The meaning of the celebration

+ According to ancient tradition, no Masses are celebrated on Good Friday. Instead, the faithful gather to re-tell the story of the Passion of Jesus, to venerate the Cross, and to receive Holy Communion (using hosts consecrated during the Mass of the Lord’s Supper on Holy Thursday).

+ The liturgy of Good Friday begins and ends in silence, signifying that it is part of one great celebration that extends from the end of the Holy Thursday’s Mass of the Lord’s Supper to the beginning of the Easter Vigil on Saturday night.

+ The Church invites us to reflect not only on the suffering and death of Jesus on this day, but to celebrate the Cross as the Tree of Life and the sign of our salvation.

➕ FEAST OF THE BLACK NAZARENE

Viva, Nuestro Padre Jesus Nazareno! Today, in most parts of the Philippines, we celebrate the Feast of the Black Nazarene. This year's feast coincides with the Feast of the Baptism of the Lord.

A first group of Augustinian Recollect missionaries landed in Manila in 1606 from Mexico. They brought with them a dark image of Jesus Christ kneeling on one knee and carrying a large wooden cross. The image was first enshrined in St. John the Baptist Church at Luneta in 1606 and after two years was moved to a bigger church nearby. Over a century and a half later, in 1767, the image was transferred to Quiapo Church whose patron is also St. John the Baptist.

“Traslacion” means the transfer of the Image of Black Nazarene. In a way it is imitating the Calvary experience: the sacrifice and suffering that our Lord endured for our salvation like when Jesus was walking barefoot, carrying the cross to Mount Calvary. This feast also commemorates the transfer of the image from Luneta to Quiapo, when the statue was first received in 1868.

Pope Innocent X specially recognized the Philippines’ strong devotion to the Black Nazarene of Manila in 1650.

O God, who willed that your Only Begotten Son should undergo the Cross to save the human race, grant, we pray, that we, who have known his mystery on earth, may merit the grace of his redemption in heaven. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God, forever and ever. Amen.
