Pertussis, commonly known as whooping cough, spreads easily through respiratory droplets from infected individuals. While it can affect people of all ages, babies, young children, and pregnant women are particularly susceptible to severe symptoms.
Vaccination remains the most effective way to prevent pertussis. The pertussis vaccine is included in the DOH Expanded Program on Immunization (EPI) and it is freely provided for young children at local health care units. Additionally, vaccines against pertussis are also available for older children and adults.
Consult your doctor to learn how you can access these vaccines.
As we approach the summer season,๐ it is imperative to take necessary precautions to combat the rising temperatures forecasted by PAGASA in the upcoming days.

Whooping cough cases are continually increasing across the country, with many cities declaring outbreaks in their respective areas. Pertussis, or whooping cough, is a contagious respiratory illness caused by the Bordetella pertussis bacteria. It is most common among babies and children but can also affect adults.
As a precaution, it is advised to wear a face mask and follow proper hygiene to avoid the spread of this illness. Here are other preventive measures to keep your family safe and help the community curb its spread.

The Department of Health Bicol Center for Health Development (DOH Bicol CHD) warns the public of the harmful health effects from El Niรฑo.
According to the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA), a strong and mature El Niรฑo is expected to continue this month and will likely persist until May 2024. With this, there is an increased chance of above-average rainfall followed by extreme heat.
Hence, the DOH Bicol CHD advises the public of the following health measures to prevent the rise of infectious diseases during El Niรฑo:
โข๐๐ผ๐ฟ ๐ฑ๐ฒ๐ป๐ด๐๐ฒ ๐ฎ๐ป๐ฑ ๐ฐ๐ต๐ถ๐ธ๐๐ป๐ด๐๐ป๐๐ฎ (Mosquito-borne diseases) - Practice the 5s: 1. Search and destroy mosquito-breeding sites, 2. Self-protection measures such as wearing long-sleeves and socks, 3. Seek early consultation, 4. Support fogging only in outbreaks, 5. Sustain hydration
โข๐๐ผ๐ฟ ๐ฐ๐ต๐ผ๐น๐ฒ๐ฟ๐ฎ ๐ฎ๐ป๐ฑ ๐๐๐ฝ๐ต๐ผ๐ถ๐ฑ ๐ณ๐ฒ๐๐ฒ๐ฟ (Food and Waterborne diseases) - wash hands before and after cooking and eating, and after using the toilet, ensure safe and clean preparation of food and water, store water in a tightly-sealed container, clean raw and fresh food thoroughly, ensure proper hygiene and cleanliness of surroundings.
โข๐๐ผ๐ฟ ๐ฝ๐ฎ๐ฟ๐ฎ๐น๐๐๐ถ๐ฐ ๐๐ต๐ฒ๐น๐น๐ณ๐ถ๐๐ต ๐ฝ๐ผ๐ถ๐๐ผ๐ป๐ถ๐ป๐ด - avoid eating shellfish, alamang, and small fish sourced from red tide positive coastal waters.
โข๐๐ผ๐ฟ ๐๐ฒ๐ฝ๐๐ผ๐๐ฝ๐ถ๐ฟ๐ผ๐๐ถ๐ - avoid wading in flooded areas, use gloves and boots when traversing through flood water, ensure safe drinking water, practice proper waste disposal, maintain cleanliness of surroundings, clean the part of the body exposed to flood water with clean water and soap.

โขDrink at least 8 glasses (or more) of water a day, find cool or air conditioned places to cool off, never leave kids or pets in a closed parked vehicle, wear comfortable (cotton) material, apply sunscreen with SPF 50 and above, wear sunglasses for eye protection, avoid eating salty and oily foods, and opt to eat fruits and vegetables.
