A fixed bridge can be made out of fun and laughter. Akala ko metal and porcelain compositions lang meron ang dental procedure na ito that calls for accuracy and manual dexterity. There's just no room for error. But when you're treating a high school friend you hadn't seen for decades, it has become a joyful and less exhausting job. There would be gaps in between (pun intended). You pause for a little chat down memory lane when you feel like it. Mawawala sa isip mo na nababawasan na pala ang effect ng anesthesia. Since kaibigan mo naman siya, hindi ka mahihiyang maulit ma-torture by another round of anesthesia 😂. You make up for the lost time at her expense 😂.
In all seriousness, your main goal is to come up with a good bridge work because your livelihood depends on her. Whatever outcome may be, she'll be your walking billboard for your batch 😂. On the first appointment, she left unscathed 😂. After a couple of days, voila! Eto na siya!

How decades of not smiling can affect anyone’s ability to smile. How can anyone redeem his/her loss of confidence and general wellness?

My patient, Mrs. Elena Mendizabal, gave me her permission to share her story. It was 1995 when she last received her dental treatment from her former dentist. It was for teeth extractions. She got married in 2005. Since she started her own family and become a devoted lwife and mother. They were and still are her first priority in life. She didn’t think too much about her needs. Her oral health took a backseat. Only when her children have grown when she has decided to take care of her needs - to redeem her self-confidence - because she realized how much she ignored her oral health. It has taken its toll. It was difficult for her to eat because her gums have receded and her teeth elongated. She can no longer chew her food completely and this resulted to indigestion. She has sacrificed a lot of mouthwatering food which require mastication and/ or trituration.

I want to use this opportunity to thank her for her utmost confidence in me as her dentist - to decide on what’s best for her dental health. This is an honor for all dentists alike.

She was in search of a cheaper set of dentures, so she went to a dental technician who is not concerned about the overall requirement of functional dentures. Dental technicians are not allowed to work on patients. Taking impressions of the client or patient's mouth is unethical and illegal. They are not even allowed to process a denture without the go signal of the dentist. More often
than not, dentures are ill- fitting resulting to a lot oral tissue and jaw problems. Will you sacrifice your health and beauty by going to illegal dental laboratories and fake dentists? They might even charge a higher fee than certified dental practitioners. She wasn’t able to use her dentures to speak and chew because of wrong occlusion, vertical dimension, and centric relation. She thought that she looked like someone with a protruding chin like a famous Filipino celebrity. She didn’t have the energy to look at a mirror and smile. There was no zest for life even more so, when she suffered a stroke around first quarter of 2020. Imagine, she hasn't seen herself in the mirror for 2 years. She said that she had forgotten how to smile because she felt she had lost everything - her confidence and the most important one...health! She had numbed and stiff lips. The muscles weren't fully recovered. There was a prominent deviation of the jaw on the left side. There were a lot of instances wherein she was having a hard time opening her mouth. When she forces to open it, there's a clicking sound and pain. Of course the dentures she's wearing now... just like a baby's first walk, there will be a lot of getting used to it and practice.

Some people don't realize what a difference a smile makes - the effects of having functional, carefully, artistically-made dentures to a person's psyche. Dentists, real ones, don't just make dentures out of profit like illegal ones do.
