Acrochordon. ✨️ Acrochordon or skin tags are benign growths on the skin that usually grows on the creases like the neck and armpits. These are typically small however it can grow to more than an inch big, which we call giant acrochordon. These are not alarming but if the patient gets bothered by them, there are treatment options available for removal such as cauterization or surgical excision. Milia. ✨️ Milia are small, whitish bumps under the skin and are formed when dead skin or other proteins get trapped in small cystic structures. These are usually benign and nothing to worry about but some patients want to have them removed because of their appearance. We can prevent these bumps by gentle exfoliation 1-2x a week, by using a sunscreen and by using retinoid products.

Acne. ✨️ Acne vulgaris (commonly known as acne, breakout, or pimples) is a common skin condition that occurs when follicles become plugged with oil, dead skin and bacterial invasion, and can cause inflammation which could lead to hyperpigmentation and scarring. Our goal is to address the underlying factors such as the plugging of the pores, excess oil production, bacterial involvement and the inflammation.

My patient in the pictures is a 20-year-old female who presented with moderate acne. She has a medium brown skin tone which may be at increased risk for post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation. The plan was to start her with combination therapy and later on added oral medication. She has no other co-morbidities like polycystic ovarian syndrome. After 3 months of treatment, she presented with fewer lesions and mostly hyperpigmentation which we will be addressing in follow-up consultations.

Even though some people feel that 3 months is too long for therapy, we shouldn't rush the treatment process to give time for the skin to heal as well as prevent irritation from the medications. I find that this is a better strategy for long-term management and lesser risk of relapse. The type of treatment depends on the patient's condition and best discussed with the doctor.

Age spots. ✨️ Just like that, it's gone. Age spots are usually found on the face and other sun-exposed areas and could be light brown to dark brown depending on your skin tone. These are mostly harmless spots but could grow larger or darker over time. Left alone, they are usually not dangerous but it's better to check with your dermatologist to rule out other more serious conditions such as skin cancer. To prevent these lesions, always wear sun protection and broad-spectrum sunscreen while outdoors and visit your dermatologist for skin health and wellness checkup.
