The Christmas story continues with the story on “the killing of the innocents”. King Herod ordered the killing of all boys under the age of two born in the Bethlehem area after the Magi had informed him that a baby boy destined to become king of the Jews had been born in the city. King Herod died in 4 B.C.E. (Before Common Era). He was succeeded by Herod Antipas. It is therefore assumed that Jesus was born around 6 and 4 B.C.E.

Why is the date 4 B.C.E. important? Because it was the year Sepphoris was destroyed, possibly the year of Jesus’s birth. Sepphoris is believed to be the birthplace of Mary. (According to old tradition, however, she was born in Jerusalem.) Sepphoris was “an urbane center” just four kilometers from Nazareth, a walkable distance. It was very likely that Jesus and Joseph often went there to do some artisan work when Jesus was a very young man.

As a young boy, Jesus must have grown up hearing about the fierce battle in Sepphoris, how it was destroyed by the Romans during the rebellion of Judas of Galilee and again 10 years later in 6 C.E. (Common Era) when Jesus was around 10 years old.

Growing up with constant public discussion on the destruction of Sepphoris with the r**e and killing of the Jewish women and their husbands and children would have been in the young Jesus’s mind all the time. Thus, as a Teacher going around Galillee, where Sepphoris was located, Jesus spoke often about peace, forgiveness, and love (Love the other as thyself).

More than 2,000 years later, the brutal episode in Sepphoris is with us again—in Gaza and Israel. Like the people of Sepphoris during the birth of Jesus, these peoples are fighting and crying for their right to live in freedom, in dignity, and in peace without any threat to their lives and way of life.

As we go through the Christmas ritual of merry-making in the midst of the painful events around us, and as we think of Jesus’s birth and death for us, let us reflect on the shortest and saddest verse in the Bible. “And Jesus wept”: John 11:35.

Miriam College started the 1000 day-countdown to its centennial a few days ago marking the arrival of the Maryknoll Sisters in the country and their founding of many Maryknoll schools, including Maryknoll College (first as a Normal School). But Miriam College “opened” only in 1989 after the Maryknoll Sisters donated the land and buildings at Loyola Heights to the then Maryknoll College Foundation, a historic action done by a congregation of missioners, who themselves depend on donations for their missions.

This unprecedented act of giving while in need of donations for their own missions abroad was like the parable of the widow’s mite, giving away what one needs but believing that God will provide. This enabled young Filipino girls and women from various socio-economic sectors to continue their education along the Maryknoll ideals.

There are still those who wish that the change in name never happened. But those who were there when the decision was made would witness through the years the amazing development in and of Miriam College.

MC Alviera campus design by Lor Calma & Partners wins London architecture award - The Voice Newsweekly Lor Calma & Partners recently won the 2022 Outstanding Property Award London (OPAL) for its architectural design of the Miriam College Alviera (MC Alviera) campus, a first for the top Filipino architectural firm.

We are happy to share with you-- if you have not seen yet the press releases on our third campus in Alviera, Porac, Pampanga, last March—two birds’ eye-view photos showing the now-being-constructed structures in our newest campus.

Best described as the man-made architectural design blending with God’s design on nature, our campus reflects the Maryknoll vision on ecological integrity. The architectural design of Lor Calma and Associates won a prize from an award giving body in Europe.

As climate change becomes the focus of all activities now in global and corporate affairs, and as poverty is also seen now from the lens of being victims of climate change the cries for social and economic justice (another advocacy of MC) fused with climate justice get louder.

MC Alviera will thus focus on creation and innovation leading to sustainability and human development through its academic programs on Early Childhood Education, Entrepreneurship and Innovation, Design in Creative Industries, Global Affairs and Humanitarian Diplomacy, Environmental Planning, and a masteral program on Education in Curriculum and Teaching with Specialization in 21st Century Learning.

MC Alviera will open its doors in September 2023 in the Higher Education or HEU (tertiary) unit. After a year, in 2024-2025, the Basic Education Units or BEU (elementary and junior high school) will start their operations.

Called the “campus of the creative generation”, MC will operate under the 𝗨𝗻𝗶𝗳𝗶𝗲𝗱 𝗠𝘂𝗹𝘁𝗶-𝗰𝗮𝗺𝗽𝘂𝘀 𝗦𝘆𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗺 of Miriam College. 𝗘𝗮𝗰𝗵 𝗰𝗮𝗺𝗽𝘂𝘀—the parent campus in Loyola Heights (BEU to HEU), the Nuvali BEU campus, and the Alviera BEU-to-HEU campus,-- 𝘄𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝗰𝗮𝗿𝗿𝘆 𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗠𝗮𝗿𝘆𝗸𝗻𝗼𝗹𝗹/𝗠𝗶𝗿𝗶𝗮𝗺 𝗖𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗴𝗲 𝘃𝗶𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗼𝗳 “𝗺𝗮𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗜𝗻𝘃𝗶𝘀𝗶𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝘃𝗶𝘀𝗶𝗯𝗹𝗲” 𝘁𝗵𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗰𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝘃𝗮𝗹𝘂𝗲𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗧𝗿𝘂𝘁𝗵, 𝗝𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗲, 𝗣𝗲𝗮𝗰𝗲, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗽𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗜𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗴𝗿𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗼𝗳 𝗖𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻.

Thank you.
