Prayer to Blessed Carlo Acutis:
"O God, our Father, thank you for giving us Carlo, a model of life for young people, and a message of love for all. St. Margaret Mary Alacoque. (1647-1690)
Feast Day : October 16
French nun and mystic, who promoted devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus in its modern form.
Alacoque was born in 1647 in L'Hautecour, France and and from the age of seven, when she received her first Holy Communion, she had always manifested an intense love of the Most Blessed Sacrament. Our Lord appeared to her often, usually as the Crucified Christ. Her simplicity caused her to feel that these apparitions were also granted to others who had recourse to Jesus in the sacrament of His love.
Alacoque lost her father at a young age, and the family's assets were held by a relative who refused to hand them over, plunging her family into poverty. During this time, her only consolation were frequent visits to pray before the Blessed Sacrament in the local church.
When she was 17, however, the family regained their fortune and her mother encouraged her to go in society, in the hopes of her finding a suitable husband. Out of obedience, and believing that her childhood vow was no longer binding, she began to accompany her brothers in the social events of her society, attending dances and balls.
One night, after returning home from a ball for Carnival dressed in her finery, she experienced a vision of Christ, scourged and bloody. He reproached her for her forgetfulness of him; yet he also reassured her by demonstrating that his Heart was filled with love for her, because of the childhood promise she had made to his Blessed Mother.
When 24 years of age, Margaret entered the cloister, choosing the most menial tasks. Gifted with intelligence and common sense, she made great progress in holiness. Our Lord entrusted to her the mission of establishing the reign of the Sacred Heart among the children of men. Criticism did not hamper her zeal, and her charity toward her opponents won them over to the cause of the Master.
In this monastery Alacoque received several private revelations of the Sacred Heart, the first on 27 December 1673, and the final one 18 months later. The visions revealed to her the form of the devotion, the chief features being reception of Holy Communion on the first Friday of each month, Eucharistic adoration during a "Holy hour" on Thursdays, and the celebration of the Feast of the Sacred Heart.
She stated that in her vision she was instructed to spend an hour every Thursday night to meditate on Jesus' Agony in the Garden of Gethsemane. The Holy Hour practice later became widespread among Catholics.
Initially discouraged in her efforts to follow the instruction she had received in her visions, Alacoque was eventually able to convince her superior, Mother de Saumaise, of the authenticity of her visions. She was unable, however, to convince a group of theologians of the validity of her apparitions, nor was she any more successful with many of the members of her own community, and suffered greatly at their hands.
She eventually received the support of St. Claude de la Colombière, S.J., the community's confessor for a time, who declared that the visions were genuine. In 1683, opposition in the community ended when Mother Melin was elected Superior and named Margaret Mary her assistant.
She later became Novice Mistress, and saw the monastery observe the Feast of the Sacred Heart privately, beginning in 1686. Two years later, a chapel was built at the Paray-le-Monial to honor the Sacred Heart.
After nineteen years in the convent, St. Margaret Mary died October 17, 1690 and was canonized by Pope Benedict XV in 1920.
St Margaret Mary Alacoque, pray for us.🙏

"Happy Columbus Day"
When the Knights of Columbus was founded, many Americans looked with suspicion upon Catholicism but held the Catholic explorer Christopher Columbus in high regard. Blessed Michael McGivney and the first Knights chose Columbus as a namesake because he served as an important symbol of courage, unity and hope among American Catholics, particularly Catholic immigrants. Happy Columbus Day to all Knights on this federal holiday!

The Feast of Our Lady of the Rosary🌹
October 7
They have dared the white republics up the capes of Italy,
They have dashed the Adriatic round the Lion of the Sea,
And the Pope has cast his arms abroad for agony and loss,
And called the kings of Christendom for sword about the Cross.
