๐ผ What Does a Conductor Do?
The Role of a conductor in an ensemble can not be overemphasized. An ensemble of singers is known as choir, chorale or chorus. Choir, chorale and chorus mean the same thing, they only differ in usage. An ensemble of instrumentalists could be orchestra, symphonic band, brass band, depending on the instruments involved.
A conductor is a professional or non-professional musician charged with the job of directing an ensemble. There are many roles of a conductor in an ensemble. In the musical chain, the conductor is found between the composer and the musicians, and finally, the audience.
โจComposerโConductorโMusiciansโAudienceโฆ
This therefore, brings us to the question: "What does a Conductor do? A conductor:
1. Selects Voices and Arranges Them into Parts
The conductor, having known the range of voices will select the voices and arrange them into parts. It could be SSA for female and young voices, SATB for female and male voices (mixed choir), and TTBB for male voices. S = soprano, A = alto, T = tenor, and B = bass. Soprano has the range of C4 โ A6 or C6 of the grand piano. Alto range = F4 โ F6, tenor range = C3 โ G4 and bass = E2 โE4.
2. Chooses Repertoires
A conductor is vested with the power of choosing the right repertoires for the ensemble. The wrong choice of music is the downfall of many conductors. A conductor must consider the choirโs ability โ when in doubt, the simpler the piece, the better. A conductor pays attention to the choirโs strengths and weaknesses.
A typical church choir for instance, is a mix of trained and untrained voices, talented and non-trained singers. A good conductor chooses songs that match the available talents. The choir directorโs ambition must fit the choirโs ability. The best way is to choose the pieces and study them before teaching the choir.
3. Interprets Scores
A conductor is in the position to interpret composers' score. Score is the written form of musical compositions, showing all instrumental and vocal parts below each other. There are a few systems of notations for composers to present their thoughts in hard or soft copies so that musicians (conductors) can interpret and perform.
The works of conductors include bringing the music back to life by interpreting the composerโs score to the performers, adding more vibes to it especially if there is no dynamics marks, which will eventually bring the passion and intensity out of the performance. Most conductors are adaptors/arrangers/composers. They bring the music back to life just the way the composer imagined, breathe new life into it and express it the way it should, thereby portraying the right mood/feeling to the audience.
Conducting is about teaching not preaching. As a conductor, you must be able to teach the performers. You must teach the technical aspects of the music and teach the performers the general vibe of the piece. Sometimes, in the process of interpreting a piece, transcription and translation set in.
4. Manages Rehearsals
Rehearsals are done in preparation for performances. A lot of time must be spent on fixing performance technical issues and less on the actual interpretation. During these rehearsals, here are some things to be aware of: balancing, dynamics, intonation, tuning of instrument (if it has to do with instruments), and interpretation by the singers/players.
Ask the singer/players to listen closely to each other in their sections and try to match the sound they hear. Encourage uniform pronunciation of vowels and consonants and work hard on group phrasing. Also important is getting your choir to sing in tune. Intonation is a challenge even for professional choirs. It pays to spend a larger amount of rehearsal time working through intonation exercises.
To be able to deliver a convincing performance to the audience, ensure that each singer/instrument player can interpret as well. Ensure that each performer/section/part is given the opportunity to sight-read, practise/rehearse and learn the communicating and aesthetic purposes of any given piece. Start each rehearsal with at least 15 minutes of basic vocal/instrumental exercises to get the body and the singerโs voices and brains ready for singing. Ensure everyone is working as part of a team.
5. Regulates Performances
During performances, the conductor is the regulator. He /she does this by using proper conducting techniques. Firstly, he/she must decide whether to conduct using a baton or not. There is no hard and fast rule on this, a good conductor can get the desired results with or without a baton. Itโs a matter of what works for the conductor but, a conductor must practice and master all the time signature shapes. The accuracy of the shapes, consistency and speed as well as how a conductor accurately and consistently sticks to his/her bounce point is important.
Secondly, a conductor needs to employ proper conducting technique. That means using the right hand only to define the beat and not mirroring beat patterns with both hands. It also means conducting the beats, not the rhythm โ keeping of straight beat is what a good conductor must do. A conductor uses his/her right hand (with or without baton) to conduct proper beat patterns and free up his/her left hand for other musical gestures such as conducting dynamics, cues, phrasing and so on.
The art of cueing in is also important. Cueing in performers before the actual time is important because if you cue them in at the moment they are supposed to play or sing, you'd be late. The idea of cueing in is to prepare the performers.
Remember the key to conducting is leadership. To ensure accuracy of the shape, consistency and speed as earlier emphasized, a conductor must employ a conducting technique known as โhot stove techniqueโ in the practice of the shapes of the various time signatures. Imagine touching a hot stove with your bare hands, you would immediately jump your hands off. โHot stove techniqueโ is characterized by this jerking action.
Thirdly, donโt sing along โ what a conductor should avoid doing is singing along with the choir. The bad thing about it is that, the conductor will not be able to hear what the choir is doing over the sound if his/her voice. Focus on the task at hand, which is conducting and leave the singing for the choir but mouthing of the words for purpose of diction and entries/releases may help.
