountability continues to be dismissed, and when historical facts are being twisted to further enshrine the former dictator and his family in a positive light.

The UP Alpha Sigma fraternity stood with the Filipino people against tyranny in the past, and will continue to do so today. Our brothers Billy Begg, Joey Calderon, Jess Fernandez, Abe Padilla, and Tony Tagamolila were among the heroes recognized in the Bantayog ng mga Bayani, laying down their lives for our country and for the people. We honor the bravery and sacrifice of our brothers, and of the thousands who were martyred for the sake of truth and justice. In accordance with our values of Nationalism and Humanitarian Service, we stand with the Filipino people in the struggle against oppression, human rights violations, and attempts at rewriting history to favor the interests of those in power.

Now more than ever, we must never forget the atrocities and abuses committed under Martial Law, so that they will never happen again. On this 50th anniversary of Martial Law, we call upon the Filipino people to remember the injustices of the past, and to never allow such evil to reign again.

In Truth-Reason-Justice, Never Forget!
Never Again to Martial Law!

Facts and documented accounts are oftentimes manipulated to control narratives, resulting in the spread of misinformation that is exploited by many for political and personal gain.

UNITY STATEMENT OF UP MANILA STUDENT FORMATIONS ON MARCOS-DUTERTE TANDEM ON 2022 NATIONAL ELECTIONS

We, the undersigned UP Manila student organizations, fraternities, sororities, councils, and publications from UP Manila, strongly condemn the Marcos-Duterte tandem to vie for the two highest executive positions in the 2022 National Elections.

Contrary to her previous statement of not running for a national position, Sara Duterte filed her certificate of candidacy for Vice-President in the 2022 National Elections under LAKAS-CMD last November 13, during the second to the last day of deadline for substitution. She will be running alongside Ferdinand Marcos Jr. as Presidential candidate.

This only reveals the true intentions of these two families to cling to authority. With Marcos Jr. 's another desperate attempt to bring his family back to power while Sara Duterte attempts at the preservation of the Duterte family to power and protection of his father from all possible consequences due to his human rights violations, the Filipino masses are in danger of being denied democracy and true justice.

It should not come as a surprise that such political dynasties unite when they recognize the threat of collective action of the masses. The people were not blind to Marcos’ misinformation campaign, the Martial Law that caused the grave history of human rights violations, and the family’s numerous cases of graft and corruption among others. Dutertes, on the other hand, are no different from executing numerous human rights violations. Especially in the midst of a pandemic where health measures were of utmost necessity, the regime only resorted to using brute force and violence towards its people.

Sara Duterte, along with other candidates’ substitution, not only compromises the integrity of the electoral process, but it is also deceitful to the masses who await for a true candidate that is capable of bringing pro-people projects and campaigns. The election may not be the ultimate solution to all the social problems the Filipino masses are facing, but it greatly impacts how our nation will change and progress; what and how will the policies be implemented.

It is now up to us to continue exposing these families’ atrocities and their qualities that make them not fit for the leadership of our nation. We must remain vigilant to the plots these families might cause, as we continue to resist their return to power. Our choice who to vote in the 2022 national elections is one of our greatest opportunities to simultaneously remove the Marcos and Duterte families from office. We must also remember that we have the capacity to oust any dictator who would attempt to rob us, Filipino people, of our freedom. Together, we are united in safeguarding our nation’s democracy and amplifying our calls for justice.

No to Marcos-Duterte in the 2022 National Elections!

UNITY STATEMENT OF UP MANILA STUDENT FORMATIONS ON OPPOSING BONGBONG MARCOS’ PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDACY

We, the undersigned UP Manila student organizations, fraternities, sororities, councils, and publications, vehemently oppose the nomination of Bongbong Marcos into the Presidency for the 2022 elections.

The Marcos dictatorship unleashed unbridled violence and repression against students and ordinary citizens. The imposition of Martial Law led to the dissolution of institutions such as student organizations, councils, and publications. The relentless human rights violations have caused trauma to the Filipino people and haunt the victims even to this day. We still pay for the astronomical debt that Marcos accumulated for two decades.

The power-hungry Marcos family will always jump at any opportunity to reclaim authority. The family continuously denies their involvement in graft and corruption despite the numerous guilty verdicts in US courts and the Sandiganbayan.

We have seen Bongbong Marcos and his desperate attempts to win a position in the government. His loss in the Vice-Presidential bet last 2016 and loss from election challenge in the Supreme Court did not stop him from running for office once again. BBM has no significant achievements on his own and only exploits the so-called accomplishments of the older Marcos to gather support from his audience.

Meanwhile, we also witness the attempt of the Duterte family to cling to power. We have already seen a war against the people through the Oplan Tokhang from his first year in office, the Martial Law in Mindanao, political killings in the countryside and cities, and the criminal negligence shown during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Since then, there have been intensifying attacks on human rights. Amid a pandemic that punishes the Filipino people in almost all aspects, Duterte was only keen on spreading fear and terror through militarization instead of providing appropriate measures and medical solutions.

He plans to run as a Vice Presidential candidate to avoid the prosecution against him in the International Criminal Court. Another Duterte, through Sara Duterte, also plans to run for office as a presidential candidate.

We acknowledge the sacrifices of past student leaders and the masses to bring back these institutions that eventually paved the way for the overthrow of the Marcos dictatorship. We will learn from history and vow that we will oppose the Marcos family’s return to power at every step of the way.

We also oppose the Duterte family’s bid to stay in authority. We must contend that a position in office is not a family heirloom but rather a call to serve the people. We cannot go back to the dark times of Martial Law.

Enough is enough!

No to Bongbong Marcos!
Resist Historical Revisionism!
Fight Tyranny!