453rd ANNIVERSARY
THE BATTLE OF LEPANTO
(October 7, 1571-2024)
The Memorial of Our Lady of the Rosary commemorates our Mother’s faithful intercession at the Battle of Lepanto in 1571. A fleet of allied Christian ships, united through Philip II of Spain and Pope Pius V, were victorious against the Ottoman Turks who were trying to solidify their hold on Cyprus. The victory spurred European morale and was attributed to Our Lady, as the Christian forces united in prayer to her before the battle. The Battle of Lepanto is one of many victories throughout history accredited to Our Lady’s power and goodness
The development of the rosary has a long history. First, a practice developed of praying 150 Our Fathers in imitation of the 150 Psalms. Then there was a parallel practice of praying the Hail Mary 150 times. Soon a mystery of Jesus' life was attached to each Hail Mary. Though Mary's giving the rosary to Saint Dominic is recognized as a legend, the development of this prayer form owes much to the followers of Saint Dominic. One of them, Alan de la Roche, was known as “the apostle of the rosary.” He founded the first Confraternity of the Rosary in the 15th century. In the 16th century the rosary was developed to its present form—with the 15 mysteries (joyful, sorrowful and glorious). In 2002, Saint John Paul II added the Mysteries of Light (the Luminous Mysteries) to this devotion.
OFFICE OF READINGS (MATINS).
First reading
From the first letter of the apostle Paul to Timothy
2:1-15
A call to prayer
First of all, I urge that petitions, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgiving be offered for all men, especially for kings and those in authority, that we may be able to lead undisturbed and tranquil lives in perfect piety and dignity.
Prayer of this kind is good, and God our savior is pleased with it, for he wants all men to be saved and come to know the truth. And the truth is this:
“God is one.
One also is the mediator between God and men,
the man Christ Jesus,
who gave himself as a ransom for all.”
This truth was attested at the fitting time. I have been made its herald and apostle (believe me, I am not lying but speak the truth), the teacher of the nations in the true faith.
It is my wish, then, that in every place the men shall offer prayers with blameless hands held aloft, and be free from anger and dissension.
Similarly, the women must deport themselves properly. They should dress modestly and quietly, and not be decked out in fancy hair styles, gold ornaments, pearls, or costly clothing; rather, as becomes women who profess to be religious, their adornment should be good deeds. A woman must learn in silence and be completely submissive. I do not permit a woman to act as teacher, or in any way to have authority over a man; she must be quiet.
For Adam was created first, Eve afterward; moreover, it was not Adam who was deceived but the woman. It was she who was led astray and fell into sin. She will be saved through childbearing, provided she continues in faith and love and holiness—her chastity being taken for granted.
RESPONSORY 1 Timothy 2:5-6; Hebrews 2;17
There is only one God and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus.
— He gave himself as a ransom for all.
He had to become like his brothers in every way, so that he might show them compassion.
— He gave himself as a ransom for all.
Second reading
From a sermon by Saint Bernard, abbot
We should meditate on the mysteries of salvation
The child to be born of you will be called holy, the Son of God, the fountain of wisdom, the Word of the Father on high. Through you, blessed Virgin, this Word will become flesh, so that even though, as he says: I am in the Father and the Father is in me, it is still true for him to say: “I came forth from God and am here.”
In the beginning was the Word. The spring was gushing forth, yet still within himself. Indeed, the Word was with God, truly dwelling in inaccessible light. And the Lord said from the beginning: I think thoughts of peace and not of affliction. Yet your thought was locked within you, and whatever you thought, we did not know; for who knew the mind of the Lord, or who was his counselor?
And so the idea of peace came down to do the work of peace: The Word was made flesh and even now dwells among us. It is by faith that he dwells in our hearts, in our memory, our intellect and penetrates even into our imagination. What concept could man have of God if he did not first fashion an image of him in his heart? By nature incomprehensible and inaccessible, he was invisible and unthinkable, but now he wished to be understood, to be seen and thought of.
But how, you ask, was this done? He lay in a manger and rested on a virgin’s breast, preached on a mountain, and spent the night in prayer. He hung on a cross, grew pale in death, and roamed free among the dead and ruled over those in hell. He rose again on the third day, and showed the apostles the wounds of the nails, the signs of victory; and finally in their presence he ascended to the sanctuary of heaven.
