Ngayong Earth Day at sa mga susunond pang mga araw, ating hamunin ang sarili na maging aktibo sa pakikilahok sa mga diskusyon at proyekto sa ating sariling mga komunidad, paaralan, at bayan. Hindi naman masamang tumulong sa malalayong komunidad, ngunit mahalaga ring malaman ang mga isyung pangkapaligiran na ating nadadaan-daanan lang sa araw-araw. Imbes na hanggang pagsambit na lang ng "sana all" sa ibang mga lugar, tayo ay gumawa ng aksyon upang maisaayos rin ang ating komunidad.

Walang masama sa pagpost ng mga gawaing pangkalikasan sa social media, ngunit hindi dapat doon nagtatapos ang ating pagtingin sa mga aktibidad. Sa paggawa ng mga aktibidad upang makatulong sa kalikasan, huwag unahin ang pansariling interes na sumikat, makitang makakalikasan, at makahakot ng likes and shares, bagkus ay magfocus lamang sa kung ano ang dapat na maisagawa ng tama. Hindi sa lahat ng bagay ay papalakpakan at susuportahan tayo ng mga kakilala sa ating pagsunod sa prinsipyo, ngunit hindi iyon dapat maging malaking balakid sa ating paggawa ng tama.

It's time to update our textbooks! Researchers confirmed the discovery of nitroplast, an organelle inside a species of marine algae that fixes nitrogen into a useful form.

In our basic biology classes, we were taught that the nitrogen in the atmosphere can only be processed by bacteria and archaea into a usable form for life. This is best illustrated by the symbiotic bacteria in the root nodules of legumes that "fix" nitrogen and turn it into a form usable for the plant. That's true - until now.

After years of research, an international team of scientists confirmed the existence of an organelle inside a eukaryotic cell that can turn nitrogen into a usable form. The organelle, known as nitroplast, evolved from a once-independent nitrogen-fixing bacteria now living permanently inside an algae - eventually becoming a part of it. The discovery of the existence of nitroplast in the marine algae species 𝘉𝘳𝘢𝘢𝘳𝘶𝘥𝘰𝘴𝘱𝘩𝘢𝘦𝘳𝘢 𝘣𝘪𝘨𝘦𝘭𝘰𝘸𝘪𝘪 finally adds eukaryotes to living forms that can fix nitrogen.

The nitroplast organelle is the fourth known example of primary endosymbiosis, a process in which a eukaryotic cell eventually engulfs its symbiotic prokaryotic cell and eventually turns it into an organelle. Throughout Earth's history, such breakthroughs in evolution led to more complex ways of life, such as when previously independent microorganisms became permanent residents of their hosts and became what we know now as mitochondria and chloroplasts.

READ: Ayon sa Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology, posibleng makapag-produce ng magnitude 8 na lindol ang Manila Trench sa West Philippine Sea at Philippine Trench sa silangan ng Visayas. Hindi baguhan ang Pilipinas sa malakas na lindol, dahil ito ay naka-locate sa Pacific Ring of Fire.

Tinutulak ng Philippine Sea Plate pa-hilagang kanluran ang Pilipinas against sa Eurasian Plate na immobile o halos hindi gumagalaw. Napapaligiran ang ating bansa ng Eurasian Plate at Philippine Sea Plate, ayon kay PHIVOLCS Director Teresito Bacolcol, sa kanyang panayam kay Raffy Tima ng GMA News.

Ayon sa kanya, kayang mag-generate ng MAGNITUDE 8.1 ang Philippine Trench sa silangan ng bansa, na makakapag-produce ng tsunami na 10 metro ang taas. Kaya ring gumawa ng MAGNITUDE 8.3 na lindol ang Manila Trench sa West Philippine Sea.

Dagdag pa niya ay MABILIS ang tsunami, na posibleng umabot lamang ng 5 minuto bago tumama sa baybayin matapos ang isang lindol, at mahihirapang makakatakbo ang maraming tao.

Importante ang pag-alam sa "SHAKE, DROP and ROAR" ng mga tao na nakatira sa baybayin ng dagat. Pagkatapos ng lindol ay biglang bumaba ang tubig dagat at marinig ang isang ungol mula sa karagatan, dapat ay lumikas na ang mga tao, ayon sa kanya.

Kailanman, ay hindi naaalam kung kelan tumatama ang isang lindol, kaya't dapat lagi maging handa.

NASA PLANS TO RETIRE INTERNATIONAL SPACE STATION IN 2031.

The International Space Station (ISS) will
continue its operation until 2030 and then crash into an uninhabited area in the Pacific Ocean known as Point Nemo, NASA announced Monday.

It will be replaced with three free-flying space
stations to continue the work after ISS's retirement, NASA said.

The agency has entered into commercial
agreements with three companies to develop the stations: Blue Origin of Kent, Washington, Nanoracks LLC, of Houston, Texas, and Northrop Grumman Systems Corporation of Dulles, Virginia.

BACTERIA FROM MAYON SHOW POTENTIAL ANTIBIOTIC, ANTICANCER PROPERTIES

The Department of Science of Technology (DOST) announced Tuesday that researchers from the University of the Philippines Los Baños (UPLB) have identified a bacterial species from the soils of Mt. Mayon with potential antibiotic and anti-colorectal cancer activities.

Identified as Streptomyces sp. A1-08, the specific "bacterial isolate" has shown antibiotic activity against numerous potentially pathogenic microorganisms. According to DOST, it is one of the 30 bacteria that were isolated from soil samples of Mt. Mayon in Malilipot, Albay.

“We have high hopes of getting new and novel species because this is a less explored environment, a volcano”, said Kristel Mae P. Oliveros, the project leader and an assistant professor in UPLB Microbiology Division. “We were totally surprised and excited,” she added while describing how they felt upon finding out the results of their experiments.

Once the researchers have confirmed that Streptomyces sp. A1-08 is a new species, they will name it “Streptomyces mayonensis A1-08” in honor of the Philippines.

“Future rigorous research in drug chemistry... are vital to claim that the secondary metabolites produced by our isolate is totally new and hopefully effective as a chemotherapy drug,” said Oliveros.

“This is also our dream, to put this project forward in the large-scale cosmeceutical and pharmaceutical pipeline!” the UPLB researcher added. | via DOST page
