Financier is a transliteration of the French term for this classic room-temperature cake. Originating in 19th-century Paris, a pastry chef named Lasnes noticed that the financiers working nearby had little time for lunch due to their hectic schedules. To cater to their needs, he created a convenient, portable snack that wouldn’t dirty their clothes.

Traditionally, the cake is baked in rectangular molds, resembling small gold bars (as seen in the photo). Given its shape and the fact that it was designed for the financial sector, it was named "financier," a French word that connotes "financier, wealthy person, or wealth." Hence, it is also known as the financier cake or gold bar cake.