How can we not contemplate this story in truth, piety and holiness? Whatever of all this I consider, it is God I am considering; in all this he is my God. I have said it is wise to meditate on these truths, and I have thought it right to recall the abundant sweetness, given by the fruits of this priestly root; and Mary, drawing abundantly from heaven, has caused this sweetness to overflow for us.
RESPONSORY
O Virgin Mary, no other daughter of Jerusalem is your equal, for you are the mother of the King of kings, you are the Queen of heaven and of angels.
Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb.
Hail, full of grace; the Lord is with you.
Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb.
CONCLUDING PRAYER
Pour forth,
we beseech you, O Lord,
your grace into our hearts,
that we, to whom the Incarnation of Christ your Son
was made known by the message of an Angel,
may, through the intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary,
by his Passion and Cross be brought to the glory of his Resurrection.
Who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
God, for ever and ever.
-Amen.🙏

The month of October each year is dedicated to the Rosary. The Feast of Our Lady of the Rosary was introduced by Pope St. Pius V (1504-1572) in the year 1571 to commemorate the miraculous victory of the Christian forces in the Battle of Lepanto on October 7, 1571. The Pope attributed more to the “arms” of the Rosary than to the power of cannons and the valor of the soldiers who fought there.
It all started in 1571 when the Catholic League entered into battle against the Ottoman Empire to protect Italy from invasion. The Turks were on a warpath to overthrow all of Europe, killing millions of people and forcing Islamic conversion on survivors. They had conquered the Middle East and Mediterranean islands of Cyrus and Crete; Italy was next.
As the impending battle loomed, Pope Pius V called on various religious communities throughout Europe to join him in praying the Rosary, including public recitations, to defeat the Islamic threat. Heading into battle, every man in the Catholic League’s forces carried a Rosary. Their fleet was no match for the competition; they were vastly outnumbered.
Miraculously, the Catholic League returned victorious after a daylong battle known as the Battle of Lepanto that took place off the coast of Greece. In thanksgiving for Mary’s intercession and protection, Pope Pius V declared the day — October 7 — as a feast day for Our Lady of the Rosary. To celebrate, a Rosary procession was held in Saint Peter’s Square.
After the feast day was established, the entire month of October was dedicated to the Rosary in 1884 by Pope Leo XIII in his encyclical Superiore Anno:
“𝗟𝗮𝘀𝘁 𝘆𝗲𝗮𝗿, 𝗮𝘀 𝗲𝗮𝗰𝗵 𝗼𝗳 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗶𝘀 𝗮𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗲, 𝘄𝗲 𝗱𝗲𝗰𝗿𝗲𝗲𝗱 𝗯𝘆 𝗮𝗻 𝗘𝗻𝗰𝘆𝗰𝗹𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗟𝗲𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁, 𝘁𝗼 𝘄𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗵𝗲𝗹𝗽 𝗼𝗳 𝗛𝗲𝗮𝘃𝗲𝗻 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗖𝗵𝘂𝗿𝗰𝗵 𝗶𝗻 𝗵𝗲𝗿 𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗮𝗹𝘀, 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗴𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁 𝗠𝗼𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿 𝗼𝗳 𝗚𝗼𝗱 𝘀𝗵𝗼𝘂𝗹𝗱 𝗯𝗲 𝗵𝗼𝗻𝗼𝗿𝗲𝗱 𝗯𝘆 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗺𝗲𝗮𝗻𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗺𝗼𝘀𝘁 𝗵𝗼𝗹𝘆 𝗥𝗼𝘀𝗮𝗿𝘆 𝗱𝘂𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘄𝗵𝗼𝗹𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗺𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗵 𝗼𝗳 𝗢𝗰𝘁𝗼𝗯𝗲𝗿. 𝗜𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝘄𝗲 𝗳𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗼𝘄𝗲𝗱 𝗯𝗼𝘁𝗵 𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗼𝘄𝗻 𝗶𝗺𝗽𝘂𝗹𝘀𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗲𝘅𝗮𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗽𝗿𝗲𝗱𝗲𝗰𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗼𝗿𝘀, 𝘄𝗵𝗼 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗲𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗱𝗶𝗳𝗳𝗶𝗰𝘂𝗹𝘁𝘆 𝘄𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝘄𝗼𝗻𝘁 𝘁𝗼 𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝗿𝗲𝗰𝗼𝘂𝗿𝘀𝗲 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗶𝗻𝗰𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘀𝗲𝗱 𝗳𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗼𝗿 𝘁𝗼 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗕𝗹𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗲𝗱 𝗩𝗶𝗿𝗴𝗶𝗻, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗼 𝘀𝗲𝗲𝗸 𝗵𝗲𝗿 𝗮𝗶𝗱 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝘀𝗽𝗲𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗽𝗿𝗮𝘆𝗲𝗿𝘀.”
