On Easter Sunday, we celebrate the resurrection of Jesus Christ. It's a day of profound reflection, gratitude, and renewal of faith, as we gather in prayerful communion to commemorate the ultimate sacrifice and the promise of eternal life. Indeed He is Risen!
Mark 16:6
"'Don't be alarmed,' he said. 'You are looking for Jesus the Nazarene, who was crucified. He has risen!"
It is a day of solemn reflection and mourning, as it commemorates the time when Jesus Christ's body lay in the tomb after his crucifixion. It is called "Black" Saturday because it marks a period of darkness and sorrow before the joyous celebration of Easter Sunday, when Christians believe Jesus rose from the dead, bringing hope and redemption to the world. Catholics honor the profound mystery of Christ's death and await with steadfast hope the dawn of new life and the triumph of light over darkness.
1 Corinthians 15:17
"And if Christ has not been raised, your faith is futile and you are still in your sins."
John 20:19-23
On the evening of that day, the first day of the week, the doors being locked where the disciples were for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood among them and said to them, "Peace be with you." When he had said this, he showed them his hands and his side. Then the disciples were glad when they saw the Lord. Jesus said to them again, "Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, even so I am sending you." And when he had said this, he breathed on them and said to them, "Receive the Holy Spirit. If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven them; if you withhold forgiveness from any, it is withheld."
In the Liturgy of the Word, we journey through sacred narratives, finding solace, wisdom, and hope in the comforting truths and profound insights of scripture.
In the presence of the cross, we are invited to reflect deeply on the enormity of Christ's love for us, manifested in His willingness to endure suffering and death on our behalf. Each gesture of veneration, whether a gentle touch or a heartfelt prayer, becomes a testament to our gratitude and devotion to the One who bore our sins upon that rugged tree.
In the reverent procession of Santo Entierro, we embark on a sacred journey alongside Mary, the Mother of Jesus, as she walks the path of her seven sorrows. Through the Seven Sorrows of Mary, we are reminded of the human experience of loss, sorrow, and despair, but we are also offered the promise of hope, redemption, and ultimate victory through the resurrection of Christ.
As we begin on the Via Crucis, we walk the path of sacrifice and redemption, reflecting on the journey of Christ. As we pause at each station, we're reminded of the profound love that led to ultimate sacrifice and the everlasting hope it brings. May this journey deepen our faith, renew our spirits, and inspire us to carry the light of compassion and forgiveness in our own lives.
It's a time to pause and reflect on the ultimate act of love and sacrifice, as Jesus washed the feet of his disciples, setting an example of humility and service for all. There's a call to examine our own lives, to consider how we can embody these values of compassion, forgiveness, and selflessness in our own actions.
Luke 22:19-20
"And he took bread, gave thanks and broke it, and gave it to them, saying, 'This is my body given for you; do this in remembrance of me.' In the same way, after the supper he took the cup, saying, 'This cup is the new covenant in my blood, which is poured out for you."
Rejoice and wave your palms high as we commemorate Palm Sunday, the beginning of Holy Week, marking Jesus' triumphant entry into Jerusalem. Let us reflect on the significance of this day, embracing the spirit of hope, renewal, and the journey towards Easter's promise of redemption. ๐ฟ
โHosanna! Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lordโthe King of Israel!โ
- John 12:13
Palm Sunday, officially referred to as Palm Sunday of the Lordโs Passion, marks the beginning of the Christian Holy Week, commemorating Jesusโ triumphant entrance into Jerusalem before his arrest, crucifixion, and resurrection.
In most churches, palms are blessed and used in processions, but the core of the liturgy is a lengthy reading of the Passion, often with parts taken by the priest, lectors, and the whole congregation. It is in this reading where we find the passages of the Gospel of Matthew narrating how palm branches were placed in Jesusโ path and waived at him as he entered the city. Christian iconography would then use the image of the palm branch (or palm leaves) to represent the victory of martyrs, Jesus himself being the martyr par excellence. After the liturgy, Catholics take their palms home to serve as sacramentals. Next year, they will be burned to serve as the ashes for Ash Wednesday. But how long have Christians included palms in their liturgical commemoration of the beginning of the Holy Week?
According to records, by the 8th century the liturgy of Passion Sunday was already quite elaborate. People would take their palms to a first church where the liturgy would begin, would walk in procession to a second church were the blessing of the palms took place, then returned to the first church where finally three deacons would read (chant, actually) the Passion. Of course, consequent renovations of the liturgy would modify this celebration throughout the centuries, finally arriving to the canonical form used today.
