When we're under attack, our natural instinct is to want to hide or flee, but sometimes, it's necessary to confront the issue. It's essential to prioritize one's safety and well-being by seeking help from a trusted person when facing an attack from an enemy. Seeking help from a trusted person can provide a sense of security, support, and comfort.

18/07/2024

We can't always face life's challenges on our own, and seeking help and guidance from God or church can be a part of our spiritual journey. It takes courage to acknowledge when we need support, and choosing to come to church or seek spiritual guidance can be a sign of strength, not weakness.

18/07/2024

God brings many graces and help to people who trust and lean on Him during the attack of the enemy. When we have faith and we are united, we are not alone in the face of the enemy's attack because we have God.

How to deal with heretics?

Dealing with heretics—those who hold and spread beliefs contrary to established Christian doctrine—requires wisdom, discernment, and a balance of truth and love.
The Bible provides guidance on how to address false teachings and those who propagate them.

1. Titus 3:10-11
"Warn a divisive person once, and then warn them a second time. After that, have nothing to do with them. You may be sure that such people are warped and sinful; they are self-condemned."

Address heretics with clear warnings. If they persist, distance yourself to prevent division and protect the community.

Application
Engage with false teachers, offering correction. If they remain unrepentant, separate to preserve the unity and purity of the church.

2. 2 Timothy 2:24-26
"And the Lord’s servant must not be quarrelsome but must be kind to everyone, able to teach, not resentful. Opponents must be gently instructed, in the hope that God will grant them repentance leading them to a knowledge of the truth, and that they will come to their senses and escape from the trap of the devil, who has taken them captive to do his will."

Correct heretics with gentleness and patience, aiming for their repentance and salvation.

Application
Approach false teachers with kindness, instruct them gently, and pray for their repentance, rather than engaging in heated arguments.

3. 1 John 4:1
"Dear friends, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, because many false prophets have gone out into the world."

Exercise discernment to test the authenticity of teachings and their alignment with biblical truth.

Application
Use Scripture to evaluate teachings and be cautious of new or unfamiliar doctrines.

4. Matthew 7:15-16
Watch out for false prophets. They come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ferocious wolves. By their fruit you will recognize them."

Be vigilant and evaluate teachers by their actions and the outcomes of their teachings.

Application
Observe the behavior and impact of teachers. Authentic faith produces good fruit, while false teachings lead to harmful consequences.

5. Galatians 1:8-9
"But even if we or an angel from heaven should preach a gospel other than the one we preached to you, let them be under God’s curse! As we have already said, so now I say again: If anybody is preaching to you a gospel other than what you accepted, let them be under God’s curse!"

Uphold the true gospel and reject any alternative messages.

Application
Be steadfast in the gospel message. Reject and warn others about any teachings that deviate from the foundational truths of Christianity.

Application:

1. Know the Scriptures.
Be well-versed in the Bible to recognize false teachings. Regular study and understanding of Scripture are crucial.

2. Prayer.
Pray for wisdom and discernment when dealing with heretics. Pray also for their repentance and return to truth.

3. Teach and Correct Gently.
Address heresies with patience and kindness, focusing on correction rather than condemnation.

4. Protect the Community.
If heretics refuse correction and persist in spreading false teachings, take steps to protect the faith community by limiting their influence.

5. Seek Counsel.
Involve church leaders or mature believers when dealing with complex or persistent heretical issues.

6. Maintain Unity.
Strive to preserve the unity of the church, balancing the need for doctrinal purity with love and grace.

By combining biblical guidance with practical steps, believers can effectively address heresy while fostering a community grounded in truth and love.

Exposing Marcionism

Marcionism was an early Christian heresy that emerged in the 2nd century AD, founded by Marcion of Sinope.

Marcion’s Background:
- Early Life and Background.
Marcion was the son of a bishop in Sinope, a port city on the southern coast of the Black Sea. He was a wealthy shipowner who moved to Rome around 140 AD.
- Break with the Church.
Marcion initially joined the Roman Christian community but soon fell into conflict with the leaders over his radical theological views. He was excommunicated around 144 AD.

Marcion’s Core Beliefs
1. Dualistic View of God.
Marcionism proposed a strict distinction between the God of the Old Testament (OT) and the God of the New Testament (NT). Marcion taught that the OT God, whom he called the Demiurge, was a lesser, wrathful, and legalistic deity responsible for creating the material world. In contrast, the NT God, revealed by Jesus Christ, was a higher, benevolent, and merciful deity.

2. Rejection of the Old Testament.
Marcion rejected the entire OT, believing it to be the scripture of the inferior Demiurge. He saw no connection between the teachings of the OT and the revelation of Jesus Christ in the NT.

3. Selective Canon.
Marcion created his own canon of scripture, excluding all the OT and accepting only a modified version of Luke’s Gospel and ten of Paul’s Epistles, which he believed were free from Jewish influence and best represented the teachings of the NT God.

4. Christology.
Marcion believed that Jesus was not born of a woman but appeared suddenly in the form of an adult. He rejected the physical incarnation and suffering of Christ, viewing Jesus’ mission as purely spiritual.

Theological Implications:
1. Ethical Dualism.
The dualistic view of God in Marcionism implied an ethical dualism between the material world, seen as evil and created by the Demiurge, and the spiritual realm, associated with the NT God.

2. Anti-Judaism.
Marcionism was inherently anti-Judaic, rejecting the Jewish roots of Christianity and opposing any continuity between Judaism and Christianity.

Opposition and Impact:
1. Church Response.
Marcionism was widely condemned by early Church leaders and councils. Key figures like Tertullian, Irenaeus, and Hippolytus wrote extensively against Marcion’s teachings, defending the unity of the OT and NT and the continuity of God’s revelation.

2. Formation of the Canon.
The challenge posed by Marcionism contributed to the early Church’s efforts to establish a formal canon of scripture, affirming the validity and inspiration of the OT and the unity of the entire biblical narrative.

Lessons and Applications:
1. Unity of Scripture.
Marcionism underscores the importance of recognizing the unity and coherence of the entire Bible, both the OT and NT, in revealing God's redemptive plan.

2. Continuity of God's Nature.
The rejection of Marcionism affirms the consistent nature of God as revealed through the entire biblical narrative, emphasizing His justice, mercy, and love.

3. Inclusivity of the Gospel.
By opposing Marcionism, the early Church affirmed the inclusivity of the Gospel, which is rooted in the Jewish tradition and extended to all nations through Jesus Christ.

Marcionism, despite its early popularity, was ultimately deemed heretical and rejected by mainstream Christianity, which upheld the OT as integral to the Christian faith and emphasized the continuity and consistency of God's revelation.