Although the commitment to the Rosary was formalized in 1571, it was an established prayer long before then. The Rosary was first given to Saint Dominic by the Virgin Mary during an apparition in 1214 in Prouilhe of southern France. She presented it as a source of strength to aid him in the conflicts with Albigensian heretics. The image of Our Lady of the Rosary reflects this apparition, with Mary holding the child Jesus in one hand and the other hand extending to give the Rosary beads to Saint Dominic. Pope Benedict explained the meaning behind the image in a 2007 Angelus homily:
“𝗧𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗮𝗻𝘁 𝗶𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗼𝗴𝗿𝗮𝗽𝗵𝘆 𝘀𝗵𝗼𝘄𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗥𝗼𝘀𝗮𝗿𝘆 𝗶𝘀 𝗮 𝗺𝗲𝗮𝗻𝘀 𝗴𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗻 𝗯𝘆 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗩𝗶𝗿𝗴𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗼 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗝𝗲𝘀𝘂𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱, 𝗶𝗻 𝗺𝗲𝗱𝗶𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗼𝗻 𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗹𝗶𝗳𝗲, 𝘁𝗼 𝗹𝗼𝘃𝗲 𝗵𝗶𝗺 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗳𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗼𝘄 𝗵𝗶𝗺 𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝗳𝗮𝗶𝘁𝗵𝗳𝘂𝗹𝗹𝘆. 𝗜𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗺𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗮𝗴𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗢𝘂𝗿 𝗟𝗮𝗱𝘆 𝗵𝗮𝘀 𝗮𝗹𝘀𝗼 𝗯𝗲𝗾𝘂𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗼 𝘂𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝗵𝗲𝗿 𝘃𝗮𝗿𝗶𝗼𝘂𝘀 𝗮𝗽𝗽𝗮𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀.”
Saint Dominic went on to establish the Order of Preachers, known as the Dominicans. This spurred the Dominican Order to make the Apostolate of the Rosary their special concern. The Dominican Pope, St. Pius V, did much to further the spread of the Rosary and it thereafter became one of the most popular devotions in Christendom. It was the same Pope St. Pius V, who in 1569 officially approved the Rosary in its present form with the Papal Bull, Consueverunt Romani Pontifices. It had been completed by the addition of the second half of the “Hail Mary” and the “Glory be to the Father” at the conclusion of each mystery.
It was in the Middle Ages that the Rosary came to be used in various monasteries as a substitute for praying the Divine Office for the lay monks and devout lay persons who did not know how to read. Instead of the 150 Psalms, they would pray 150 “Our Fathers” counting them on a ring of beads known as the crown or “corona.” With the growth of popularity of Marian devotion in the twelfth century, the “Psalter of the Blessed Virgin Mary” developed now substituting 150 “Hail Mary’s” in place of the “Our Father’s.”
The 150 “Hail Mary’s” were subsequently subdivided into fifteen decades by the young Dominican friar, Henry Kalkar (1328-1408), with each decade referring to an event in the life of Jesus and Mary. The Dominican, Alanus de Rupe (1428-1478), further divided the episodes in the history of salvation into the Joyful, Sorrowful and Glorious mysteries.
Saint John Paul II expanded on the Rosary’s power in his 2002 apostolic letter Rosarium Virginis Mariae, when he announced the Year of the Rosary and the addition of the Luminous Mysteries:
“𝗪𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗥𝗼𝘀𝗮𝗿𝘆, 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗖𝗵𝗿𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗮𝗻 𝗽𝗲𝗼𝗽𝗹𝗲 𝘀𝗶𝘁𝘀 𝗮𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘀𝗰𝗵𝗼𝗼𝗹 𝗼𝗳 𝗠𝗮𝗿𝘆 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗹𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗼 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗯𝗲𝗮𝘂𝘁𝘆 𝗼𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗳𝗮𝗰𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗖𝗵𝗿𝗶𝘀𝘁 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗼 𝗲𝘅𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗱𝗲𝗽𝘁𝗵𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗹𝗼𝘃𝗲. 𝗧𝗵𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗥𝗼𝘀𝗮𝗿𝘆 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗳𝗮𝗶𝘁𝗵𝗳𝘂𝗹 𝗿𝗲𝗰𝗲𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗮𝗯𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗮𝗻𝘁 𝗴𝗿𝗮𝗰𝗲, 𝗮𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘆 𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗱𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗠𝗼𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗥𝗲𝗱𝗲𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗿.”
The Rosary is primarily a scriptural prayer. This was summarized by Pope Pius XII (papacy: 1939- 1958) who said that the Rosary is ” a compendium of the entire Gospel” (AAS 38 [1946] p. 419). The Rosary draws its mysteries from the New Testament and is centered on the great events of the Incarnation and Redemption.
In this month of October, let us consider the beautiful prayer of the Rosary as a means that we too can use to draw closer to God by meditating on the great mysteries of our salvation.
Vivat Jesus 🙏

Jesus said to them,
"Woe to you, Chorazin! Woe to you, Bethsaida!
For if the mighty deeds done in your midst
had been done in Tyre and Sidon,
they would long ago have repented,
sitting in sackcloth and ashes.
But it will be more tolerable for Tyre and Sidon
at the judgment than for you.
And as for you, Capernaum, 'Will you be exalted to heaven?
You will go down to the netherworld.'
Whoever listens to you listens to me.
Whoever rejects you rejects me.
And whoever rejects me rejects the one who sent me."

Celebrated on October 4th, Saint Francis of Assisi is venerated for his profound love for all of creation, his life of poverty, and his dedication to peace and humility.
🙏 Born in 1181 in Assisi, Italy, Francis was the son of a wealthy merchant. However, after a spiritual awakening, he renounced his wealth and worldly status to embrace a life of simplicity and total devotion to Christ. Inspired by the teachings of Jesus, Francis lived a life of poverty, humility, and complete trust in God’s providence, seeking to follow the Gospel as literally as possible. 🙏
Saint Francis is perhaps best known for his deep love of nature and animals. He saw all of creation as a reflection of God’s beauty and goodness. Francis preached to birds, blessed animals, and is said to have tamed a fierce wolf that had terrorized a village. His reverence for the natural world has made him the patron saint of animals and the environment. His Canticle of the Sun, a prayer of praise for the elements, reflects his joyful spirit and deep sense of kinship with all of God's creatures.
Another remarkable story is Francis' encounter with the Sultan of Egypt during the Crusades. Rather than seek violence or conquest, Francis bravely crossed enemy lines to promote peace. He engaged in dialogue with the Sultan, emphasizing love and understanding over conflict. Though they came from different faiths, their respectful meeting became a symbol of peaceful coexistence and mutual respect, a testament to Francis’ role as a herald of peace.
On his feast day, we honor Saint Francis of Assisi for his simplicity, his love for creation, and his message of peace. His life invites us to embrace humility, to care for the earth and all living things, and to seek peace in our relationships with others. May we follow his example of living in harmony with God's creation and spreading love and compassion to all.
Saint Francis please pray for us. 🙏
